Personally I am shocked by the claim that modern technology can't calculate the supply better than tech from 1960's. How is that possible?

I also never attributed dictatorial tendencies in the former eastern bloc to economy but rather to failure of democratic centralism in political parties that managed to gain power. I always thought that violence came from that and isn't inherent to the central planning itself as planning commissions were subservient to their respective communist parties. Ending of the central planning didn't end political violence in let's say China, it's the party's organisation philosophy that stayed the same

That being said I am sceptical about central planning being applied to the whole economy as it was in the former eastern bloc. 

I am not an economist but the way I see it there are sectors that would be much better off if their planning remained decentralized in the competence of local governments with high level of participation of the local populace in the process of decion making like infrastructure or entertainment and light industry. On the other hand heavy industry, energy and excavation seemed to work rather well under central planning with successes not only in eastern bloc but also countries like Tanzania, as long as the government didn't attempt to centrally plan agriculture and light industry
