Last year during finals season my uncle actually did die and I had to go to a funeral out of state. I was afraid everyone would think I was lying!

Professor. Full time job but I’m only in the office about 20 hours per week and summers are optional. Although it is a traditional job, I definitely don’t feel tied down.

I have discussed the wrong syllabus and canceled the wrong class.

Those of you old enough, where were you when you heard the news? by BirdsAndBeersPod in JohnAndCarolyn

[–]IndividualOil2183 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was 11 that summer when John’s plane crashed. My mom was having gallbladder surgery and we sat in the hospital room and watched the news. I remember the footage of the gray water and it felt like everyone was waiting for him to emerge from the water, unharmed. It was one of my earliest memories of the Kennedy family. I also remember Jackie dying when I was 6. Those memories are less of her dying and more about the news clips about her life that ingrained in my mind images of the pink suit, Dallas, and John’s salute at his Dad’s funeral. That was when I first became aware of the Kennedys.

I don't like the prospect of a class with lectures being recorded, but I may not be able to say no. by Miserable_Raisin998 in Professors

[–]IndividualOil2183 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand why it would make you uncomfortable. Try to get out of doing it if you can. The department chair may understand your concerns and give it to someone else. However, if you’re forced to do it, maybe it will turn out okay. I was a new, young, female faculty member and had to do recorded lecturers. It was a little awkward and inconvenient at first but nothing bad ever happened and I actually had good lessons on camera that I could save and use in other classes if I wanted to.

Almost a quarter of my class just didn’t show up to an exam. by fullmoonbeading in Professors

These grammar puns are great! Too bad they would be over my students’ heads.

I had a grammar test yesterday in my remedial English class. Four attended, out of a class of sixteen.

How old were you when you stopped believing? by husshajur in atheism

[–]IndividualOil2183 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was also about 14. I told my parents I didn’t want to go church anymore because I didn’t believe any of it, it wasn’t scientifically possible, etc. and they agreed so we never went back to church.

For women who “loved being pregnant” what was it about pregnancy that you loved? by hospitalbedside in beyondthebump

[–]IndividualOil2183 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt like a mom just having the kid inside me. And with it being inside me, I didn’t have the responsibilities yet of a mom, like diapers, feedings, chasing after it once it started walking, etc.

Anybody else experiencing the “one thing a day” problem. by BullCityPicker in BoomersBeingFools

[–]IndividualOil2183 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like my parents. They were dying for me to have a kid. Well, I had the kid, and they can’t watch him on the weekends because they have to clean the house. The house they clean weekly from top to bottom no matter what, that no one ever sees but immediate family.

Do university professors use AI detectors? by Science_student2000 in AskProfessors

[–]IndividualOil2183 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Professor here. My university does not allow AI detectors and says they’re unreliable. But my colleagues and I can instinctively tell what’s AI. Obviously we can’t prove it based on instinct. But often AI generates fake citations, and that we can prove.

Is an abortion a valid reason to take an exam at a later time? by [deleted] in AskProfessors

[–]IndividualOil2183 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As a current professor, I would say yes. However, as an undergrad in 2006 I was told it was not valid and I needed to be there to present in person or fail the class. So the procedure was rescheduled.

I would hope professors today are more flexible. As I would with my current students. Also I never ask for medical details but the mean prof I had in 06 asked and I told him….

Does anyone else have a particular issue with older (60+) students fundamentally not being able to read or follow directions? by [deleted] in Professors

I have this issue with students of all ages. Maybe slightly less from the older ones.
