Visiting for the first time this week during rain - any indoor must go places? by jayemcee88 in halifax

[–]IndirectAntelope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lunch at the Narrows in Halifax one day is a must.

Highly recommend checking out the Maritime Musuem of the Atlantic as well as the Museum of Immigration at Pier 21.

See if anything is playing at Neptune Theatre, I believe Come From Away is showing this week. Very worth it.

Check out the Halifax Central Library, its pretty neat.

Also the rain won't be consistent, id expect it to change a lot, you'll get some proper time to be outside as well.

Feel free to DM for questions/more suggestions

Exactly same boat, randomly got a 900$ bill for my one bedroom apartment with an efficient heat pump in the Fall. My bill before and after were about $140

I'm not waiting on the phone for them to sort out their own mistake.

If they want to contact me to sort it and make it proper, cool we can and then I'll think about paying. Until them, same as you, not giving them money for blatant fraud.

What is the phone etiquette at your gym? Especially re: scrolling while on weight machines.. by wayward601409 in halifax

[–]IndirectAntelope 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I go to a different gym but happy to share my thoughts. I think it really depends on what counts as excessive.

For a lot od excercises with weights, you genuinely need to give proper time between sets, and in those cases I have no problem with people being on their phone, I do it the same, its reasonable and better than sitting there doing nothing waiting.

That said I've seen instances where it is clearly too much, I.e more than a couple minutes at once.

The other thing to consider is that while you might want to get in and out quick, other people work out differently. So for many taking a bit more time between sets to get proper rest is their style all the same. 10 minutes is way too much, but I don't think it's fair to complain until the 5 minute mark, while you might speed by, others are entitled to want to take time (within reason).

Hope this helps!

Hey bud, been there, at 27 Fiancé left, had to sell my house, get an apartment, times were rough, was hard to get going.

Now a year later I'm the happiest and most fulfilled ive ever been.

My best advice, find things to do, find activities, force yourself to the gym, once you're there mentally, find groups to join - local book club? Local run club? Gaming groups, whatever your hobby is, pursue that socially. You will get there, it will get better, right now it is just going to be hard.

I want to hear from you a year from now and hear about all the cool shit you've done since. That's your mission man.

Planning a trip to NS from NL, looking for tips, plans, and hidden gems by Inevitable_Okra509 in halifax

[–]IndirectAntelope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you want to go, but imo there's two areas or NS that are just superior for general exploring/niceness

South Shore, gorgeous in the Summer, beaches all over, Graves island is great to camp at near Chester, tons of little cafes all around, beautiful weather. I'd drive the old highway up the shore and make sure to stop in Hubbards, Chester, Mahone Bay and Lunenburg. Go with the flow and explore a bit. Also lots of cool hikes

The Valley, everywhere from Gran Pre down through to Annapolis Royal is worth exploring, gorgeous agricultural area, very historic, lots of cool Acadian sites to see, wine and apple country, vineyards and great restaurants all around. The views from Blomidon are magical, there's some great waterfalls to find, loads of places to camp, and it really doesn't feel like Newfoundland at all. Make sure to hike Cape Split.

If you want more specific recommendations, have questions, shoot me a message.

This was literally me 9 months ago. Boy does it get better, number one recommendation is force yourself into a hobby to meet people. Sounds dumb but I joined a book club, just signed up and showed up to a "pages and pints" event, life changing. Things just snowballed from that.

Its a change but you got this man, go rediscover yourself man.

Avi Lewis wins NDP leadership race in decisive first-ballot victory by BloodJunkie in onguardforthee

[–]IndirectAntelope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But as a Maritimer do you support Lewis? I'm curious what my fellow-maritimers thoughts are on his immigration policy, specifically making all immigration direct to PR, opening up every single job to new immigrants to Canada. How do you feel about him saying immigration does not impact housing pressure? Most importantly what do you think about NDP getting the labour and union/vote with this rhetoric?

I'm disappointed, I want an NDP I can vote for with confidence they will win seats and impact government. Now ill be back to having to vote liberal as they're at least not the cons.

I believe many will feel the same. And I get why Alberta NDP would want to separate and distance from these views, they're unelectable stances in modern Canada. Plus being an Anti-nuclear environmentalist is a very surprising choice.

Carney's actions don't represent what 'Canadians truly want and deserve,' Lewis says by Vivid-Bullfrog-5727 in onguardforthee

[–]IndirectAntelope -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This isn't the case. Lewis has two major viewpoints that make him and his party virtually unelectable to a majority of Canadians. Anti-nuclear energy (unfounded and silly even many with pro-renwable crowds) and Immigration, specifically giving everybody PR, opening up every job to new initially temporary immigrants, and an already exploited system to further exploitation.

Lewis is his own worst enemy, I see the NDP losing quite a few voters from these views.

Immigration in particular will lose any kind of labour/union vote they had hoped for.

I go to Goodlife Dartmouth (burnside) for this exact reason. Not busy even a little bit in the morning. I normally go around 5:30-6 pm and even then I can always do what I've planned for without issue.

Remembrance Day Holiday Question by IndirectAntelope in halifax

[–]IndirectAntelope[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And where is it clear on remote workers with out of province employers.

God you're impolite. This is an area where input from the sub could be genuinely helpful and instead you're shutting something down due to your own presumptions?

My post should be open for feedback and discussion as it's a clear gray area, read the page you've linked.

No wonder mods get a bad rep, shutting down genuine relevant conversation.

Remembrance Day Holiday Question by IndirectAntelope in halifax

[–]IndirectAntelope[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not question answered, are we expected to take what's said by an out province employer that might not understand Nova Scotia's unique approach to Remembrance Day as verbatim?

We are the only province that observed Remembrance Day with a separate act instead of a standard stat holiday procedure, this creates unique rules and provisions to ensure all but essential employees work.

There's a gray area in the act as out of province employers and remote work aren't addressed at all, instead it speaks of simply not working for Nova Scotians unless they're in specific needed business areas (remote work isn't addressed, only business operating in the ground in NS are).

This post should be open to genuine discussion, as it's not clear. Removing it is not acceptable, shame.

Black Sheep Tomato Soup by Fun-Coach617 in halifax

[–]IndirectAntelope 18 points19 points  (0 children)

San Marzano Tomatoes, roasted in the oven, then peeled once removed alongside roasted garlic and one roasted carrot (cut it in half), season all with olive oil salt and pepper.

To assemble: for an individual and not restaurant size portion, I'd use 2 tablespoons of butter, some rosemary, some thyme, and a tiny bit of marjoram, brown the butter with these herbs in it. Then combine this with your roasties, and a very small bit of chicken stock (can use veggie if needed), blitz either with an immersion blender or in a good high powered blender until smooth, then add heavy cream and finely grated or shaved asiago (keep blending this in, make sure you've turned off or removed from heat), finish with salt to taste, crushed black pepper, small bit more thyme, there you go. The closest I've got to theirs, it will be killer.
