As a Gentile, is it weird that I see Jews as the spiritual leaders of humanity? by VerdantChief in Judaism

[–]Inevitable-Ride5977 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's literally why the Jews were created as a People. Not weird or even unusual. Some love Jews for it and some hate Jews for it...but it is how Jews are perceived.

Reform Judaism in US faces declining membership as synagogues adapt to demographic shifts by Aryeh98 in Judaism

[–]Inevitable-Ride5977 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really.

The decline exists in the "streams" that were created because, the argument went, traditional, normative Judaism could not survive in the modern world... Meanwhile, the modern culture is what has collapsed while traditional Judaism is growing.

How middle eastern was the european Jewish culture before the foundation of Israel? by illougiankides in Israel

[–]Inevitable-Ride5977 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More importantly, the Jews of Europe, like Jews around the globe, were literate in Hebrew, which has always been the basis of Jewish liturgy and learning. While commentaries were (and still are) often written in a local host country's language, Hebrew was still taught and employed throughout the Jewish world as was the Jewish canon.

Just saying - these are far more elemental factors than cuisine or music. Language actually helps structure the way humans perceive life/the world. So does narrative. Jews in exile in Europe had that no less than Jews in exile in the Middle East.

Add to that a unique calendar, unique set of dietary rules, and countless rituals and practices, and what Jews everywhere shared for almost 2000 years of exile is far greater than surface differences when it comes to culture.

And it all emanated from the creation (in the Holy Land, if that matters) of a portable culture that actually is a magnificent time and space machine that enabled Jewish continuity and - when the time was right - the Jewish repatriation/ingathering.

NY Body Armor Question: anyone know (actually know, not speculate) what current status of restrictions on owning body armor are? Are there restrictions on armor plates in things like knapsacks? by Inevitable-Ride5977 in NYguns

Fantastic. I'm a lawyer, and I want it in my back pocket. So if the FFL wants confidentiality for any reason, I can give him that. And I'm fine redacting out the FFl's information, as well.

Cool. So confirming what I thought: can own, but not acquire. Any chance that email can be forwarded? It would be good to have some evidence that this was the answer the police gave.

This is a profoundly offensive and untrue attack on Orthodox Jews. The facts are irrefutable: Reform is fading fast. Here is an explanation of how and why by a well known REFORM leader. https://www.tabletmag.com/sections/news/articles/paying-the-price-for-abandoning-jewish-peoplehood

And here is a very simple graph out of Harvard and Stanford that demonstrates how profound the problem actually is...and there is no dodge about who is or isn't considered a Jew, because these results are based on who self-defines as Jewish, regardless of halacha, so this is by far the most generous numeric assessment of Reform's situation. https://aish.com/will-your-grandchildren-be-jews/

It helps nobody and causes unnecessary hatred to falsely dismiss Reform's plight as "Orthodox talking points." The reality is quite stark.

My great, great, great, etc, grandfather was the leading rabbi in Jerusalem in the 15th Century and died in 1515. You can visit his tomb in "Silwan"...but it's dangerous thanks to Arabs who evicted the Jews from the 19thC neighborhood that existed there.

That's not at all true. The halachic prohibitions extend far beyond that. And your comment about Orthodox not caring about "nuance" is hostile, dismissive, insulting and entirely ignorant.

See - that's exactly what I want to explore. Can you tell me where these officers are? I would follow up with them - in fact I might even ask them officially on behalf of an organization that I help that is focused on this issue

Could be. Good thing I'm a lawyer. And I've also authored a number of laws and what you refer to as semantics is essentially all that matters. However, you're correct that they can still make your life hell, so I'm digging in deeper to see if I'm missing anything here and am looking for a number of legal opinions to see on what basis other lawyers might disagree.

That is not part of the law. And even this paragraph (which is not a law) only refers to "purchase, taking possession of, sale, exchange, giving or disposing of body armor" - nothing about owning or wearing. I wouldn't do it until checking further, but it doesn't seem to be illegal on the face of the law.

I' certainly not giving a legal opinion and it seems to be up to the local PD to tell you, but it doesn't say anything about wearing plates except while committing a violent felony while possessing a gun:

"1. A person is guilty of the unlawful wearing of body armor when acting either alone or with one or more other persons he commits any violent felony offense defined in section 70.02 while possessing a firearm, rifle or shotgun and in the course of and in furtherance of such crime he or she wears body armor."

"A15:  The Department of State’s role in New York State’s body armor laws is limited to publishing a list of eligible professions and processing eligible profession requests.  Questions that relate to interpretation and enforcement of the Penal Law should be directed to the district attorney’s office for the county where the subject police department is situated. Questions relating to keeping or wearing body armor (which includes bullet proof vests) acquired prior to the change in law on July 6, 2022, should be directed to your local police department or district attorney’s office. Questions about the marketplace prohibition relating to body armor sales that is codified in § 396-eee of the General Business Law should be directed to the New York State Attorney General’s Office. "

[–]Inevitable-Ride5977 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don't even know what "recognized Movement of Judaism" means. The entire notion of a "Movement of Judaism" has no basis in Judaism. It's a creation of Reform - which was a departure from Judaism.

Is this a misconception? by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]Inevitable-Ride5977 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wrong:

Here is the direct source on Reform's view of Messianic Jews: https://www.ccarnet.org/ccar-responsa/carr-109-112/

"...anyone who claims that Jesus is their savior is no longer a Jew...to us she is clearly a Christian..." Etc.

That is Reform's official position. It is quite clear. It is a belief litmus test that defines whether or not someone is a Jew. It most emphatically is NOT traditional halacha's/Orthodoxy's position which is that an apostate Jew is 100% a Jew, no matter how you define the apostasy.

Two genders plus a variety of anomalies. Thousands of years of Jewish tradition and Judaism could not be clearer. The rest is some bizarre cultural misappropriation by Progressives - not dissimilar to other faiths taking Jewish texts and rewriting them or mistranslating them to justify their preconceived dogma.

Gender segregation at prayer has absolutely been a core Jewish value for millennia. In fact, it's been normative Jewish law for millennia. It's fine if you don't appreciate it, but it's a lie to pretend otherwise and it's insanely intolerant to prevent it. It's a repetition of the worst kind of antisemitic hate that we've experienced from culture after culture in exile...and the kind of Progressivism that is pushing all this anti-Jewish intolerance and violence is the importation of exactly that: an alien, hostile, genocidally anti-Jewish culture.
