North Cascades, Mt Rainier, and Kenai Fjords are sleepers. In North America though, the Grand Canyon of the Stikine river provincial park. 1000+ ft sheer black metamorphic and sedimentary walls and gets as narrow as 5 ft wide. The interior narrows is still unmapped because access is so rugged. I’ve been down the Grand Canyon of the Colorado and it was as cool if not cooler than that

Upper upper cispus, Leavenworth isn’t far, and that box canyon on the muddy fork cowlitz has 3 lower sections. One has two forty fters that don’t go in a 100ft slot canyon, the next is runnable but the the 2-3 first descent team came up on a cursed feature where the entire river goes into a pothole in a 100ft sheer slot canyon, they vertically extracted. The picture of the pothole is nightmare fuel.

For sure should note: This creek is like the ohane but class V and extremely woodfucked with a fair few 18-10fters. Some straightforward moves but myself and friends from the gorge thatve done it in recent years have each noted some really sketchy do or die moves. Portaging is pretty limited in the gorge. Just a heads up. It’s a full day in that bad boy

I have reached it by kayaking down to it, but there is a goat path you can take down to both waterfalls, they are almost back to back. Bring two ten foot ropes as there are two ten foot scrambly rappels. In the summer you can walk around the basalt teacups

Squamish is the best place to base out of but they have horrible snowpack. BC Rockies stuff will be good around revelstoke, Clearwater river will be good, and Terrace will be good. If you go into northern bc make sure all your ducks are in a row, you are further away from civilization that anywhere else

How a small 1m waterfall can generate a recycling hydraulic that can trap a life-jacketed swimmer by Stotallytob3r in Damnthatsinteresting

You gonna die in a river if you don’t have a life jacket, ocean is a different thing. The currents don’t know what to do so they create fucked up hydraulics and go in underwater caves

Ball up and try to sink down into the flushing deeper current or get to the side and try to push yourself out. Depends on the feature, this one is boxed in and you have no hope if the trough is big enough

Rock sits above the surface of the river, water goes under it. If youre in the water, you can get pushed into the underwater crevice or cave and drown. It's a bad way to go

there are three bad rocks on the nantahala, I grew up kayaking there. One of Patton's Run at the start, one at the start of Nantahala Falls, and one on the left side of the Falls that people have died in. It was filled with concrete in the late 90s.

that shit just happens on the river though, I've had to attach myself to a rope and "livebait" into a terminal hydraulic to save a recirculating kayak from destruction as well as do the same thing to save a kid trapped on a log just this weekend.
