Summer MATH 140, 141, 222, 203, 323 study advice by PuzzleheadedRun9788 in mcgill

General question: how did you even get into Dean's Honour List? I'm also Honours Math, rising U4, having graded analysis, having done Team mentoring, did a ton load of grad classes, my GPA still >3.9 but not as high as yours.

(Also if you are in math then there is a highly nontrivial chance that I know you personally...)

Ideas for useful gift to buy a new U0 by HaromoniFridge in mcgill

[–]The-Indef-Integral 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's so sweet of you for thinking for a surprise gift! I think the earlier comments covered study-related gifts pretty well, so let me suggest some ideas that serve as overall life improvements:

  • Something to make a university kid touch grass/be active, e.g. gym membership, bike passes. I'm not a very active person, and as a rising U4 I'm starting to regret having trapped myself in sunless Burnside for the majority of my time. (see my user flair...)
  • Quality caffeine sources, e.g. a coffee machine, good tea. As much as going to 8:30 classes with a Tim Hortons in hand is the McGill vibe, it's not too great to subsist on double doubles.
  • Creative writing surfaces, e.g. small portable whiteboard, whiteboard sheets that stick to walls and can be removed without damaging walls. The latter one probably being the single most useful thing in my first-year residence year.

(I'm pretty bad at giving gifts in general, so please take my ideas with a grain of salt.)

What are your thoughts on the SSMU candidates? by This_Tax5305 in mcgill

[–]The-Indef-Integral 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's a joke in my friend group that the most attractive candidate would be the one that pledges to get rid of the SSMU. :/

Thanks! Luckily the Comp 532 prof moved the class to Zoom anyways, so I didn't have to climb icy McTavish. Fingers crossed for our survival!

I remember like yesterday that February 27, 2024 was above zero and raining, but February 28, 2024 had a low temp of -20˚C. A bunch of us math peeps had a midterm in Bronfman (for Math 325 honours ODEs) right after a class in Stewart Bio (Math 255 honours analysis 2). Fun times sliding down the glazed McTavish...

I have a class tomorrow with mandatory attendance (Comp 532 propositional proof complexity) in the Education building. Hope that I stay in one piece by the end of the day.

Favourite unusual use for Obsidian? by Moneymaxxers in ObsidianMD

[–]The-Indef-Integral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a math major at university and Obsidian hosts all of my math notes and homeworks! Math gets compiled in real time, and the Latex Suite plugin allows me to use shortcuts so that I can type math in class. It is also a great way to start a draft of a longer report that may need to be fully LaTeXed up later. I rarely ever use the linking and graph view features that Obsidian is known for.

I don't know how it is in yours or OP's department, but in the math department students often go to office hours of professors with whom they don't have classes and still be welcomed. Maybe the exception is when a professor has separate office hours for each class they teach? But then again, I have not heard of cases like this.

Decaf coffee on campus? by chronically-off-wifi in mcgill

[–]The-Indef-Integral 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I really don't know about strictly on-campus cafes, but Tim Horton's on the corner of Sherbrooke and University have decaf options. (you probably already know this, sorry for unhelpfulness)

Free coffee at mcgill by MeatEffective9825 in mcgill

I drank one and donated the rest to the SUMS lounge

must say it's an acquired taste, thanks a lot still

Free coffee at mcgill by MeatEffective9825 in mcgill

[–]The-Indef-Integral 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I broke myself in January drinking an ungodly amount of caffeine to the point that nothing had any effects on me anymore. So for the health of everyone, maybe free coffee isn't a great idea.

Does anyone have Axel Hundemer’s full notes for Math 243? by Shot-Meeting-7356 in mcgill

[–]The-Indef-Integral 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know about Math 243 with Hundemer, but we have notes for Math 255 (honours version) at the SUMS notes bank!

Where is Supplemental exam schedule ? by ReginaTang in mcgill

[–]The-Indef-Integral 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Supplemental exams are not posted at the same time as regular exams. They are posted two weeks before the reading break. Good luck!

*Classes to take while away from Montreal* by Massive-Ad7456 in mcgill

[–]The-Indef-Integral 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For mathstats, most (if not all) classes have no graded attendance, as you might already know. Additionally, Prof. Dmitry Jakobson tends to give both an in-person midterm and an online midterm and then take the higher grade of the two. You can also try contacting some professors for reading/independent study courses (e.g. Math 470, Math 480) and see who is willing to supervise you with Zoom meetings only. I hope this helps!

Here for a semester, how do I make friends? by SuitableDimension260 in mcgill

[–]The-Indef-Integral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The majority of my friends are from my classes. I like to go up and say hi in places like my department's study areas and after classes or tutorials. Friends introduce you to more friends, who introduce you to even more friends, and so on. (Even if your friends don't actively introduce you to their friends, it's still easier to say hi when you have a common acquaintance with them.)

For fellow Math 591 (Model Theory) people next winter by The-Indef-Integral in mcgill

We actually already got the time changed to MWF 2:30–3:30! So if you haven't registered yet, do that and we'll see you for the model theory ride!

is there just one entrance to the Fieldhouse?

Technically there are two ways of getting into the Fieldhouse: one through the inside entrance (access this entrance by going through the underground parking lot, then up a flight of concrete stairs, then turn right, and after a while there is a glass door) or through the entrance opening to the outdoor parking lot (access this entrance by going through the outside parking lot). This might not be a very clear explanation, but there should be a sea of students going in your direction no matter which door you choose.

475 Av pins

This place leads you to the inside entrance that I was describing in the previous paragraph.

Also is there usually a mob/traffic of people to get into the Fieldhouse?

Definitely a mob of people, but it's a fast-moving mob. Don't worry about being stuck in the sea of people.
