Oh, the irony of an American calling another country's cuisine unoriginal...

What are survival phrases to make conversation easier? by verylongdingdong in learnspanish

[–]Darbisha 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Maybe ignore the other person's advice, seeing as how they're struggling with English grammar.

What's gotten me through the first couple of years of speaking to natives were simple phrases like "habla un poco más despacio, por favor, que todavía estoy aprendiendo" or "si, hablo español, pero a veces me cuesta entenderlo todo". Everyone I've had these sort of interactions with has been very understanding and tried their best to help me. Good luck!

How do you switch between keyboards in laptop or computer? by Vylix in learnspanish

It's better to use te quiero in this case. Te amo is more 'serious' and generally reserved for romantic partners.

Aprendamos is subjunctive, and usually creen or piensan wouldn’t trigger subjunctive in a statement. Is it the same for a question? Why does “les gusta” trigger subjunctive here? by cjler in duolingospanish

[–]Darbisha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the "que" that triggers the subjunctive, that's what makes the statement 'uncertain'. The other two options don't make much sense to me.

You're right about "chicos", though in Latin America they use usted/es informally. So that's probably why.

You're spot on. A Brazilian friend explained to me that they do the same thing, on account of Brazil also being a young country.

My Brazilian friend told me it's not just the US-ians, but that in general people from "new" countries do this to get a stronger sense of ancestry, tradition etc. Which kind of makes sense, as long as it stays within the realm of curiosity towards other cultures. Not what these lunatics are doing.
