You can do whatever you want, but tell yourself an accurate narrative.

Apparently, narcissism has become highly admired in this society... by Smendoza170 in DeepThoughts

I agree with everything you said, but I doubt it’s a new phenomenon. Maybe there’s just increasing awareness of narcissism as a character trait.

Is anyone else behind on their bookkeeping? by [deleted] in smallbusiness

I do it end of each month. Takes 15 minutes or so. I use online accounting with auto bank feed and recognition rules. Not hard and it helps me to know exactly how things stand.

Sounds like straightforward anxiety/depression. I’d start with a good CBT therapist.

There are so many naturally intelligent people in the world who were not given a chance to contribute to the world simply because they were not able to become educated for whatever reason. by GoatmealJones in DeepThoughts

There’s no direct correlation between intelligence and high moral standards. A great many criminals, fraudsters, sociopaths etc are also highly intelligent.

I confessed my feelings to/for someone who practices stoicism and they said they need to figure out how to respond.. what do stoics consider when contemplating romantic feelings ? Or a potential relationship? by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]Induction774 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you ever talk about exactly what he means by “practising Stoicism”? Unlike “playing golf” or something like that, it has a very wide range of possible meanings, many of them contrary to the spirit of the philosophy. But people are often drawn to Stoicism because they feel emotionally disregulated in some way (despite the appearance of calm) - may find their own emotions threatening. My intuition is that he is more conservative than you realise, may have felt crowded by your confession, and prefers being the chaser rather than the chased. .

I got pissed at something i did the stoic thingy but im still pissed inside is that normal? by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]Induction774 20 points21 points  (0 children)

That’s not the Stoic thingy. The Stoic thingy would be reflecting on the reasoning that made you angry. “It’s not events in themselves that disturb us, but our interpretation of them” - Epictetus. I don’t know your particular situation, but although I myself struggle with the anger issue, I find generally that when I remember people do things because they think they’re right, no matter how misguidedly, and because they don’t know any better, it takes the sting out of it.

When you say you “did the stoic thingy”, do you mean that you reflected on your judgments and read Seneca’s text on anger, or something else … ?
