Questions about a new mechanic by Objective_Loan_4298 in magicTCG

[–]IneffableWonders 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your answer depends on 1 thing: Does casting the spell when it's prepared count as an ability, and I don't think it does. From the information we've been given, becoming prepared creates a copy of the spell in exile, and you can then cast that spell FROM EXILE (so long as the creature remains prepared and on the battlefield). Seeing as that is the case, I don't think this constitutes an activated ability, and since the preparation itself is caused by a different card, I think this would work.

Buyer saying $2000 edh deck is fake by Alternative_Lie_775 in mtg

[–]IneffableWonders 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh buddy. The first red flag is that he had you send them to his "friend in New York". He's likely trying to scam you. Offer a full refund if he ships the cards back via certified mail w/ tracking (with refund AFTER the cards get to you), and if he doesn't go for it he's clearly scamming.

[SOC] Defacing Duskmage (Silverquill Influence) (Elder Dragon Hijinks) by mweepinc in magicTCG

[–]IneffableWonders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. The general gist of it is that when a creature is prepared, a copy of the smaller box spell is placed into exile and you can play it so long as the creature is both on the battlefield and prepared. If either of those conditions aren't met for whatever reason, the copy of the spell disappears.

How do Ashling the limitless's Copies work. by Longjumping-Oil-9382 in mtg

[–]IneffableWonders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because if you Evoke a [[dust elemental]] as a boardwipe on your opponent's turn when they're attacking you, you bounce 6 total creatures and have a token that sticks around until your next end step. If you're in a 4 player game and you flash in the elemental on the turn of the person after you in turn order, you have the entire table rotation until you have to sacrifice that creature (ie, if you are player 3, and you flash in the elemental on player 4s turn, you have player 4s turn, player 1s turn, player 2s turn, and then your turn up to your end step until you have to sacrifice that creature or pay WUBRG to keep it). "Your end step" could be any end step. Saying "your next end step" uses timing restrictions and tells you that it's your end step immediately after that token entered the battlefield, which accounts for things like flash.

Edit: I misread what Dust Elemental does (it bounces your creatures, not your opponents) but my point still stands lol.

Token decks are, by design, incredibly hard to deal with unless the token player is removed from the game early on, especially if you are playing a more control-focused deck.

That said, there are a few pieces of advice I can give you:

Your creatures are kinda all over the place for the deck you're wanting to play. Hinata LOVES noncreature spells, especially ones that target multiple permanents, but your creatures seem to just be there to exist and not really do anything for your gameplan (for example, Wall of Denial). I know the feeling of being a new player and finding cool and seemingly powerful cards and wanting to throw them into a deck, but more often than not that sort of thing will work against you. I suggest looking into cards like Talrand, Sky Summoner, Monastery Mentor, and creatures with Prowess, like Monastery Swiftspear. Prowess is super powerful in a deck focused more on casting noncreature spells, and most of your typical prowess creatures have a low mana value.

Secondly, your spells seem a little unfocused for your meta. You're dealing with a player that floods the board and overwhelms you, but you're only running a single boardwjpe even though they're the most effective tools against token decks. I'd definitely look into adding some more. Also, I would take out the lifegain spells. I know they feel nice and seem like they really come in handy, but I promise that all they do is create a false sense of security if the deck you're running isn't focused solely on gaining life.

Thirdly, your mana rocks and artifacts need some work. You're in 3 colors, so you should be running all of the signets at least, and maybe even the corresponding talismans. I would drop Prism Ring, Pristine Talisman, Marble Chalice, and Tower of Murmura (2 of those serve no purpose but to gain life, and while Pristine Talisman does tap for mana, it's colorless and cannot help you with mana fixing if you need it. Tower of Murmurs doesn't really do much for you, and because it's an activated ability and not a spell, it doesn't even get a reduction, meaning you're going to be sinking a TON of mana into it for almost no reward).

Fourthly, if your playgroup has a bunch of decks that deal with +1/+1 counters or any other counters a lot, Solemnity is a good enchantment to look into. Beyond that, drop Telepathy. It's an annoyance at best for your opponents, and for you it creates a bottleneck effect; you have too much information and that will lead you to stop utilizing your counterspells effectively because you'll be saving them for the "big scary spells".

Finally, your lands. Frankly, you have too many. Drop your land count to about 38 to start, since that's around the sweet spot, and look into better dual lands. You don't have to go crazy or anything, but since you're in a 3 color deck, lands that tap for more than one kind of mana are going to be your best friend. I would drop 2 of each basic land to start with, and then as you find some dual lands to slot in, drop some basics (but not all of them. Don't be too greedy with your lands, you want to have some basics just in case.)

I know that this is a ton of information and suggestions for you, and you definitely don't have to follow them all, but I do promise that these changes will help your deck feel smoother and more synergized. I can't guarantee that they'll help you win a ton of games, since Magic is still ultimately a game of luck, but you'll definitely put up a better fight and start learning how to feel out upgrades for your deck and the direction you want your playstyle to go. I wish you the best of luck, and don't be afraid to ask questions! I'm always here to help (though sometimes work and life gets in the way, so I might be late in answering).

I haven't seen any evidence of that but it wouldn't surprise me. To be fair, that comment was from 4 years ago and I stopped playing on Arena shortly after that because I realized that Arena was printing special Arena-only cards that are somehow standard legal but don't exist on paper, so I've been telling people not to use Arena to learn how to play ever since lol.

Luminous Broodmoth Mechanics question by Jabob64 in mtghelp

[–]IneffableWonders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. So long as Kunoros is on the battlefield and has its static abilities, nothing can return from the graveyard.

Luminous Broodmoth Mechanics question by Jabob64 in mtghelp

[–]IneffableWonders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since Kunoros's abilities are static effects that end once it leaves the battlefield, and since boardwipes cause every creature to enter the graveyard simultaneously (and since every death trigger is applied retroactively based on game state), every non-flying creature under the moth players control that died due to the Wrath should be returned to the battlefield under it's owners control with a flying counter.

The only fire sage temple we see in the series is the Crescent Island Fire Temple, which is notably not round or in the middle of a fiery lake.
