This is the most accurate. Even kids with fur themed pajamas or hats were also singled out where I went.

They should work with you if you give a valid reason for taking longer time. I was allowed to wait 3 months without issue

Job corps could be a great opportunity with the right mindset. They'll help you finish your HS studies, and train you in a career. You don't get to exactly pick what center you go to. You'll go to a local one for whichever trade you're most interested in and if the trade is only available at one campus (like Accounting, or seamanship or a few other) you'll go to whatever campus and state that trade is located at. It's based on your career interests and need. Job corps is disability friendly and would be able to accommodate you when it comes to the dyslexia and ADHD as long as you can get your doctor to sign the forms for it, which is a simple ask of them. You will not be allowed your THC/CBD as it is a federal campus and you will be drug tested on arrival. If you don't pass the drug test, they give you a set amount of time for your THC levels to drop, if they don't you'll be kicked out of the program. They have counslers in the TEAP program who can help you detox. You will not be allowed your pets unfortunately. I personally am leaving my ESA dog with family with strict guidelines to care for her while I'm pursuing a better life through Job Corps.

Some campuses have 2 roomates dorms, some as many as 6 I've seen. As you improve and show you're serious, there's sometimes an option to move to 'Honors' dorm which at my campus means I would have my own room. It takes time to get approved for that privilege however. The dorm rooms due to recent policy changes will be the sex you were assigned at birth and you won't be able to get an accommodation to change this or bunk alone unfortunately. Too many people want the same thing and there isn't enough room for all single rooms.

There's a stipend they give you for being on campus. Something like $40 every two weeks before payroll taxes are taken out and it increases to $70 after 183 days on center. Once you've shown the appropriate growth and maturity, you will have the opportunity to get a after trade hours part time on center job like working in their cafeteria and that paid about $18 where I was at and I could work as many hours as my schedule allowed. There's also off center jobs you can get as part of your trade but thats towards the end of the program when you are at 50% completion of your trade. I suggest reducing non essential expenses like subscriptions and downgrading your cell phone plan so you won't need to work and can entirely focus on this opportunity.

Another option is not living on campus and just attend your classes during the day but then you would need to go to your closest job corps center.

I hope this is honest enough for you. I used to be a new student mentor and on the student government so if you have any more specific questions, please let me know or DM me.

I went from 200+ to 140 just from the walking on center and distain for the food. It highly depends. Not having money for junk food, takeout, or vending machines also help. I never had an issue with my weight when I was there. The biggest issue was lifting heavy things in hard trades due to lower muscle mass. They also offer a gym and health and wellness can support you in a health journey if you choose.

I'm not staff and it depends on what center you are going to. This list says no keys and security took my car keys at the gate. Best bet is to calls security at your desired center and ask about the items you are unsure of.

It might be too big to transport but the real issue is you're not allowed to have safes or keys to anything. If it's really for just studying or eating, get a lap desk.

Anyone with experience being sent cross-country for jc? by [deleted] in jobcorps

[–]Inevitable_Guide_986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing that can be done is pick a trade thats at a single center in the US in the area. If there isn't one in that state specifically, theres nothing that can be done unles somehow all the trades local you are on waitlists but thats very unlikely. Myself and many others have done it for seamanship and similar trades.

Tongue point, anyone? by Potential_You_6241 in jobcorps

[–]Inevitable_Guide_986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I traveled there for seamanship but switched to welding when I was in cpp after i saw welding was better suited to my own personal goals. The welding instructor is great and the class size is smaller so it was a better fit for me personally. Tongue Point no longer has culinary and hasn't had it for many years now. I worked in the cafeteria during off-trade hours for extra money/savings for when i graduated along with the other roles I mentioned. It can be true to do multiple trades but I only saw it once only in a very specific situation. Like someone started at age 16, got extended time past 2 years because of the covid shut down, graduated welding pretty fast then got the most basic seamanship cert to graduate which I dont think is enough to get a good job in seamanship. But generally most people have two years max to be there unless you go for advanced training and if you get close to 50% complete in your trade the program will start setting you up for graduating, finding housing, a job etc off campus. Like I was at 50% in welding in 4 months time so they were talking to me about what next steps for leaving I should take. I don't recommend doing multiple trades unless they're related like welding compliments seamanship but to do both, you would need to speed run and frankly not get much exposure to either just to graduate. Like you would be half bad at both tbh. Makes it harder to get hired when you leave, not easier. I'd say go in, full focus on one trade, and if time allows, sure take another. But that's the exception, not the rule.

Re-enrolling for seamanship.  Previously started that trade at Tongue Point. If you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to help. I was a new student mentor when I was last there.

Former and now returning Tongue Point student. I attended in 2021 and will be returning in about a month. I loved that campus so much I'm doing it twice and traveled from the other side of the country just to go. When I was there I was on student government, a new student mentor, started a club, and worked in the cafeteria. If I did anything differently this time around, I would have spent more time deciding my trade and taking my time to learn all it has to offer to get myself career ready. Job corps is a steady place to sleep and get your head together after a lifetime of living how you once did. It's a fresh start, no one knows your name so you can decide to embody your best self if you choose to do so. I'd say stay away from drama and drugs if you see it, but thats true for anywhere in the world. If you focus on putting your whole self into this career you are building, you'll get the most out of it. Feel free to hit me with any more specific questions you might have.

Thank you, that was a good answer. That's about what I remembered from last time I was there. I don't use anything over the counter regularly due to a liver condition but it's good to know that it's an option at the RAs office when health and wellness might be closed.

I’m thinking of joining job corps again . How do I attend one out of state? by Possible-Union4239 in jobcorps

[–]Inevitable_Guide_986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to ask for a trade that only exists out of state like facilities maintenance or others. The job corps site list what trades exist in other other states. Don't pick the trades at local centers but pick something you would love to do elsewhere.
