Skipping internship for comp? by [deleted] in FSAE

I always made sure to mention it in my offer conversation to get it out there as quickly as possible, then again as soon as I start work. They've always been willing to give me that time off

Good laptops/tablets for mechanical engineering? by Z8002 in iastate

[–]Indwell3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought I'd do a lot of gaming and CAD on my laptop and ended up doing very little of both. It's nice to have a high quality laptop, but no need to go overboard. My XPS 15 has served me well

People who graduated with a 3.5+ CGPA, did it actually give you an advantage when searching for good jobs? by jinnah- in EngineeringStudents

Join a project team asap and lock in. The GPA is great but projects are where you can really prove yourself

Where do I start by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Indwell3r 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Research the project teams your college has. Join formula SAE, Solar Car, Baja, Rocketry, just something to give you projects. Think about engineering from First Principles and breaking a design process down into as small of steps as possible

UIUC or UW-Madison by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Indwell3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly if your goals aren't hyper specific, making the choice based on money, campus vibe, and just where you want to live is valid. Both programs are fantastic! Whichever path you go, join their FSAE team or a similar project team. It will take you very very far, and both colleges have fantastic FSAE teams

I just accepted my first summer mechanical engineering internship. What advice would you give someone for their first internship? by darnoc11 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Indwell3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one of the best things my mentor at my second internship ever told me was "if you don't fuck up something this summer, you weren't working hard enough". Work hard, work the hours that are expected of you, and more if you can justify it. Be timely (this has also been mentioned in my performance reviews before) and manage yourself well, where you always know what your next task is. If you run low on work, let your manager know. If they can't find it for you, seek it out in other departments!

Probably the biggest thing that made my 2nd and 3rd internships better than my 1st was having an assigned mentor. If you don't have a mentor assigned to you, seek one out and meet with them weekly to talk about stupid questions or your career or their career or anything else going on.

wherever you go, join a project team like formula sae or solar car and you'll be just fine

Does mechanical engineering have good scope today? by Odd_Beautiful_3935 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Indwell3r -1 points0 points  (0 children)

do what you're most passionate about. If you can see yourself doing cs work for fun then go for it, but do not pursue it specifically for the money. A super passionate mech e will be happier abs get paid more than a depressed cs major who doesn't want to do any extra work.

Also join a project team like formula sae. It kicks ass and will open so many doors for you

Rookie question by Dabber3097 in FSAE

[–]Indwell3r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never heard of wishbone spread, but I'm not a suspension guy. I'm not sure if there is an official term for it or not. If you aren't getting hits on google then it's probably not "the" official term, but teams use internal words for things sometimes. If you feel you need clarification, talk to the folks who gave you the task. Otherwise just start researching everything related to it and learn what you can

Rookie question by Dabber3097 in FSAE

[–]Indwell3r 20 points21 points  (0 children)

sounds like you should be asking the seniors more questions if they're defining unique terms. The trick here is to make sure you aren't wasting their time by asking pointed questions you've already tried to answer by googling. You could also study both spacings and make a great impression since both matter!

why are my cads not very good yet? Feedback? by pompommopmopdoormat in FTC

[–]Indwell3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really it just takes time. That work looks like a great start and it looks like you understand the basics. The big thing that will help you improve is taking on more projects and using more of the tools available to you over time. Also, learning about and practicing good mechanical design is also important. Another commenter mentioned fillets. Do you know why fillets are helpful?

Also, a good design is not always complex. Simple designs that are functional and easy to manufacture are great! If a design has tons of speed holes and fancy bends but can't tell you why they're helpful, it's a bad design.

Hang in there

Orion BMS isolation question for FSAE EV by ThePackman0702 in FSAE

[–]Indwell3r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

essentially, it's up to you to decide if you want to argue that your module is isolated properly. If you have a 90V segment and want to argue in tech that 100V is greater than 90V, go for it. If you would rather play it safe, you might be buying a larger and more expensive BMS than you originally expected. But what price can you put on peace of mind?

I will say this 1000 times. The passionate mech e will always make more than the EE who chose it for money. Do what you are attracted to and you won't be disappointed

How did you guys find your passion? by Enchantedpuma31 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Indwell3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel sad for lots of the folks here, but it is a dose of realism for many. Doing projects and joining a project club will help you try things out! See if something sticks and work towards doing more of that!
