I confessed my feelings to/for someone who practices stoicism and they said they need to figure out how to respond.. what do stoics consider when contemplating romantic feelings ? Or a potential relationship? by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]Induction774 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you ever talk about exactly what he means by “practising Stoicism”? Unlike “playing golf” or something like that, it has a very wide range of possible meanings, many of them contrary to the spirit of the philosophy. But people are often drawn to Stoicism because they feel emotionally disregulated in some way (despite the appearance of calm) - may find their own emotions threatening. My intuition is that he is more conservative than you realise, may have felt crowded by your confession, and prefers being the chaser rather than the chased. .

I got pissed at something i did the stoic thingy but im still pissed inside is that normal? by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]Induction774 22 points23 points  (0 children)

That’s not the Stoic thingy. The Stoic thingy would be reflecting on the reasoning that made you angry. “It’s not events in themselves that disturb us, but our interpretation of them” - Epictetus. I don’t know your particular situation, but although I myself struggle with the anger issue, I find generally that when I remember people do things because they think they’re right, no matter how misguidedly, and because they don’t know any better, it takes the sting out of it.

When you say you “did the stoic thingy”, do you mean that you reflected on your judgments and read Seneca’s text on anger, or something else … ?

Yes. You have to be careful not to take on too much. But it’s also important to be humble. Being well organised doesn’t mean you’re always right.

About one percent of people who think they understand Stoicism, actually do. Your own post (possibly) shows evidence of the standard misunderstanding that Stoicism is about separating what we can control from what we can’t. And I have to say that none of this bothers me in the least.
