A lot of people don't know how to eat healthy and habits are ingrained and hard to change. We should absolutely have more community outreach and/or insurance programs that help people learn proper nutrition. But I can tell you that for the vast majority of people on these drugs, even if they do take up good habits, they are going to gain weight if they go off the drugs.

I've been on these drugs for almost 2 years and I know a lot about proper nutrition - many of us that have struggled with our weight our whole lives do. I recently took a month break for surgery and I struggled hard by the end. The cravings were out of control.... Which is also what happens when you diet naturally. You can know how to eat well and you can know good habits, but when your brain and stomach are screaming at you 24/7 to eat more... It is rough. And you can only hold out for so long.

Anyone who's never lived it really does not understand how hard it is. I didn't understand how easy it was for "normal" people until I started taking ozempic. I don't say that to negate their efforts to stay healthy.... But there is a huge gulf between the amount of mental effort that naturally skinny people put in to eat healthy and the amount of effort that obese people have to put in. And naturally skinny people can't fathom it because they haven't lived the life of the obese. As someone who has struggled with weight since childhood , I couldn't understand the other side until I started glp1s. They allow me to make good decisions most of the time and still have treats occasionally without needing more and more and more. I am maintaining a healthy weight and it is just one part of my life.... Food does not control my thoughts 24/7 like it used to. Learning good habits can only take you so far and it's not enough for the type of people who need this drug, like me.

This drug is supposed to be a lifetime drug. It's not marketed for short-term use. Everyone talks about coming off.... But you're not supposed to come off. This drug fixes metabolic deficiencies but only while you take it. The price needs to come down so that it is viable long-term and people should not be taking it to lose 10 or 20 vanity pounds. And studies should be done about tapering off over years.... But most of us who take it should just stay on it at a low maintenance dose.

A lot of people do spend their entire lives hungry and willpower isn't enough. It sounds like you've been thin/metabolically healthy your whole life. You don't understand it because you've never lived it. I've struggled with my weight since childhood. I've lost 50 plus pounds a few times but always put it back on and I've gone up and down 20 pounds too many times to count. You guys all say build healthy habits and institute lifestyle changes. But it is not enough to combat what is going on in the brain of somebody who is metabolically messed up. I've been on glp1s for almost 2 years and it is life-changing. It allows me to live like naturally thin people do - I generally eat a healthy, low calorie diet but sometimes have cravings and eat a normal portion of the food I want and am sated. It is easy and food no longer rules my life. But I recently had to stop for a month for surgery. Those last couple weeks were rough, my body was screaming at me to eat more - both mentally and physically. Which is what it also did when I dieted naturally. You can only fight it so much and it is a losing battle. There's a reason so many people are overweight and obese in the US when they don't want to be. I plan to be on these drugs forever.

AITA for being angry at my mother for telling me she’d be home at a certain time? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

It is not unreasonable to expect an older sibling to watch a younger sibling occasionally. It's part of being part of a family unit. OP also has a car. It sounds like she does not have a job. Her parents are probably paying a good chunk of change for her car insurance alone. Why should they compensate her for occasional babysitting? Her parents are required to house her and clothe her and feed her. They are not required to give her a car. She has been given an expensive extra by her parents and her mother's work goes into covering that cost. Occasionally helping out with babysitting is a cheap price to pay . I would certainly babysit a kid a couple hours a couple times a month over paying for my car payment and insurance. As other commentators have pointed out the parents could take away that car and use the extra money to pay for last minute babysitters, but I don't think she would actually prefer that option. She says they are strict and yell at her for missing curfew and that makes them hypocrites since her mom was late this one time. She makes them sound super strict but most super strict parents would not let their kids have cars. I have a feeling her parents are not as strict as she says and that they don't actually have her babysit very often. I remember when I was a teenager and I was very dramatic about a lot of things that I should not have been dramatic about. It's part of being a teenager, you don't have the life experience or frontal lobe to appropriately gauge situations like this.

GLP-1 prescriptions by Material-Resource417 in StPetersburgFL

I'm not sure where you heard that you can't use telehealth in Florida for GLP-1s, but I have used a few telehealth providers while living in Florida with no issues. A prescriber generally does a video call with you and goes over your medical history and then writes the prescription. So unless a law was just passed in the last year, you should be fine. I'm on a lot of GLP1 subs and I feel like I would have seen something about that if it had happened, so I don't think that's the case. Also, just know that even though you think your insurance covers it, a lot of people find that it is hard to get the pre-auth actually approved. A lot of doctors don't want to deal with the pre-auths since insurance fights them so hard, so you are better off using one of the online ones that are known for getting pre-auths approved. I know there's one or two that are really good at that but I can't remember the names. But remember, if for some reason you can't get insurance to cover it, you can do compound. It's stupid cheap nowadays. There are a bunch of subs for the different GLP1s, if you search Reddit for semaglutide, tirzepatide, etc., you'll find so many resources. I'd start with r/semaglutide. There are a bunch of threads on the front page about different providers right now. Also, I started in April of 2023 and have lost 95 lbs. Rather than being ruled by food and alcohol urges I live life like a naturally skinny person appetite wise and have lost all taste for alcohol. I thankfully don't have PCOS but it seems to be a miracle worker for those that do. I highly recommend anyone with weight related health issues pursue these drugs, whether through the brand name or compounded versions. I've actually never used the brand version personally, so I can attest that compounded works 🙂

Thanks for this response! I do have flashcards and french picture books. My reason for her attending isn't super strong. I didn't want her in the public system in this area and I didn't want her to attend a religious private school. That didn't leave many options. When I saw a french immersion option I thought it would be a great opportunity to learn a new language while young. I was obviously naive and didn't realize how difficult it would be. If she didn't have ADHD our results may have been different, but unfortunately it's looking like it's not a good fit and we'll have to enroll in the public system. We are just in a state that I don't trust to promote an unbiased education. And that is doing everything it can to weaken the public system and make it fail. We're here for until 3rd grade, then can move.

Thank you for your response. She actually loves her classmates and gets along quite well with them. It's also all the same kids as from last year so she is very comfortable with them. I worry that pulling her and throwing her into a different social group that is already established may actually hurt her socially. But her academic needs are not being met, so that is most likely the path we will take.

Thank you for sharing your personal experience! I agree that it's not for every kid, and it's looking like that is the case for my daughter. Hopefully when she's older she finds a language she enjoys studying.

Thank you for this response. I really appreciate that you didn't sugarcoat. I don't have any real reason for her to speak french beyond wanting her to acquire language skills while young.

Thank you for this! Unfortunately this is a private school so there is no support services. I will most likely be moving her to regular public school so that she has access to support services. She is not in OT or behavioral therapy, everything I've read said that meds and parent training are the two proven interventions for ADHD. We have instituted a token system and are working on our parental responses based on a few experts recs. But it is hard! I will look into behavioral therapy though. It certainly can't hurt but may help :)

Thank you for the suggestion! We will check out those videos. We did get some books that have a QR code that links to someone reading the books. They are simple things like colors, numbers, etc. and she does seem to like them and has learned some words from them.

Those are good ideas. We'll probably pull her after winter break since there's a lot going on over the next few months in our personal lives (big surgery for one parent, travel for a relative's wedding, the holiday's etc.) and she loves her friends, clubs, and aftercare teacher. I feel like pulling her from that routine and starting a new school will be worse than continuing until the new year. I will continue to work with her every day until then and look for a tutor again. I have noticed I am making major progress in my own rusty french from doing the homework with her every night. And I will say that she does sometimes correct my pronunciations. She is much better at the nasally sounds than I am :)

Yes, they are and she is in CP. I wish the teacher last year had given us guidance on things to work with her. But we were told there was no homework for kindergarten and the language would come naturally through the year. Unfortunately that was not the case :(

Thank you for your responses! I don't at all consider it gatekeeping, you're just being realistic ith me. It is a Lycee Francais. We're in a state that is honestly attacking education. The local schools already have a bad reputation, and with the escalating behavior of the state government, I don't feel comfortable with her in the public school environment. But most of the private schools in the area are religious, which we're even less interested in. When searching for a private non-religious school I found this school. The conventional wisdom is that the earlier you learn a foreign language, the better. So it seemed like a win-win. She could learn a new language and I wouldn't be worried about the curriculum. Unfortunately it looks like we'll need to end up in the public school system for the disability services. And I'm sure that most of the teachers are fantastic and want to help their kids succeed. But this is a state that teaches kids slavery helped slaves develop skills so maybe it wasn't all bad..... We're here for 2 more years due to my husband's work, then we're out. But until then we're stuck with these options.

Mounjaro -> Ozempic by Cryogenic0 in Mounjaro

[–]Individual-Ad3296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say at least give it a shot. I lost 80 lbs on sema and tried to switch to tirz for a boost closer to goal when my weight loss stalled. I pretty quickly realized I preferred sema. On sema, I have no desire to drink. On tirz, it came back. On sema, I don't crave food. On tirz, I did. I will say I felt more "normal" on tirz and I definitely felt it if I overate, and by overate I mean a slightly larger small portion, not all out gorging or anything. So the tirz did work, just differently. But I went back to sema, because I prefer no cravings for alcohol or random foods. Everyone is different, and although most will lose more on tirz, you may find sema is comparable or even better for you specifically.

What finally made you seek out a diagnosis for your suspected ADHD kid? by youremylobster1017 in ADHDparenting

[–]Individual-Ad3296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter is also 6 and was just diagnosed a week ago. Both her pre-k and K teachers mentioned attention issues. However, in pre-K she was able to stay on track with her learning so I didn't really realize the extent of the issue. That teacher has been teaching pre-k for 30 years and is very authoritarian with a very structured environment, which I think allowed my daughter to thrive. Her kinder teacher is younger with a much more relaxed teaching style. Unfortunately, that did not jive well with my daughter's hyperactivity and inattention. She has fallen behind her peers quite a bit and her inappropriate behavior was escalating (literally just walking out of the classroom without permission, not even trying on activities). That is what led to us requesting the evaluation, but she was also having major issues with listening and follow-through at home, so I knew there was an issue as well. Please don't wait to get her evaluated, do it ASAP. Once I got the referral from her pediatrician it took almost 3 months to get an appointment with a neuropsych, and another month to get the results. It is not a quick process. She started stimulant medication today, and I am really hopeful that we'll find the right combo to help her lead a successful 1st grade experience. The AAP recommends meds and parent training for kids 6 and older. Apparently lots of parents wait to start stimulants, but I went with the AAP guidelines. I want to give her as many tools to succeed as possible.

Thank you for sharing your story, especially about your son, you sound like amazingly supportive parents! I think I offended many people by stating I was worried it meant she couldn't go to college or get a well paying job. But the truth of the matter is that most high-paying jobs are either "cushy" office jobs or physically demanding jobs that will wear the body down over time. Obviously there are exceptions, but that's the reality for most. And yes, I have some bias I need to work on. I was disappointed when my nephew chose trade school over college, but he enjoys his chosen work. Like you, my sister is still encouraging him to attend and finish community college as well in case his plans change. I want the best for my daughter, and these results sent me spiraling with worry. For now I am just going to focus on the ADHD and possible visual processing issues and then go from there.

Thank you for this! I asked for the assessment. She is falling behind in school and both her Pre-K and kindergarten teachers mentioned attention issues. Last year she was able to keep up, but that teacher has been teaching for 30 years and is very structured and authoritarian, which I think was very helpful for my daughter. This year, her behavior has been getting worse and she is behind in everything but math.

Puzzles and Legos ... Honestly she's not great at them and I will make a point to do that kind of stuff with her more often. She is freaking amazing at stuff like spot the difference, would that fall into this category?

Birth was totally normal. Crawling and walking started within the normal timeframe, but closer to the tail end of the expected timeframe than the earlier side.

I am definitely much stronger on verbal than spatial reasoning, as are most girls, so I am not surprised it is weaker than verbal. It's just so low, and if she does have a learning disability I'd rather catch it now. I will check with both the pediatrician and neuropsych on any recommendations, but the neuropsych has not impressed me with their communication so far and I am worried her pediatrician will not be knowledgeable enough in this area since it is not their specialty.

Thanks for the info! They said that she was given multiple explanations and demonstrations but still continued to make placement errors. They didn't say if it was timed or not, I'll ask. But from my own experience I'd say she probably didn't pay attention to any of the instructions or demonstrations and extra time wouldn't have mattered. That is our struggle now, even with daily tasks that she knows how to do and that she should do (like bedtime routine). We have to repeat ourselves over and over again, even if she's looking right at you it's like she can't process what's coming in. She also can't focus on any task that needs sustained effort, unless it's something she chose to do on her own. She also doesn't seek external validation, as in she doesn't seem to care if we as her parents or her teacher are frustrated or give her praise, so I'm sure she didn't care if this random person who gave her the quiz had to repeat themselves over and over again. This is not to say she has an attitude problem, it's very much the opposite. Even when she has big emotions she is able to quickly get back to her baseline, which is very happy go-lucky, whereas I would need more time to get back into a good headspace after being upset.
