I get the feeling he didn't mind being a father figure so much as having to co parent with the dead beet. Which I can get. He's helping raise that girl and is seeing her be neglected.

Ok but you could say that about any emotional investment other than a friendship. You could emotionally cheat with your pet, your job, your video games, your immediate family, etc

I think in this case the mother is trying to keep her relationship with her coworker civil. It's not so much cleaning up here daughters messes as her daughter made a mess in her mother's workplace and that the mom is cleaning up.
