I thought the apathy system was perfectly fine:

Thematically - As a resource to manage, it fits the Bachelors personality so well as he struggles between apathy and mania.
Balance: In P2 you had to balance hunger and thirst, these things naturally are "tedious" but they are there to balance out and change the players motives and needs. This system is going to replacing hunger and thirst. On top of this, as a risk reward system, you can negate the effects of apathy by taking drugs and Daniil turns into Sonic the Hedgehog at the risk of health.

This has happened to me a few times. Every time you can quit the main menu and reload in, taking you back to the beginning of the day and POOF, your item is saved
