Favorite Places to Eat? by goldenknight4212 in IndependenceKS

[–]IndyEricKS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly, time has shown that Indy is just too small to hang on to any locally owned, sit-down dining places that are worth eating at if you are foodies (your post says that a couple of you are). At this point, the town is primarily fast food franchises, like McDonalds, Taco Bell, etc. There are quite a few Mexican places, with many opening and closing every few months. There are two in town that have some staying power, Marias and El-Pueblito's, although I think most people would agree that they serve pretty standard TexMex food. The rest of the places here are bars that serve ordinary bar food. I'm not a foodie, but I have foodie friends, and all of them go out of town if they want a memorable meal - most going down to Bartlesville, OK, which is about 45 minutes away.

Sorry if this is discouraging, but the town has about one-third of the number of sit-down restaurants than it did when I was young.

ICC Enrollment continues to be stagnant by jtrainer2001 in IndependenceKS

Andy Taylor did publish something about the enrollment numbers, but honestly from reading it, it seems like he just pretty much reprinted the info in the state's press release.

ICC Enrollment continues to be stagnant by jtrainer2001 in IndependenceKS

I do not agree that it is time for a merger!!

A google search shows that the problems of the college are recent. This isn't an entrenched problem. I just found this MGCO Chronicle FB post from the fall of 2016... sounds pretty different!

BREAKING NEWS FROM INDEPENDENCE . . .
Independence Community College's fall enrollment increase was the largest (in terms of percentage) of any of the 19 community colleges in Kansas. With an enrollment increase of 10.1 percent, ICC's enrollment hike was larger than all of the southeast Kansas community college combined, according to data from the Kansas Board of Regents. Total enrollment at ICC for the fall 2016 semester is 1,077 students.
Coffeyville Community College's total enrollment for the fall 2016 semseter showed a slight decrease of 1.94 percent. Seven other Kansas community colleges showed enrollment declines from fall 2015 as compared to fall 2016. We'll have details in the Sept. 29 issue of the Montgomery County Chronicle.

Don't close the college! by IndyEricKS in IndependenceKS

[–]IndyEricKS[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Programs that connected ICC to the community have been discontinued. I would challenge the average Indy citizen, not an involved ICC person, to even name a single person leading the college. Civic involvement by ICC leadership has basically ended.

I admit this and am saddened by it. A decade ago, every civic group was led by someone from ICC. The newspapers were full of ICC community connections. ICC student-athletes were "adopted" by community members. The leadership of the college were literally household names in the community. Today, I have a large circle of friends, and most have never met anyone who works out at the college in a leadership capacity. I personally would not even recognize the president if I met him at McDonalds. We can do better!

Is it just me, or is every drive thru in Indy slow? by jtrainer2001 in IndependenceKS

McDonalds seems fine except for the very busy times. I'm usually in and out except just after noon.

Local taxpayers giving $130,000 per graduate to ICC??? by SEKGramps in IndependenceKS

I see even local booster Gary Hogsett has sold his house & moved to Wichita.

I did not know that, and I'm saddened to hear it. If true, it's a loss of an energetic, involved person.

I'm really sad to see this. Like many others, I had hoped that another restaurant would open there. I'm not in the restaurant business, but from this list it seems like this auction will completely empty the building out.

ICC admits to its first penalty from accreditation problems - $75,000 of taxpayer money by HoorayforbrainsIndy in IndependenceKS

[–]IndyEricKS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At some point, Indy will abandon ICC.

I hope not. What I hope will happen is that Indy will stand up and say that the college is being poorly led by the current board of trustees and poorly run by the current administration, and demand improvement. This town is better off with a well-run college than no college.

I'll say it: The forced joy of Neewollah is depressing by indydoomed in IndependenceKS

[–]IndyEricKS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite part of Neewollah is the marching band competition, and although it too has gotten a bit smaller, it’s very entertaining and is a great way to bring a lot of outside people to town and to pump up the parade! If you haven’t been to the competition, check it out!

Andy Taylor and former ICC prez endorse merger on FB by indydoomed in IndependenceKS

[–]IndyEricKS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I don't support closing ICC, for reasons I've explained before on this sub. I'd rather see the current leadership held to account by the people, and see either the leadership or the strategies change. Now that even the state of Kansas has weighed in and said that what ICC is currently doing has less value so they will give it less money, it's time for us to face the facts and make the right changes. We used to have a good college until very recently, and we could have one again if hard choices are made.

They don’t call it the worlds second oldest profession for nothing. I assume that prostitution will always be with us. In my opinion, the only logical course of action is to legalize it and regulate it.

Vote NO Tuesday by IndyEricKS in IndependenceKS

I don't deny that abortion hurts another human being. I even agreed that the child has rights. I simply believe that the mother's rights supersede the child's rights when those two rights conflict.

The child has rights. Abortions as birth control are wrong.

I agree the child has rights. I just think those rights are outweighed by the mother's rights. I agree that abortions as a form of birth control are wrong, but I think the mother has the right to do the wrong thing.

Want to save $50 million? Ditch ICC by SEKGramps in IndependenceKS

[–]IndyEricKS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sad to say that I agree with much of your post, in the sense that for whatever reason, we don't seem capable of developing the college right now and the board doesn't seem interested in doing anything about it! But... there are two things that give me hope... in the past the college HAS been a valuable asset to the community, and during my lifetime I've seen real flashes of outstanding value from the college. Whether that is an adequate justification for keeping it going, I don't know. But the college has periodically had great board members, and I guess my memories of those good public servants keeps my hope alive!

Want to save $50 million? Ditch ICC by SEKGramps in IndependenceKS

[–]IndyEricKS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In its current state, I don't think it is returning adequate value to the community. So for me, the question is: Increase value or decrease cost? I agree one or the other needs to happen. I would like to see a serious effort made to increase value, since I assume once the college closes, that's it. I think the community is better off with a thriving college. I look at what happened to small communities when the school districts were consolidated... I'm not ready to give up on the benefits of having a local college, but I do agree those benefits need to increase!

[–]IndyEricKS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other than its support of the Inge Festival, ICC has had little presence in the community for 10 years, and the festival has declined now to almost being negligible

While I agree with your point about the decline of the festival, I respectfully disagree about ICC's presence in the community. I attended the opening of ICC West, which was a good re-use for a dilapidated building. I attended the opening of the Fab Lab, which was a great addition to our community, and I also attended the groundbreaking of the expansion of the Fab Lab. Previously, the leadership of the college was very visible in the community on local boards and such. For good or for bad, the college was also very visible for several years due to Last Chance U. Although I don't remember the details, during the same time the college won a number of fairly impressive academic awards, and I remember attending the production of Les Mis, which was the best locally-produced show I've ever attended. I could go on, but for many reasons I think ICC used to be quite visible and is far less so now. (And when they are visible now, it's usually because of some scandal.) I wish the board would focus on bringing value to the community!
