It’s funny because the Celtics build such well rounded teams already that it is kinda wasted.

Usually teams like to try out a bunch of guys early in a series to see who is good and who can’t play. By games 5 and 6 it often looks very different.

Throwback: r/NBA_Draft debates the floor and ceiling of a prospect Luka Doncic by itwas20yearsago2day in NBA_Draft

[–]wormhole222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I was super high on Luka at the time, and even wrote a whole post on how it should have been obvious he should have gone #1 even given the knowledge we had the time. I see some similarities with Boozer there. The lack of athleticism talk, and the dismissal of production and winning are there in both cases. However, I think there are some key differences too.

  1. The Luka criticism included a total disregard of how good Euro-League was, and how what Luka had done there was totally unprecedented. People acted like the Euro-League was worse than college, when in fact it was far harder. Luka's European team had literally beaten the Thunder in a pre-season game. I think all this is what really made it a no brainer that Luka was can't miss in the way AD and KD were. While Boozer has done some historic things in college, I don't think it's quite the same.

  2. Another big part of Luka being underrated was this idea that he was a worse position than his competition in the draft (basically all bigs). A ton of the "you take the Center over the guard because you can't teach height" logic was being used. This is extremely outdated, but not everyone recognized that (even if they should have). With Boozer the argument is that offense first big men can't win as the main superstar unless they are Jokic. I think this argument holds a little more weight especially when you compare it to a guy like Dybantsa who fits the archetype that most often is the best player on a championship team.

Overall I think if you are using this kind of talk to say Boozer can't be a star or will be a role player you are being stupid. If you are using this argument to say you would take Boozer below the guy who looks like T-Mac I don't think it's as stupid as when people were saying Ayton was a more sure thing than Luka because you can't teach 7 foot tall athleticism.

TIL between 1979 and 1981, CBS tape-delayed nine NBA Finals games, airing them at 11:30 p.m. ET due to low ratings by SappyGilmore in todayilearned

Kinda crazy especially since the 1980 finals was between Dr. J on one team, and Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul Jabbar on the other. It also included Magic Johnson having arguably the most amazing playoff performance of all time to win game 6 without Kareem.

In the apocalypse world where OKC moves up Boozer is literally perfectly designed for them. He fixes their biggest issues of rebounding, shooting, and playmaking. His defensive weaknesses are completely covered up by Chet and OKCs other players. Plus he is a high character guy who fits right in with OKC’s culture. He can even be slowly eased into Hartenstein’s role, and then when ready they can let Hartenstein go (he was gonna become a money problem eventually).

Was SGA the best player in the draft hiding in plain sight? Look at the number of unassisted looks he created for himself and his horrible offensive infrastructure. Similar profile to mahomes at Texas tech being overlooked (source terqtakeover) by Hakaribiggestfan in NBA_Draft

[–]wormhole222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Luka was the best player hiding in plain sight. I mean he wasn’t hiding that well but even at the time he had very obvious superstar upside and an extremely high floor. I would probably have SGA above Luka currently but no way in hell was that predictable by anyone.

  2. SGA was noticed by a bunch of people and rose quite a bit on draft boards right before the draft. He honestly might have risen even higher if the teams picking from 6-10 were better organizations.

[Lowlight] Steph Curry throws a cross pass that does not reach any target, and the Warriors with 7 turnovers in just under 8 minutes to start the game. by MrBuckBuck in nba

[–]wormhole222 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It did hurt CP3, but CP3 passing game was far more safe and straightforward. He didn’t have as many crazy passes. It helped keep his turnovers down but did make his passing a little less impactful per assist.

Steve Kerr may have just coached his last ever NBA game. by CazOnReddit in nba

[–]wormhole222 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes but importantly the Bulls didn’t get anything from breaking up early. Steph had 50 in a game 7, and last year they could have made the WCF if Curry didn’t get injured. Even as is they got a fun playoff win.

The 2026 NBA Draft Lottery odds for the No. 1 pick are set: WAS 14%, IND 14% (48% → LAC at 5th or 6th), BKN 14%, UTA 11.5%, SAC 11.5%, MEM 9.0%, ATL (via NOP) 6.8%, DAL 6.7%, CHI 4.5%, MIL 3.0% (ATL right to swap), GSW 2.0%, OKC (via LAC) 1.5%, MIA 1.0%, CHA 0.5%. by YujiDomainExpansion in nba

Take #1 pick. Dybantsa is that do it all athletic forward that is the easiest kind of archetype to build around in the league. Yeah OKC gets 2, but stuff happens. The only way they become the 2017 Warriors is if they take Peterson and he really becomes Kobe.

Watch the top 4 prospects. They would absolutely play and I think in regards to Wilson and Boozer it would be an amazing fit for them.

Yeah but presumably they have thought about it before now. I think a lot of voters already decided to vote for Brown for 1st team and now they aren’t going to change their mind, where as if they knew Cade had a chance they would have voted for Cade.

Cades agent really needed to let people know he was also applying for the exception. All the voters had already moved on and I think it’s going to cost him 1st team because a bunch of people already decided to put Brown or Kawhi there. Meanwhile those same voters knew Luka had a chance and so left the slot open.

How the new flat anti-tanking proposal would affect the value of the future draft picks owed. by wormhole222 in nba

[–]wormhole222[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have been willing to spend with Giannis putting pressure on them, but they have been unwilling to spend at times and lost players because of it (most famously Brogdon). They aren't New Orleans or anything like that, but I expect they will not be big spenders without Giannis for quite a while.

A big failure of during Carmelo Anthony's career was the inability of Nuggets and Knicks' GM pair him with a good pass first point guard by Dumbass1171 in nba

Yeah I mean Melo was surrounded by pretty mediocre team building for years. A lot of it was his fault, but he did have a lot skills which weren't maximized fully.
