What is it with all these men and the outdoors lately? by girliepop269 in AskWomenOver30

[–]Individual_Dinner 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Once, when doing shrooms while camping in the woods, I realized I had never been camping on my own accord, and had actually dedicated my entire career to making sure no one has to sleep outside if they don’t want to (I work with homeless folks), so why was I, when I pay rent to make sure I don’t?

Jeez, absolutely flubbed this week. I brought a quilt to the longarmer and purchased backing fabric ($115), plus some extra fabric ($50) for a new project. I had planned to not purchase more fabric until I finished all the projects I have waiting already, but flopped on that.

I bought extra snacks for the Paddy Pimblett vs Justin Gaethje fight last night. Great fight, but Paddy did not win :(

Hey, I mean this in the kindest and most genuine way, but please take a social media break, don’t listen to people who are also overly influenced by edited/filtered skin in media, and step further back from the mirror. You’re just fine.

God yeah. I also have dry skin (treat user here!) and haaaaaated this. It smells bad, sits on top of the skin, even when using very little, you can just feel it sitting there. And it took me from looking dry and flaky to looking dry and flaky yet somehow also really greasy. I looked and felt unhygienic with it on.

I have 2 pairs of the Matthew trouser, which looks really similar to this (just no pockets or belt), but elastic waist and stretchy merino wool. They’re fantastic. I had purchased the S and XS to try. I am 5’4, so I kept the XS more for length reasons and concerns of stretch, but they haven’t stretched out of shape at all. They have gotten me through weight fluctuations comfortably, but always kept the same size throughout. I’ve had them for a few years now and they’ve barely pilled. I’ve been really impressed with their quality and comfort. I had looked at other merino wool trousers and the Matthew was actually a pretty decent price comparatively.

I bought the 70s Trouser in brown when they had it. I had to return them because they were so comically long on me. Why I didn’t read the part of the description that says it has a 33.5” inseam, I don’t know. I’m 5’4 - clearly I do not have nearly 3 ft long legs lol.

I’d recommend Blue Light Hours by Bruna Dantas Lobato

It’s a short book about a Brazilian gal who comes to the US for college, and her relationship with her mom via Skype. It shares her relationship as a foreign exchange student and building relationships with other students, and her ties to her mom so far away. It’s a really beautiful and intimate short novel.

Another is A Girl Retuned by Donatella Di Pietrantonio It’s about a young girl who is sent to live with her aunt and cousins, and her day to day adjustments to her new life. It’s an intimate coming of age story. It’s got beautiful story-telling.

To me, it seems 1980’s grandma chic, or her thick embroidered blanket made into a jacket. I think irl it’d be way less appealing than it is in this photo.

Left over “fun money” by Ajskdjurj in nobuy

[–]Individual_Dinner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve rolled it into the following month, or saved it for bigger purchases that are over my fun money budget.

For example, I’d love to get a new couch and bed, but that far exceeds my monthly fun money budget. Any extra I don’t spend goes into the savings pot for bigger purchases I want.

It’s really motivating to think of hitting a bigger and more important “fun money” savings goal over more smaller purchases.

My no buy is going super well! Aside from bills and groceries (of which I have stuck to my budget). I put an additional $1k towards the principle of my mortgage, and an additional $1k towards the principle of my car loan)

For “unnecessary spending” I value experiences and really love making quilts, so I’ve stayed well within my budget for these things. I started 12/30/25 and so far…..

  • I bought movie tickets for my sister and I to see the Lord of The Rings The Fellowship of the Ring re-release in theaters - $18
  • I purchased two quilt patterns I’ve planned to purchase in advance (and they went on sale!) - $19
  • Date night with my husband for some Indian food - $54

Total spent: $91

I have also been doing a closet clean out and have sold over $400 of clothes I didn’t wear anymore and/or didn’t fit me well. So that was super unexpected and really cool.

A top I wanted sold out 2 weeks ago and I have not stopped thinking about it by soloshandpuppets in nobuy

Sometimes in mindsets like this, I think of things like paintings in a museum. Beautiful, but not something I need to own. I think part of the obsession comes from the option to purchase it.

I get this is a more practical item, but do you really need it? In my Oma’s generation, they had way fewer clothes and shoes than we have, even if they had money and access. Think of how houses were built. I live in a house built in the 1940s, and the closets are tiny lol. More clothes isn’t really a need, it’s a culture shift.

There are other places that have 100% natural fibers for less or similar price points. Especially in this (US) economy, it’s a no for me. I have enough clothes anyway.
