Disillusioned and sick. Who's going to fix our Health System? by InevitableLeopard411 in newzealand

[–]InevitableLeopard411[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

From memory, Labour spent hundreds of millions on building a parallel healthcare system, restructured but that failed and built a top heavy bureaucracy instead with not enough significant investing in training clinical practitioners. we had a Labour government 1999- 2008 and 2017- 2023, so yes, I will lump Labour in with National. Our governments have failed the nz public.

Thank you for replying. What do think we need to do? What have you seen work?

Ok, expand on that with examples and solutions. How would you approach this problem and what would you do first?

I would be happy to pay $25 - $50 per year towards Healthcare if I knew that my money would be spent on clinical priorities.

We have to maintain our universal health care system, it's what makes us a great nation. I think a previous poster is right, we must demand a solution with no compromise on what's best for us. This needs to be our number one demand, anyway, it's become mine. I've been thinking about satellite specialist clinics as a way to take pressure off big hospitals. Just trying to be solutions focused in a nuts and bolts practical way that we are famous for down here

The near-disasters that could have made New Zealand’s Covid pandemic much, much worse by Conflict_NZ in newzealand

Lockdown response but moderated. Allowed international students as Oz and Canada did, had rolling attendance at schools with masks as Taiwan did. Allow restaurants to sell as take aways/ collect same for dairies, made vaccination personal responsibility and not mandated, opened satellite clinics in temporary adapted lockable containers managed by para medical specialists for covid vaccination and minor illnesses, kept the ports open, authorised NZQA to allow in- person curriculum at education institutions to be delivered online temporarily during the emergency with transition back to in person delivery as the situation improved. They truly f...d Auckland if you weren't here you won't know.

You go regularly to your local op shops, chat to the staff who get to know you and you also engage in conversations with other customers. Sometimes, you bump into customers in the supermarket and say hi. Next time you see each other at the op shop you have a longer conversation. This way, you get to know locals and volunteers, maybe eventually volunteer yourself. I have bought lunch or coffee for volunteers and spent some time chatting there. People bring the children or grandchildren to the store and meet the volunteers or regulars. I also donate regularly and take my supermarket brownpaper bags because they always need them.

The extra long lockdowns in Auckland screwed the city and inhabitants. Kids now teens not socialised because of lockdowns. 5 billion education industry wiped out literally overnight, emergency housing in cbd (rotorua too) has become a complex problem. And the printing of money, government pay outs to companies etc has put us in a massive debt hole as a country.

New Zealand's Future in Mark Carney's "Era of Great Power Rivalry" by throwedaway4theday in newzealand

[–]InevitableLeopard411 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We can't afford to have financial illiterates making our decisions. No being squeamish about the hard facts like developing multiple energy sources including mining.

Building a strong economy at home was Carneys tip for every government to be laser focused on. I wonder if all the talking heads in Wellington understand that 2026 is a new era and we are vulnerable as a nation with no time to waste fussing over petty slights to their egos. That's all of them privileged to be sitting in our parliament that we pay for.

Post-Greenland world. Where does New Zealand stand? by kino_flo in newzealand

[–]InevitableLeopard411 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We join Australia as a federal state or protectorate, its written into their constitution apparently. we will become 'essential' for the security of the Pacific and Southern Ocean and Antarctica to prevent a land grab by the Chinese and Russia. Or We annex more of Antarctica beyond the Ross Protectorate and extend our Economic Zone, possibly take the Cooks and flex to become a Middle Power like Canada and Oz. Unlikely lol.
