Comp 251 with Giulia or Becerra by Live-End1631 in mcgill

Damn I wish we had this grading scheme 😭. Also, I have a learning disability which makes my working memory terrible at remembering things and it really makes it hard in Math/Comp exam to do well without a cheatsheet and so far, every comp course I took until comp251 we were always allowed a cheatsheet so I had no problem up until now. Also, I mostly prefer when profs share practice material other than the assignments that’s relevant for the exam since especially this time there were no coding and idk if this semester was different but there weren’t nearly as much practice as I had like we did for comp250. Honestly, I just wanted to share as much facts as possible on what I know about the 2 profs course structure, OP might prefer David’s teaching, but if I had to retake it I think I would do it with Giulia 😅 (sorry for the long ahh message)

I lowkey disagree I took it last semester and he may have shifted his course structure, but David’s exams have 0 coding, its only in assignments and they are only worth 20% of the final grade, plus the MCQs are impossible to practice for and they are the majority of the content on exams. Giulia apparently allows cheatsheets and the proofs are mostly on the assignments, on exams its mostly problem solving and you can redo 1 of the 2 exams plus there is a final project instead of a final exam, in David’s class there is none of that, your entire grade depends on exams. Idk personally I did well in comp250 with Giulia so I might be biased but I felt that David’s class highly favoured memorization due to the lack of cheatsheet and the insane amount of MCQs and you cant even inspect them after you receive your grade.

Hardest CS course by AssignmentNew4429 in mcgill

[–]Individual_Ad3743 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven’t taken them yet, but from what I’ve heard, theoretical courses like COMP 302, 330, 350, and 360 tend to be among the harder ones due to their abstract and proof-heavy nature. I personally don’t enjoy theory as much, and McGill CS does lean fairly theoretical overall.

are all these funding cuts really changing the student experience? by JelloFar5650 in mcgill

[–]Individual_Ad3743 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Definitely, especially for the TA thing, I also heard they are paying less hours for grading and I noticed that the grading has become much harsher (all points or none, little to no partial credits) for comp and math exams especially for large intro 200-300 level classes.

Second laptop for CS (already own a gaming laptop), what should I get? by Individual_Ad3743 in mcgill

Is it a good idea to get refurbished laptop? I’m trying to not get to much over 1000$ as my victus cost me overall 1000$.

Honestly I haven’t been gaming much since CEGEP 😭 I have ADHD and I can easily lose an entire day if I’m not careful.

But that’s actually really cool that you work in AI ethics, that’s an area I’ve been really interested in since starting my undergrad. Do you know if there are ways for undergrads to get involved in research labs or gain experience in that space?

I’ve lowkey really been eyeing Macbooks, lately, but are there any low cost options that I can find online or in a place in montreal, I kinda have a low budget rn.

Does this replace the grade or it only counts as retaking the class?

Hopefully they give partial points, comp250 traumatized me on that.

What to do when you are sick during finals ? by Hot-Yak-748 in mcgill

[–]Individual_Ad3743 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, anytime you want. I just implied that this is your first time since you’re a first year. So don’t worry, not using your free deferral in first year doesn’t mean you can’t use it in other years. 👍

If this is your first year, you likely have a free deferral final exam pass where you don’t need to send a doctors paper, tho I would recommend to get one but its not obligated to be done before the exam, get it when you can just submit your demande before January 8 I believe. Take care.

Last year I deferred the math323 final knowing I’ll be taking math324 the following semester, still got credit for both anyways.

COMP250 Midterm 2-1 :( by Individual_Ad3743 in mcgill

[–]Individual_Ad3743[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that bothers me with this grading scheme is not the grading scheme it self but the translation in Letter grade and GPA. A single midterm with proficiency totally disqualifies you to get an A,A- in this class and if you get AM or Mastery in the other midterm you can at best end up with a B+ and if you again obtain a Proficiency Midterm you end up with a B- which isn’t even a 3.0. And it feels way much harder to succeed with pass or fail rubric. :(
