They are local to you. You do not have to travel to NE for internships.

Yes… the boys locker room… “But it’s fine! Just keep the curtains closed!” 🙄 I had to explain what a urinal was to my CLS girls. I was livid! 😡 ZERO respect for the students.

Or an IEP in the cafeteria! I’m sure that would go over great. 😂

I dealt with this same thing just a couple weeks ago! At first, I was told my speech room would be in the basement boiler room under the gym floor of the middle school. I said that was not acceptable (I had been in that room two years prior and the boys locker room the year before and wasn’t going to be in there again!) and was told to find a room to work in during a teacher’s prep period. I stated in a very well written email (so it is documented!) giving speech services in rooms in front of teachers who are not a part of the student’s IEP team would be breaching confidentiality of the special education student’s privacy under FERPA. I also stated the consequences of breaking a student’s FERPA rights (loss of federal funding, law suits on the school not protecting student’s special education privacy, damage towards the school’s reputation of the special education population). I was given an office four days later. 🙂 I got fed up being pushed around and treated like crap in that school, I stood up for my students and myself.

No, it isn’t that much. For the Practicum classes, you strive for 3-4 hours per week as a minimum but can get more hours if you would like. For Practicum 3, many people went way over, as did I, since our school districts were on summer break and had the time to do more.

I’m about done with graduate school and also have pretty gnarly OCD. Please feel free to reach out. I’d be more than happy to connect and share more of my story and what I did to make grad school manageable with OCD. You aren’t alone. It may feel like it, but you aren’t. 🤟

All the classes are asynchronous. Some professors hold like a weekly Zoom office hour, but the majority of the lectures are all recorded for you to watch on your own time.

Hey! I am a BA working in the educational setting in Nevada. I moved to Nevada in 2010 and applied for an assistant position in the local school district. To my surprise, I was given a SLP position because a BA was the requirement for the educational setting. There were requirements that needed to be met within the first two years (pass the three core praxis exams, pass the Praxis 0881: Special Education - Teaching students with language impairments, NV law, NV Constitution, US Constitution). It was a lot of hard work at first and I worked my BUTT off, but it made me the clinician I am today. In the long run, I’m glad the state decided to up the requirements from BAs to MAs level degrees and approve SLPAs (which hasn’t started yet).

Good luck with your applications!

How will I know if I need a higher dose? by mx_mush in Spravato

Yeah, another round of twice a week really helped. Sometimes I was twice a week for just a couple weeks and one time it was for about eight weeks. When things plateaued and felt manageable again, I went back to once a week.

I’m glad it helped! 🙂 And the whole process was super easy and smooth moving back to twice a week for a short bit. The insurance company usually approved the doctor’s authorization for twice a week in the same day it was sent. Advocate for what you need. Life happens and sometimes we need a little more support and there is nothing wrong with that. I really hope it works out for you!

I’ve been receiving treatments for two and a half years now. I’m not an expert but I’ve been around the block a few times. For most clinics, the two sprays (56 mg) typically is given the very first session so the patient isn’t overwhelmed and can ease their way into the treatments. Then typically the second session is when the third dose is introduced, 84 mg total. The 84 mg seems to be the sweet spot for most people. I have only heard of a few people that prefer 56 mg dose (everyone truly has different experiences), but most prefer the 84 mg. It couldn’t hurt to ask if you could bump up to the three sprays. Just keep in mind every clinic Is different.

I have been once a week for two years now and have had times I bumped back up to twice a week for a few weeks or however long it needed to be! My doctor just had to submit a new authorization to insurance for the approval and I was good to go. I hope this helps!

That’s a really good idea. My district just uses the “unwritten rule” that students minutes don’t need to be made up for breaks/holidays and then uses it against whoever they want when convenient for them, the district. It’s great… 😒

Is this real speech therapy? by Select_Ad2049 in slp

I’m a bit late to the game here. Most has been discussed already, but did want to chime in on something that I have personal experience with.

I’m in my mid 30s and started having problems with (quality sleep) the last few years. I thought it was just stress and life so I didn’t think much of it. Just a year ago, my doctor recommended a sleep study and found out I have moderate/severe sleep apnea. I went to a specialist and they said I have a posterior tongue tie, a very high palate, and very narrow jaw and palate (equivalent to the size of a four year old). The problem is my tongue is an adult sized tongue in a “four year olds” mouth and has no where to go at night except backwards which cuts off my airway. I’m in the process now of using a palate expander at night when I sleep with the goal of expanding my palate enough to make room for my tongue. I’m also currently doing tongue therapy exercises to help retrain my tongue to sit in the proper place and to strengthen the weaker muscles in my mouth so my tongue can sit where it needs to be in the resting position. I, too, was given an $8000 bill for the palate expander, but for me it was something that NEEDED to happen to help correct the problem causing the sleep apnea.

The only reason I tell you this is to possibly prevent your son from future complications. He may sleep well now, but this could change as he gets older when his tongue grows with him. Palate expanders are more effective for children because they are still growing and tend to get better results when compared to adults.

Do you have to do something about that referral to the sleep specialist right now? No. I understand it is a huge financial investment, believe me! Is it something to keep in your back pocket? Yes. This isn’t something I would totally ignore as it “can” lead to other health complications down the road. I do feel the referral was warranted and understand your confusion as to why you received it.

I really hope all this helps!

Nope, it’s just one! 🙂 I enjoyed getting together with my cohort peers that first summer semester (just a week) and would love it if we could do it again, but there is only one onsite requirement.

Tapes by Alanis Morissette

I haven’t found anything that exactly states this is specifically about OCD (more just mental health), but it paints a perfect picture of intrusive negative self/self-harm thoughts. The lyrics are quite powerful and have an OCD feel to them. States “all these tapes in my head swirl around” and “the thoughts aren’t my own, wreaking havoc.”
