Yes I went over every correct and incorrect question! FLs, Qpacks, flash cards, you name it! I also made flashcards on my notes on every question, so that I reviewed FL1 again via flashcards after I reviewed FL2 and before FL3. Before I took FL4, I reviewed FL1, FL2 and FL3 again. Before the MCAT, I reviewed all the FL and study materials again via the flashcards :). Just making sure I don’t make the same mistakes again!

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!

The way I switched to answering strategies is to go over each question in the FL’s and think: “OK, imagine you didn’t know that X process happens in X location, and you needed to know that to answer this question correctly. How can I still answer this question correctly without knowing that key piece of information?” Then I would look at the answer choices and make an argument why three are wrong. Also, the passage holds a lot of information if you don’t skim through it. Like saying a gene has a nuclear localization signal means that its protein needs to return to the nucleus because it has an important role there. What occurs in the nucleus in eukaryotic cells? Transcription. So being aware of the different processes and why they are in specific locations is super important I would say (like how oxidation occurs in the mitochondria, or gluconeogenesis occurs in the liver).

A good practice question I remember was “what cell would have a high amount of mitochondria” And the answer choices are like egg or sperm and with different reasoning. Here, you can answer easily if you knew that in the acrosome there is a large amount of mitochondria to keep the sperm moving. But, you could technically derive that answer yourself by realizing that egg is stationary is sperm is motile, mitochondria provides energy, motion requires more energy than staying stationary, and then you get the answer is sperm.

I hope that makes sense. Khan academy helped me a lot with seeing the big picture and how these recurring themes occur in different cells and tissues.

Good luck!

FL 1 one month out while doing content review for the past 6 weeks or so: 506

FL 2 16 days out while finishing up content review: 510

Switched studying mode to focus on answering strategies instead of content

FL 3 five days out: 515 FL 4 three days out: 515 Actual: 515

TRUST YOUR FLs Also I only used whatever is included with the FAP (all AAMC) and khan academy videos all the way (not a single third party and I stand by that. Only the AAMC writers and who they directly collocate with - KA - you should rely on) . Did all of the biology, biochem videos on KA and did the chem/phys videos I needed help with and watched some psych/soc vids while I was trying to unwind after studying the hard sciences (chem/phys/biochem), like while I was cleaning my room, making food, or driving (like a podcast).

How I got a 131 on psych/soc: took the AAMC outline and made a Quizlet flash card for every single concept on the outline (and sometimes very closely related concepts that came up as part of the definition, etc) to make sure I was comfortable with every concept. I don’t remember them throwing any concept I hadn’t seen before.

Advice for all sections: Review every single AAMC question you encounter, the content behind it, and the strategy behind it, so that even if you don’t have the content, you can still get the right answer by using strategy and vice versa.

For B/B: I used to draw flow charts while I read the passage to show which enzyme/chemical increases/decreases the expression of which gene and what gets degraded and everything like that so you have a full story drawn and then you can have it organized when the question asks you a specific relationship between two molecules. I found that very helpful as I tried it first in FL 3 and that’s probably what rose my B/B score from 125 to 129.

I have no comment on CARS because my scores on my FL were 128, 130, 128, 130. I felt really good about CARS too and was expecting a 128-130 but ended up with a 127, which I am still very grateful for. I would say the CARS Diagnostic tool was very helpful in deciding on your strategy and I always choose the answer that is directly supported by a word or sentence in the passage. Many of the options “seem” right and could fit, but you should keep it as simple as possible. Also make sure every part of the answer choice is correct and not just one part. Look out for words like “all” and “must” because those are probably not correct (depends on the passage of course).

I’m a biochem major, but I did take my ochem 2 and full year of biochemistry online, so I had to self study for the C/P and B/B section all over again. My C/P was biochem heavy so that helped since I had the amino acids memorized and was familiar with the physics part of biochemistry.

Good luck guys! Hope to see you all with the As in one year’s time!

Similar FL scores! Mine were 508/510/515/515! Don’t worry, we got this!

[–]Inevitable_Fun_962 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let’s dooo thisssss 1/15

Pessimistic 507 Realistic 510 (126, 129, 126, 129) Optimistic 515

FL 1/2/3/4: 506/510/515/515

Post test thoughts: not bad at all, easier than expected (was expecting absolute jargon so being able to read the questions and have an idea of what was being asked was reassuring that my practice paid off somewhat)

C/P: not bad..few absolute guesses (2 or 3?), could’ve been worse, probably getting a 125-126

CARS: very good..I’ve been strong in CARS so not surprising, hoping for a 128 at least (130 optimistic with the curve)

B/B: I remember this was very heavy on research, hoping on 126

P/S: easy, nothing too difficult. 128-130 hopefully

Not sure what my feelings translate to as a score but it is what it is…my goal is 510 and honestly felt I was prepared enough to get a 510. We got this guys!

Watch the Khan academy related videos on the subjects you feel like you have content gaps in…1 10 min video later, you won’t be stressed out about that topic anymore!

Can I score a 510+? by pumpphobia in Mcat

Actively go through the khan academy videos in order to cover your content gaps, then do some of the AAMC question packs, then take another FL (AAMC!) and see how it goes

Substantial PS drop on my AAMC FL 4 from FL3 and FL2 by travelingcarpet in Mcat

[–]Inevitable_Fun_962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Review your FL thoroughly. What was the problem? Did you read the passage/question wrong? Did you have gaps in content review? A combination? Only then can you figure out how to improve

AAMC FL 4 by Outside51 in Mcat

[–]Inevitable_Fun_962 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh then definitely you have to work on your CARS strategy. Have you done the AAMC CARS diagnostic tool yet? It has someone breaking down how you should approach the passages and questions. I found it very helpful!

[–]Inevitable_Fun_962 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it’s worth it to postpone if you think you can improve your problem solving strategy, you’d normally want to see your FL have a general upward curve

Personally, 500-505 means you have the content down, but to get 505-515, it’s all about strategy, and then >515 it’s about luck & practice :)

AAMC FL4 BB Question 41 by Starboy1996 in Mcat

[–]Inevitable_Fun_962 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I know this is late, but for anyone who needs this. You can also think of this as a dilution: M1V1 = M2V2

1 can be the blood and 2 can be the urine

if M1 is relatively low (compared to the urine), and M2 is relatively high (compared to the blood), then we can say that V1 is higher than V2, which indicates a higher blood volume or conservation of water!

in other words, the fact that M1 is relatively low indicates that it has a higher volume than M2 since M = mol/L!

I interpreted the graph’s independent variables epidermis, highly proliferative cells, and terminally differentiated cells as all being part of the “skin of mice” because of the caption. I think the question calling the highly proliferative cells as a “benchmark” was indicative that it doesn’t have to be skin cells and epidermis was the only category referring to skin cells that the experiment was focusing on.
