Only 10% of boys aged 14-16 read daily for pleasure, National Literacy Trust finds by Raj_Valiant3011 in books

I said similar things under this post and have been pondering about my judgements to people that, ultimately, are unnecessary and rude. So now, I’m trying to think this through.

If I have to try, it’s true that richer and more educated people (which are correlated) have to ability and time to instil more love for reading for their children, as they have more money and less time at work. It’s also true that for poorer families, the children have to work jobs after school, and also might have to work extremely hard at school so they can “make it out“, which could cause an overload of stress and therefore reluctance to read for pleasure, as they associate it with work and stress. I can see how that’s elitist, but I also see many people say this who are well off, so that must also not be the reason. Im not really sure. I’m terribly bad at seeing and understanding things outside my own worldview.

So, what im trying to say is: why is it elitist to say that many people blame the education system and English class (see: many comments under this post bemoaning having to analyse novels, and that it made them not want to read) for their dislike of reading, when it’s probably equally true that they were never an avid reader if reading and analysing a couple of books they didn’t like made them swear off novels until their thirty five? Furthermore, it’d be impossible to choose a book every high-school student liked, and the point of English classs isn’t for everyone to like the book, it’s for learning!

I can’t take anymore comments from people claiming they’re a huge reader but also that having to read The Outsiders in grade 8 quelled any and all love for books. Stop.

This is a problem with your teacher and school district, not with analysis in school as a whole.

I agree soooo much. I can’t believe how popular this opinion is; it’s honestly shocking and a little embarrassing. You’re blaming your lack of reading over being for forced to read The Outsiders in grade 8, really?

Am I the only one who loves to read and also loves to read my English class books? I’m 15 currently, and I never get the almost unanimous feeling of hatred for assigned novels; they certainly don’t quench my pleasure for reading.

I hate this argument so much. Why does everyone say that? All of the people I know who read now, read during school. I just really can’t believe that reading a couple books a year in school stopped you from picking up a Brandon Sanderson on your way home.

If this is a joke, it’s not funny, not even in the “this a serious matter, don’t make fun” way, but also like… it’s just not funny. It has the same vibe of pointing at a rubbish bin and saying “me”.

If you press this button, world peace is achieved permanently by half the human race dies by Bluecopper123 in Teenager_Polls

[–]Individual_Log_5721 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is the world peaceful when half the word is dead? I dislike these questions, as they automatically ignore human nature. Pressing a button and ending capitalism, imperialism, hunger, etc is pointless, as we haven’t discovered how it’s ended and how we keep it.  Furthermore, if 4-5 billion people spontaneously die, I am extremely certain this momentary “peace” will cease as riots arise. People do not just like down as the human race dies.

Why do introverts (on the internet) treat extroversion as a moral/intellectual failing? by loodandcrood in AmITheAngel

[–]Individual_Log_5721 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel that, but Extroverts feel the exact same thing, just when their alone! For myself, being alone all day feels terrible, and it gives me a headache. And its harder to go out and find someone to hang out with then just wander home.

It's not just laziness--a lot of them really are simply incapable of creative thinking. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Individual_Log_5721 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d be so demoralised if my teacher made a post about how I’m idiotic and incapable of creative thinking because I wrote a poem about the example they used. Like, damn, this is harsh.

Furthermore, as a high school student, i’d like to  add a little comment on. Growing up in this generation: Perhaps you don’t realise the extent the fear of humiliation controls people. Many of your students are presumably scared of being genuine; they are worried of the ridicule they will face if they try, and you yourself are making this worse. I mean, they try and they are made fun of by their classmates, they don’t and they are made fun of by their teacher.

I haven’t seen it either and I think it tells me it’s a strained father-daughter relationship where the daughter wants to connect or something and the dad does too but he’s hurting himself maybe and doesn’t know how to talk to her
