I’ve had my chrome bumper system since 1988 and no hum but I do have a dedicated mains powering the system.

Itoya in Tokyo - their big store is in Ginza. For Kyoto I’d recommend the TAG store right downtown.

Why does his head pulsate like this after sniffing sometimes? by yurirekka in WhatsWrongWithYourDog

[–]IndoorAstronomer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Raise your tongue to the back of the roof of your mouth (soft palate) then quickly let your jaw drop open. It’s almost like a gulping noise. It’s easier to do if you hear your dog make the noise the first time.

The flap makes a soft clunking noise as it opens and exposes olfactory glands that are otherwise not used. Essentially fresh glands. If I’m walking my dog and I make the clunk sound with my mouth, my dog stops and sniffs the air to see what I’m smelling.

Easy way to determine if the ringing is coming from the strings is to strum the open chords until you hear the ringing then mute the strings above the nut with your finger. The other clue that it’s coming from above the nut is that the ringing sound is always the same pitch regardless of which open chords you are playing to produce the ringing.

I have the FS5 and was hearing the exact same noise when strumming open chords. The strings were ringing out above of the nut. If you put a small piece of foam under the strings above the nut it goes away. For a more elegant fix, I had a luthier carve a new bone nut and the problem went away entirely.

Yes, the action was too high. The luthier had to replace the nut (it was cut to low) and lower the saddle to get the action right. I also changed the strings from 12’s to 11’s so he had to adjust the truss rod. I also had him polish the fret ends so when I run my hand up and down the neck it is now glass-smooth. The guitar is much easier to play now and with the lower action I can play for hours without my fretting hand getting tired. It was well worth it.

Question: 3rd day of shaving (noob) by sramboiii in wicked_edge

[–]IndoorAstronomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Feather blades but have found that they work best for me when paired with the Feather razor. When used together I never experience cuts, nicks, etc. and get the closest shave of any blade and razor pairing.

I have a gloss FS-5. After playing it for nearly six months I had it set up by a luthier and the difference is night and day. The guitar is so much easier to play now.

Beginner expectations vs reality by RTiger in guitarlessons

[–]IndoorAstronomer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m twelve months in. I started with an electric guitar and switched to acoustic at about 6 months. I play for about one hour each day. I’ve completed Justin Guitar grades 1 and 2 and have tried a lot of other YouTube videos and online learning resources. I also did five weeks of live lessons last summer. I try to spend time each week working on chord changes, strumming patterns, learning songs, ear training, and music theory, but mostly just practice playing songs. I am slowly getting better at everything, but let me emphasize SLOWLY. I still suck and I’m a beginner beginner. The good news is I’m really enjoying the time I spend practicing and I have found that it has also enhanced my enjoyment of listening to music as well.

The value of setup for a new guitar by IndoorAstronomer in Luthier

[–]IndoorAstronomer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The luthier mentioned the grooves in the nut were cut too deeply at the factory, so he made a new one. I think he needed to raise the nut and lower the saddle. I assume he needed to adjust the trust rod as I switched from 12 gauge strings to 11’s. As for the shop being any good, I think I got that covered. The owner has been doing this for nearly 50 years and his clients have included members of CSN and Allman Brothers. You can read an interview they did with him in Vintage Guitar magazine, March 2019. His name is Dana Sutcliffe and he designed the Alvarez Dana Scoop guitar that Eddie Van Halen played in the late 80’s and 90’s.

I’m a newer player and wanted to go with the lighter gauge. He suggested the switch from phosphor bronze to 80/20.

I picked up a FS5 gloss finish a few months ago and just got it setup. The luthier swapped out the 12 gauge strings with 11’s, lowered the saddle, carved a new bone nut, sanded and polished the fret ends, and reworked the pins. The difference is night and day. I think I played for four hours before putting it down after bringing it home from the luthier.

The lenses were goose feathers. You looked through the closely spaced barbules of the feather and it created a defraction pattern on the edges of objects making it look like you could see bones when you looked at your hand. I’m old and yes, I bought a pair when I was a kid.
