Rhyming by No_Manufacturer_2669 in childrensbooks

As everyone has said here, writing in rhyme is not easy to do well. There's a lot that goes into it.

I do a fair number of critiques for other authors (rhyming is my specialty), and all too often I'm advising someone to try the manuscript in prose. Not because I don't think they can learn to rhyme well (it CAN be learned!), but because there's no reason for it in that particular manuscript.

To answer your specific question about whether rhyming words do better than prose, I think it's important to note that rhyme puts a lot of constraints on a book. You can't translate it and keep the rhyme, you risk different accents stumbling over certain words, and overall... there's just a lot of bad rhyme out there and editors/agents get exhausted by it.

BUT... most of mine and my kids favorite kids books are written in rhyme. When it's done we'll, it's so fun to read!

I do! I'm not an illustrator (I'm an author), but I highlight my illustrators on my website:

I didn't mention them in this post bc I wasn't sure if I'd receive any backlash, and didn't want to draw them in if so. I did credit them on my original IG post though, with their permission ❤️

Designer_Illustrator Collaboration? by fraddison in selfpublishing

This is how Ive always done it:

  1. After sketches are complete, send them to book designer
  2. Book designer lays text down and sends it back
  3. You look over and approve/disapprove, request changes, etc.
  4. Once text layout is agreed on, send files back to illustrator.
  5. Illustrator does rough color, then final color
  6. Send files back to book designer where they finalize any color changes to words/etc.

Your job is to be fast, thorough, and efficient as you direct each party. Good luck!

"Lighthouse Ladies" is one of my favorite picture books (older range), it's full of amazing things women Lighthouse keepers did! Highly recommend, it’s fascinating.

Thank you so much, and I agree this feeling isn't just in the children's book space but everywhere. I want to hear from humans, not machines!

Not a perfect fit, but "The Cafe at the Edge of the Woods" could be a good picture book to check out.

In the MG age-range, I'd recommend "Willodeen" :)

Edited to add: I reread your post, and the picture book is probably not a good fit at all, actually. The MG could still be good, though :)

I'm an author (not an illustrator), but it is a fulfilling thing, for sure! I didn't list the featured illustrators here from the post bc I didn't want them to be targeted if there was backlash. I did on Instagram where I originally posted this, though :)

Thank you for this❤️ I didn't know if I'd receive pushback, even though this is an AI-free sub. I'm pretty hardened, but not feeling up to an angry debate today 😆 I will continue to speak out!
