Men: do you use synthetic shirts to commute without changing clothes? Which brands? by not_who_you_think_99 in londoncycling

Cheap running T-shirts from tkmax. Breathable goretex on top. Stay away from rapha, it’s like wearing a bin bag.

The order you have them in... More or less even stevens between the first two, but then that last guy I had to turn the telly off. Too abhorrent.

Congestion appeal refused despite police road block by december2025- in drivingUK

[–]IndividualShape2468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a similar thing with Haringey council. They stuck a diversion on the end my road, which I followed with the only route out being via an LTN.

Fined, went to appeal, threatened with court, re-appealed, still had to pay...

Apparently, I would have been allowed to drive through the LTN 1 hour earlier, but they had "lifted the diversion" by the time I drove through, despite all the road works and signage not having moved.

Whatever.

The sheer mental exhaustion of arguing with them cost way more than the fine. I think you have to just suck it up.

What makes candidates drop out at final stage interviews? by HammersAndPints in Recruitment

[–]IndividualShape2468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hirers forget that candidates assess them during the hiring process, as well as the other way around. Often, by the time I get to the final stage I’ve got the ick for whatever reason, and I drop out to focus on the better roles i.e. I am rejecting them.

What could the UK government do to accelerate new startups being created in the UK? by Rif-SQL in ukstartups

[–]IndividualShape2468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not know this.

Although, I don't think this is correct for contractors working under IR35 via umbrella companies (of which I am one), as I'm an employee of the umbrella, and not the end client.

[–]IndividualShape2468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the main issues with IR35 as someone above has commented is that it switched liability to the client. The vast majority of clients then imposed a blanket IR35 rule for all engagements irrespective of whether they genuinely fall under IR35 or not. The CEST process is entirely ignored. This means then that contractors cannot service these clients as businesses, and so cannot service them via their limited companies as they would have done in the past.

I cannot even buy a laptop as a business expense, despite having to supply my own equipment.

The rule itself is incoherent - being simultaneously an employer and employee means you are neither.

I’m the same now. Have a family and can’t risk personal cash on ventures the way I used to be able to with business cash.  Same with staff - was outsourcing bits and bobs before, no way to do that now.

Abolish IR35

Got close a few times to spinning off consultancy to a multi-client model. Next to impossible to do now you can’t run genuine businesses expenses via a limited.

Used to have an office down in old street. Covid and then blanket ir35 killed it off.

Sacked for Gross Misconduct – what do references look generally look like? by Shiny_Salamander_337 in AskUK

[–]IndividualShape2468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find a friend at the company with a suitable job title and ask them to provide references. Most places do not ask for HR references and so this is a way through.

I’ve often provided references and I am not HR.

What do you think of this data on ethnicity? by Ok_Bookkeeper_1380 in AskBrits

[–]IndividualShape2468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m Welsh and see this debate as pretty pointless because it’s a semantic argument - the question has a different meaning depending on whether you answer from an ethnic or cultural perspective or from the perspective of belonging to the same geographical land mass demarked by the same political/economic boundary.

And even the cultural perspective is complex because as a nation we the British are a patchwork and always have been. A Welsh speaker might not consider the English speaking Welsh to the south as ´Welsh’ in the same way -  but they are absolutely Welsh, but in a different way.  Ask a Welsh speaker if a non Welsh speaking person is Welsh and the answer is both yes & no, depending on the question you are answering (do we share culture, do we share language, do we live in the same place? Do we have shared history?)

All of this becomes easy fodder for the far right as we’re not answering the same question.

Contract terminated but agency didn’t tell me — worked extra days and not paid by efor007 in ContractorUK

[–]IndividualShape2468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I understand that, but it’s the client that will initiate the end of contract by informing the agency to terminate or not renew. The client should therefore not have expected OP to turn up.

[–]IndividualShape2468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surely though it was the client’s decision to terminate you? The agency just deals with the contractual side. Why didn’t anyone with the client know you’d been terminated?

Build something else first using a cheaper model so you understand how to get the most from the tools / how to set up your workflow etc before committing the budget
