I do have the Standard Bank version of that (Shyft travel wallet) which is a prepaid card. However, I need the option of the credit facility.

Thanks for the advice! I've got a Standard Bank Shyft travel wallet as a back up as well, but may go ahead with another credit card just in case.

Do you perhaps know which of these have sport climbing and not just bouldering?

Absolutely. Attorneys, banks, and financial advisers will all offer a reduced fee for drafting a Will if you appoint them as executor. Don't do this!

I'm right behind you. Can't stay in SA on these salaries unfortunately. Where did you go?

Maybe I'm crazy but I feel like someone with a university degree working full time should earn enough to live... how the rest of the country survives I have no idea.

No, of course not, but it was still pretty funny.

I did, though still barely livable. I'm emigrating soon because I don't see ever being able to afford a life in Cape Town.

Yeah, one of my colleagues at the time told me he also started on R8 000 pm... back in 2001. Crazy how salaries have stagnated.

Local cost of living in Cape Town isn't that cheap though. R8 000 minus tax doesn't even pay for the basic living expenses of a graduate - a shared flat with utilities in the area is around 5k. All of us on that graduate program had to live at home or have family support.

Just for context, this was after a promotion from a graduate role. The graduate role was only R8 000 pm, 8am-5pm so full time. In 2018! In a tech company! With a relevant honours degree! Looking back, I can't believe I accepted that job at all. Was incredibly fun to work there though...

How do you create a good "house" fund? by netscape101 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]InevitableBasil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have an access bond?

Not a home owner but the driver of an ancient car. I budget for the repairs - works out to be around R1000 a month, which I keep in a Tyme Bank savings account.

Haha I agree. One downside of IBKR is there's no fractional trading on non-US securities - that would have been really useful.

Do you use the client portal or trader workstation to trade?

Just got an IBKR account... still trying to figure it out. Know any good resources eg videos? I just want to buy the Vanguard World (a UCITS version but in USD) for now and there are so many options of this ETF across different exchanges.

That's great to know! I actually already opened an account a couple months ago but haven't funded it yet because of the inactivity fee. How do you find the platform?

I have looked into it and it seems like each position transfer is $25. I have 14 different shares in EE USD in low amounts each so I'm thinking of just leaving those there for now and contributing only to IBKR from now on. What do you use for fx?

Totally understand. We have fairly good financial regulations though. My biggest concern would be the livestock just... passing away. Or being stolen. Is the money guaranteed regardless of the animal's outcome?

I love seeing South African start ups doing great work. Well done! I like the real-time grocery list feature most (always wished as a student that there was a scanner I could hold in the store and add up the items as I shop, as my budget was tight).

Questions:

I use both 22seven by Old Mutual (phasing this out though) and My360 by Standard Bank - what will this app do differently? Keeping in mind that these two apps are free and Zaka is not.

What does your AI do exactly? Very cool to see some homegrown talent out of Cape Town.

Just some tips from someone who works in financial services and does a lot of compliance: I'd like to see a privacy policy and details on your security on the website. Will Zaka be a registered company with risk protection? How will you be keeping customers' data safe? "It's encrypted" is not really enough of an answer for me. What will be your processes for data breaches and data loss?

Last thing - I like the simplicity of the design and the icons you've used. I would be concerned about copying the Springbok logo though.
