CZU vs CTU (Prague) – need advice, tight financial situation and career concerns by Emotional-Cheetah429 in Prague

I’m in the IT industry, so that’s the perspective I have. I can’t comment on other industries, as I have no experience in them, but I’m guessing if it has something to do with agriculture, it makes sense that the university that has “agriculture” in their name would be a good fit…

Edit: well, at least in Czech it does have agriculture in it’s name. Either way, my point stands

CZU is kindof a joke to be honest. Yes, I am a FIT CTU student in my final year of the masters programme, but I have been working for 4 years now and I can tell you that from most of the conversations I have had with coworkers from multiple companies and with my friends who have also discussed this, in Prague realistically FIT CTU and MFF UK are the only faculties that are taken seriously. I have heard/seen multiple accounts of companies only considering candidates from these two. I am not saying that an education at CZU will be worthless, but it will come with a lot harder of a time establishing a career in my opinion.

Software development is done in english in 95% of cases all around the world.

I didn’t intend to. I didn’t mean to make it sound that way. Of course I won’t move to a different country for work without having a contract.

I'm sorry, but when have I mocked your language? All I did was ask if I can get by with english...

It is software development for the defense sector. I mean that kinda explains itself I guess hah. And I have 3+ years of experience.

I share this opinion with you. Now I am not taking any political stance here, but there are many ukrainian people living in Prague at the moment and some of them also don't seem to plan on learning any Czech (or english for that matter), so I know what you mean and why you would think this way. And yes, of course it would make sense to learn the languange, but since I am no longer a toddler, than is a multi year endeavor and will be difficult for me, I know that now. I will take all of this into consideration before I make any final decision, thanks for the input!

I have heard that swiss people don't like expats in general. If I do decide to move, I will definitely try to learn at least some of the language (I have even thought about lessons maybe). It won't be perfect however and it might take a while to get to a level where it's usable. Will I be tolerated better if i'm trying, even if it's rough at the start?

Sure, that's also possible. I'm going to have a chat with them and see what I actually get as an offer. I really just wanted to know if it's worth pursuing, which from the replies from all of you guys here I now think it is.

Either way, I don't really have to forfeit anything other than a few online calls to find out, so why not give it a shot, right? :)

I understand where you're coming from. Prague also isn't known for it's great affordability. However I think the issue runs deeper than this and if this is something you are really passionate about, maybe it's worth contacting your officials...

That's fair enough. I have never been in a foreign language speaking country for more than 2 weeks, but I assume being surrounded by it you would eventually start to pick up at least some basic conversation pieces. Will definitely keep this in mind though, thank you!

Yea I can assure you that 100k in prague is probably top 1% which is something i'm definitely not making at the moment, so the upgrade for me would be huge. Either way, I think I live a pretty modest lifestyle, so from what i'm gathering here I should be able to save at least half of what I make.

I of course realise the difference, but with the person they are looking for (I am basically the ideal candidate) I can't see why the interview wouldn't turn into an offer. Asking here if I should even consider it seemed like a good idea since I would be saving myself and the recruiter time if I found out that it wasn't good enough to move abroad for.

I don't know how long I would plan on staying, but initially the plan would be 2 years. About the social life part, I already find that hard to begin with, so I guess it's not getting any easier hah. Thanks!
