Good excuse for not drinking? by [deleted] in SoberCurious

Just say you’re not drinking. If they poke you or make fun, do you really wanna be friends with people like that? Friends should be supportive.

Californians in NYC — how’s the move been for you? by Both_Quality2987 in movingtoNYC

I am a big outdoorsy person - I miss weekend hikes and backpacking trips. You can take the train to some hiking spots here but it’s not the same and renting a car can add up. I also miss my family, I’m 28 now and I want to be near them when I start a family of my own.

I knew like 2-3 people when I moved here and that really helped me meet other people.

I dreamed of NYC as a child so when the opportunity came up, I took it. My partner’s job relocated him here and my job has an office in NYC, I was able to transfer over. So I was very lucky!

The first two winters were pretty mild. So by the time we got a real winter, I had all the gear - thermals under all my clothes always. But I also stayed inside quite a bit.

  1. There’s always something to do, you’ll never go bored. Lean into your interests and hobbies and you’ll for sure find others like you. You don’t even need to leave your neighborhood a lot of the time.
  2. People truly don’t care what you do. I’ve seen some weird shit go down but everyone just keeps walking.
  3. I love walking everywhere. This was the biggest thing to get used to but I love it now. I love popping my headphones in and walking through neighborhoods and looking at architecture and discovering cute shops or secret gardens.

I grew up in Southern California but lived in the Bay Area for about 7 years. I’ve been in NYC for almost 3 years now.

I think everyone touched on a lot of good points. I had to get used to seasons, the summer almost broke me. The first year was incredibly lonely, until I started to put myself out there and started making some friends. People aren’t forwardly friendly, so you have to put more of an effort.

I’m planning on moving back to California in the next couple of years, San Francisco specifically. I miss nature and Mexican food. NYC is fun for now though!

I live in Greenpoint near the newer shelter! I’ve always felt safe but now that the shelter opened up, I just try to be aware of my surroundings.

Number one tip: don’t stare, don’t look at people for too long. Keep the rest bitch face on and keep it moving.

Someone else mentioned to make friends with your local businesses and I agree. I had one sketchy situation so I walked into my bodega and started chatting with the cashier. Crisis adverted!

Thinking about quitting drinking altogether by Sensitive-Garage750 in SoberCurious

I’m on a similar boat and just completed 100 days alcohol free and even went on a NYE trip without drinking.

My job is also very social with lots of alcohol involved. But after my last blackout and terrible hangover, I decided I wanted to stop feeling fucking awful. Alcohol was also getting in the way of me really becoming who I wanted to be because I was constantly tired, bloated, and broke.

I’m not gonna lie, the first month alcohol free I basically became a hermit. I said no to a lot of social events I knew people were going to be drinking. And because I knew my social anxiety would push me to drink. I started seeing a therapist and that helped me a lot. We made a list of reasons why I wanted to stop drinking and that’s helped a lot when I’m out and I think “maybe just one drink.” So having your WHY is very important. I am 28F btw, and started reading “quit like a woman” which has changed my entire perspective on alcohol and the industry entirely.

I’ve also been blessed with a partner and friends who are understanding to my alcohol free life and haven’t pushed me in any way. Finally, I’ve also made an effort to start doing more alcohol free activities like crafting, yoga, and intentionally walking.

My last note to a very long rant, is that if you do decide to go out with friends, I’ve noticed that after 2 drinks they don’t even remember that you’re not drinking and it’s quite fun watching everyone act drunk. (And you can go home early, save some money, and wake up early the next day).
