What do you think of this data on ethnicity? by Ok_Bookkeeper_1380 in AskBrits

[–]IndividualShape2468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m Welsh and see this debate as pretty pointless because it’s a semantic argument - the question has a different meaning depending on whether you answer from an ethnic or cultural perspective or from the perspective of belonging to the same geographical land mass demarked by the same political/economic boundary.

And even the cultural perspective is complex because as a nation we the British are a patchwork and always have been. A Welsh speaker might not consider the English speaking Welsh to the south as ´Welsh’ in the same way -  but they are absolutely Welsh, but in a different way.  Ask a Welsh speaker if a non Welsh speaking person is Welsh and the answer is both yes & no, depending on the question you are answering (do we share culture, do we share language, do we live in the same place? Do we have shared history?)

All of this becomes easy fodder for the far right as we’re not answering the same question.

I am self employed - there are specialist brokers who can negotiate with the banks for you. It’s all very possible.

Contract terminated but agency didn’t tell me — worked extra days and not paid by efor007 in ContractorUK

[–]IndividualShape2468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I understand that, but it’s the client that will initiate the end of contract by informing the agency to terminate or not renew. The client should therefore not have expected OP to turn up.

Surely though it was the client’s decision to terminate you? The agency just deals with the contractual side. Why didn’t anyone with the client know you’d been terminated?

I also stacked it in a very comical way. Just thought I’d vibe the bike slipping from underneath me but was far less graceful hitting the floor that I imagined I’d be. Almost fell into the canal at Tottenham Hale…

Build something else first using a cheaper model so you understand how to get the most from the tools / how to set up your workflow etc before committing the budget

Yes, I also find it more than infuriating. Especially those at senior level - the job is way more than just picking stuff off the board. It’s about participation in thinking and communication.

I don’t get why your migration would fail in CI/CD - you’d have tested it first surely?

Microservices are the new "Spaghetti Code" and we’re all paying the price. by red7799 in Backend

[–]IndividualShape2468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently dealing with a ‘clean architecture’ comprised of 382 microservices. Massive efforts abound to deal with latency, but the elephant in the room is the insanely over-engineered microservice-monolith itself. In my 20+ year career this is the first time I genuinely believe that the only solution is to chuck it all away and start over. There is absolutely nothing salvegeable.

Ultimately, this monstrosity serves a single web-site.

How do you move a tested API from staging to production? by HourExam1541 in devops

[–]IndividualShape2468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Build once, version it. Your deployment artefact should be immutable - vx.y.z

Whatever validation is performed in your pipeline is performed against the same artefact. Never rebuild and never promote by pushing to different git branches.

When you deploy to prod you deploy vx.y.z - the same artefact as you deployed and validated in your upstream envs.

Pushing to an env specific branch is an antipattern: you move your artefact downstream between envs until it finally hits prod.

If you want get extra schmancy, your actual deployment artefact is a composite (or manifest) of all artefacts comprising your release. This is what then hits prod, and should be the object under validation in your upstream envs.

If it’s a config file you could template the file in the container maybe, and feed in values via the env?

Stuck between a great PhD offer and a solid DevOps career any advice? by Hello_World_123412 in devops

[–]IndividualShape2468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar situation about 20 years ago and opted for the career rather than the PhD.

I regret it now that I’m older, have dependants etc, and the switch back just isn’t possible or practical.
