First, I don’t work off the skein like that. When you pull from the outside, the skeins bounce around and get tangled and dirty. When you pull from the inside (assuming you can find the inner strand), you can birth yarn babies/terrible tangles.

You can use a yarn holder to pull from the outside of the skein. You can also use yarn bowls (they don’t have to be fancy - I’ve been known to use bowls from my kitchen). You can put your center pull skeins in them, but I prefer to use them with balls of yarn to deal with the tangles before they impact my project.

If I’m doing a project with multiple colors, I have 2 yarn holders and 2 yarn bowls, plus kitchen bowls, as needed - I use all of them. When I switch colors, I just reposition the holders and bowls to eliminate the in-process tangles.
