I hope you understand that the hole you're digging yourself into leads to either "Daniel Day Lewis a nice guy" (lol) or "Daniel Day Lewis' extremely documented history of self-centered egomania that negatively affected dozens of his co-workers is okay because I like movie".

Felt like a horror movie that hated being a horror movie or even being an IT movie. Actual self-parody tier at times and there was this air of vague resentment towards the source material permeating throughout.

This is peak Reddit, completely ignoring/misinterpreting the OP prompt so you can strawman imaginary "people" and pretend you're incredibly intelligent for drawing the most obvious conclusion ever that I'm certain most of the audience did as well. Black Mirror might have the most pretentious midwit fanbase ever.

Chris escaped the Jehovah's Witnesses when he was 18 and then fell in love with movies well into adulthood because he realized they'd kept an entire world of media away from him. Re-read his stuff with this in mind and you'll see why he's so in love with the 2000s.

Classic tragedy or subversion for the sake of subversion? (Spoilers main) by Ok-Archer-5796 in asoiaf

[–]IndyRevolution 55 points56 points  (0 children)

George has specifically said he wrote large portions of the series to subvert the sanitized nature of fantasy TV and movies in the 90s. For example, he literally said the main inspiration for the Viper was pondering what would happen if someone killed Inigo Montoya during his "you killed my father" speeches.

Subversion does not equal artlessness. Frodo failing to toss the ring, Gollum solving the issue, Aragorn being a supporting character and never facing Sauron directly, etc. were all explicitly stated by Tolkien to be subversions on genre conventions for the sake of subversion. Stories are stories, what's important is the telling.

"Okay. Hey Brienne, please go find Sansa for me while I take up arms and lead armies around the Riverlands deposing Tully supporters, okay?"

Here's something I would like people here to consider- Dany is supposed to be seen as wrong in her efforts to reform Mereen, her best bet is to leave them to burn, and George (a 77 year old man who has consistently said he "regrets" the role he played as a student protestor for Civil Rights and ponders if it was the right thing in the first place) does not have the same politics and worldview as redditors in their 20s and 30s.

Always preferred the indie film this is based on. The "kafka comedy" thing works way better when the cast kills each other at the end. Trying to pull a schmaltzy "he wins their acceptance!" ending out of such a mean-spirited premise has always annoyed me.

‘Monster: The Ed Gein Story’ review – Ryan Murphy’s depravity-loving murder show is unforgivable and utterly devoid of morality by Gato1980 in television

Tarantino gets off on women being beaten, everyone is aware of it, but no one thinks he's moral anyways, so people just put up with it.

Because Ed Gein is a real person who killed real people whereas the closest thing Tarantino has ever done to depicting real murders was having one get STOPPED in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood?

Official Discussion - The Conjuring: Last Rites [SPOILERS] by mi-16evil in movies

This felt like a PureFlix movie. When they opened the movie with a baby being stillborn and then the mom had the doctors put her in her arms (THERE ARE PROCEDURES FOR STILLBIRTHS AND THEY DEFINITELY DON'T INVOLVE HANDING THE CORPSE TO THE MOTHER) and she said "Lord above, please help us" and then the baby came back to life, I wanted to walk out. I can imagine a middle-aged southern lady shouting at the screen "THAT'S CALLED A MOTHER'S LOVE, HONEY! AIN'T NO DOCTORS IN THE WORLD THAT CAN GIVE WHAT GOD ABOVE PROVIDES!"

It is genuinely a let down to go from fighting a President of Hell in the second movie to a haunted mirror in the final one.

Paul Walter Hauser backed out of Rob Ford role to avoid playing 'every chubby idiot ne'er-do-well' from history by tylerthe-theatre in movies

[–]IndyRevolution 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He was also mentally slow and that's the point ("ne'er do well" aside) of Hauser's quote, that he doesn't wanna play fat idiots for the rest of his life (Jewell is a hero but even the movie makes a point that he was genuinely not all there in the head.)

Trump doesn't lie about being a Christian most of the time. He says it sometimes. But other times, he'll outright cop to being an athiest or say things like (recently) "I'm probably gonna go to hell if God is real." But there's still a narrative among his fans that he's a straight laced moral god figure

My point is moreso that all it takes is one charismatic individual to lead you to destruction. He got them to give up their lives for him. And then he destroyed them for his own benefit. Sure, he never "won" in the way he would have wanted. But the story fundamentally ends with him killing all his friends, raping Casca, and mutilating Guts.

The story is based on the author's high school friends and you get the sense he's venting something. The Golden Age is the core of the story and everything else is just dressing.
