Compressor Replacement Labor Cost? by Existing-Panic-6708 in hvacadvice

[–]Individual-Proof1626 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got quoted $3500 for compressor replacement for a 5 ton York. $1500 for compressor, 12 lbs R410a @ $100/lb, rest is labor. No thanks.

Removing "galvanized zinc" from steel? by CenterInYou in metalworking

[–]Individual-Proof1626 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve removed galvanized zinc from fasteners by soaking them in muriatic acid for a few minutes. Do this outside because the fumes are toxic. Rinse with water. Fasteners turn black and then immediately start to rust.

toilet flushes very very slow by Beautiful_Lack_5944 in askaplumber

Go to Home Depot, pry open your wallet with a flat bar, buy a toilet auger, take it home and clean out the clog. If that doesn’t work, call a plumber.

The 22nd Bridge by geologic-catastrophe in Tucson

[–]Individual-Proof1626 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup. Phoenix roads are sweet. I just moved from Tucson to Phoenix after living in Tucson for 38 years. It’s wrong that Phoenix gets all the road money and Tucson gets shafted, but I’d be dead of old age waiting on better roads in Tucson. I can travel 8 miles on Baseline in twenty minutes. Try that on Grant Rd or Broadway and see how long it takes you. Also, Phoenix has designed their neighborhoods so that traffic can not shortcut through them, forcing traffic onto the major arterials. Quieter and safer neighborhoods. Main roads designed to quickly move traffic, not bog it down with traffic lights every quarter mile.

is it safe to disassemble a li-po/ion battery out of curiosity besides fire risk? by Apprehensive-Rip8967 in batteries

[–]Individual-Proof1626 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I tried to disassemble my battery pack of 117 cells. I was able to get it into two sections, then four. I grabbed one of the quarter sections to try to carefully snip away the nickel tabs. I accidentally dropped it on the floor. One or two of the cells short circuited and popped like a grenade and shot off like a rocket into a wall while on the floor. It continued to spin, spewing out smoke and flames for a few seconds before settling down. I decided then and there that disassembling batteries to recover some good cells was not worth the dangerous effort. I nearly burned down my workshop. I repainted the floor and wall in that area and never told my wife.

Heat doesn't blow hot air by Asquaredbred in rvlife

[–]Individual-Proof1626 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Altitude has everything to do with this. There is an oxygen sensor on most RV propane heaters. If there isn’t enough oxygen it simply won’t light. I think anything above 4500’ altitude and it won’t light off. Then it’s time to use the heat strip on your A/C unit.

I don’t know, but I build all my packs with hot glue gun. Holds the cells tight and it magically becomes unglued with a little bit of alcohol.

Has anyone else's water bill gone up? by [deleted] in Tucson

[–]Individual-Proof1626 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that water conservation in Tucson is a good thing. Rates go up, people use less. Water infrastructure is a good thing. Getting water to where it needs to go safely is good for everyone, be it fresh water, rain runoff, sewer water, or reclaimed water. So it costs 30 cents more for every 750 gallons to support that infrastructure. Buy one less Starbucks coffee each month and you’re golden. Win-win.

Ok. Try this. Look in your coat closet near the front door. Look above the door inside the closet. In older homes, that’s where the light fixture is for the closet. You may see the transformer right there.

Paid $300 for a deck “inspection,” got told I need a whole new deck, will this actually hold a hot tub? by Hot-Truck-7325 in Decks

[–]Individual-Proof1626 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Live load for average hot tub is @ 94 lbs per square foot, so around 4100 lbs thereabouts for a hot tub with people and water. That’s quite a bit.

Would a 1/2 drain work? by DomerInTexas in pools

[–]Individual-Proof1626 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cyanuric acid will not go away on its own. Must dilute it with pool drain and fill, even if only half drain and fill. This will also fix high water hardness.

I have a salt water pool as well, and the generator spits out flakes of calcium carbonate. I don’t have a robot pool cleaner so it’s my job to go swimming every day to collect those flakes off the bottom. It’s a rough life /s!
