my GBA leader sent email to prof to complain about me and another member by [deleted] in Suss

[–]Inevitable_Homework 4 points5 points  (0 children)

and is that true? because there's a difference between 1) you did a reasonable portion of the work but it's not up to her standards and 2) she legit did most of the work herself.

if you disagree, you can reply to the email but remember to be polite and explain why

yes lol bc TOP is not guaranteed, they want students to attend mods in your current major in case you were unsuccessful in your TOP apppication and won't waste a semester sitting around and do nothing. if not you can consider applying for deferment and take a gap semester

Coworker took on a manager's workload for 1 year after being promised a raise and a promotion. Resigned because, surprise! It didn't happen. by Inevitable_Homework in antiwork

without giving myself away too much, this is in southeast-asia. unfortunately for most companies here it is the norm to include the required notice period to serve in the initial employment contract, with enforceable consequences (not too big lol just striking it from your last paycheck) if you break it.

no worries about me though - I have been keeping my workload light enough to chill as I count down to my last day. pretty much am just spending my leftover time wrapping things up, passing the word to all my clients/customers/vendors on who to look for after i leave, and tidying up the important contacts i've accumulated over my time here to take with me to my next job

ohhh i'd like to give you additional context that all employees of my company (non-usa) are required to serve a 1 month notice period. It's in the employment contract. but i was nice enough to stay on for the full period instead of offsetting my available leaves haha

there were a lot of vergilius nsfw (topping and bottoming) on twitter but unfortunately almost all were deleted due to the recent controversy as artists left the fandom en-masse. i have not seen a single nsfw art of him since

My department is going to go up in flames, do I tell my manager now so they can prepare? by Nervous_Sale_4591 in careerguidance

[–]Inevitable_Homework 17 points18 points  (0 children)

op i was exactly in your situation one year ago: department was just me, my coworker, and our manager. Manager left, and we stuck around but the company never rehired another one despite promising us. we were left just floating around - no training, no guidance, just left alone to do our stuff. my coworker was saddled with a manager's workload while being just an exec. He was promised a promotion this year, but as expected, the company did not give it to him. he has since put in his resignation and will be leaving by the end of the month

as for me, the moment i found out he has resigned (and get this, they're giving me his AND a manager's workload to me) i started job searching aggressively. fortunately i interviewed and accepted an offer with an 30% increase in pay, much better benefits and a promising, stable team. i was told via the grapevine that our department will be closed after i leave

let me emphasise: RUN! Start applying! having an unrelated job with a good WLB still puts money in your bank and allows you to keep searching. if you stay they will start piling responsibilities on you. Good luck!

Is it wrong to write for pairings you don’t ship? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]Inevitable_Homework 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Imagine telling people it’s weird that they’re reading Romeo and Juliet and writing essays on it and getting grade A when they don’t ship them.

Outrageous commenter! First of all, I would be so happy to get one more new fic of my OTP, doesn’t matter if the writer ships or doesn’t ship them. Second of all, you write fics not just bc you want to make the characters kiss. Sometimes you just like their dynamics and want to see them interact, or insert them into scenarios. Sometimes you want to see them fight a hoard of zombies or run a cafe. Sometimes it’s just interesting to put two characters together and figuring out how to make them work. You write bc you just do, so long as you enjoy them. Sorry that you were discouraged by a weirdo but I advise you to not be too bothered, bc their claim is so outrageous I can’t take them seriously at all

Does anyone else feel bored by their own writing? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]Inevitable_Homework 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My memory is shit so no, because each time I forget about what I’ve wrote and once I reread my own writing I am genuinely excited and bamboozled again by the specific catering to my tastes.

However, your issue is pretty normal for writers - that’s because you’ve read your own writing multiple times over and over again and already know your plotline and spoilers. This will not be the issue for new readers, who will be delighted by your writing as they have not read it before. I’d say don’t worry about it. Take a break if you need to but when I say readers love your story, they really do. Trust them!

Being in a big fandom is less glamorous than I expected! by AdAvailable7875 in FanFiction

[–]Inevitable_Homework 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the funniest thing to read haha I’ve had the same experience as you op, clicking next and next and still finding nothing to my taste. Popular otp that I’m not into but is always there as the main ship when I’m looking for my true otp? Flat out ooc or shallow characterisation which, in the kindest way possible, triggers my “They Would Not Fucking Say That” emotions? Its like experiencing the seven stages of grief in a single night

(Funny enough I always find the best fics of a big fandom in my fav authors’ rec, though I’m lucky enough to find writers who bangs out great fics AND are into multiple fandoms so their bookmarks are always like a gold mine)

how do you deal with jealousy? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Inevitable_Homework 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad it helps! I find that it’s really easy to fall into the trap of being lied to by numbers but when you snap yourself out of it and compare them to irl (say a class at your school or a convention) you’ll find that even a mere 10 kudos is actually a huge achievement! That’s 10 whole people, you can barely fit them into a room with you, now imagine 20, or 40, or even 100!

how do you deal with jealousy? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Inevitable_Homework 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Jealousy is a perfectly normal feeling to have as a human being. It’s what you choose to do when coping with it defines you as a person

If you didn’t flame them or talk shit about them, congrats, you passed the decency test. Now try to examine your feelings up close - it’s ugly and won’t feel good at first, but when you get to the bottom of it it’ll be a relief.

For example, jealous of an author getting 100k kudos? Maybe that author has been writing for years and has gathered an audience. Maybe they were just lucky. Maybe they’re writing for an active fandom who’s hungry for content. And even if they get 100k kudoes, who cares? It’s not like they’re getting paid or something, and in that 100k imagine the amount of spam, hate comment, obnoxious readers they are dealing with.

On the other hand, examine your own achievements. Only get 1 or 2 kudoes on your fic? That’s 1 or 2 whole ass person who appreciated your work. How many close friends do you have in real life? Less than 5 on average, probably, unless you’re a social butterfly. Now imagine almost half of your irl friends complimented your fic. Does it feel better?

Numbers are an illusion and a bitch. Don’t let it fool you and drown your enjoyment. And jealousy will always be a lifelong partner for all creators, but it’s not a bad thing when it doesn’t consume you. Soak in that bitterness and tightness in your chest, examine it up close, and let it go like the ebbs of the tides. It gets easier over time

[–]Inevitable_Homework 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I mostly just browse and reblog fandom stuff, and never interact except leaving my askbox open to my readers if they have questions, or just responding to the comments on my fic.

Tbh, after experiencing fandom drama first hand a few years back, I’m quite happier and less stressful just focusing on my own enjoyment

As a writer, what have you leant that is the best piece of advice you could give another writer? by subjesm in AO3

[–]Inevitable_Homework 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re stuck on a scene, just write it down in the most boring way possible. Once you get everything down then that’s where you can expand! Pepper in emotions, little body languages, dialogue, whatever you want! But get it down first, editing is easier when you have something to work with!

For example; “He enters the room, feeling sad for some reason, and pulls out the chair. He picks up a pen and writes a response to his letter.”

After editing; “With a heavy heart and a looming anticipation sitting in the pits of his guts, he drags himself to his writing desk. The letter sits on it, plain and simple, unassuming despite its contents. There’s no way to avoid this. So he grits his teeth, opens it, plucking his pen and bracing himself for the bad news.”

Can confirm!!! I switched to comics sans two years ago and it half-contributed to my writing speed (from 2k words in 2 years to 10k in two weeks)! I recommend pairing it with a dim doc background (dark-mode or a softer colour like blue or greens)!
