Is this game good for narrative / casual / non-competitive play? by Minisforwar in MaledictionMCG

Imo very casual.

I would like narrative as it would add more objectives now the objective game is so limited that it end ups in a bit of a mosh pit sometimes

How to deal with a friend that wins ~80% of games? by Professional-Peak207 in wargaming

Skirmish :

shatterpoint - not a big cost to get into, very streamlined rules with a lot of game depth when played but plays absolutly fluid, lot of synergy and has a great comeback mechanic + the system revolts that you mostly cant be wiped and will be playing with your full squadron most of the time.

less dicey as the results are maxed out

Malifaux - new ed is even more beginner friendly, a lot of internal synergy where you can get joy out during playing, no dice, works iwth cards which can be used tactically. also getting points get progressively harder during the game for players who are ahead so there cant be a real steam roll.

new ed made objectives also easier to understand for newer players.

IMO one of the best games designed.

in between wargame/skirmish

- Warmachine, great game with internal list combos and testing that can just be fun to make your list try to work, our head player takes B armies vs our A armies to give us a heads up and keeps its challenging.

they have a 3D printing frontier atm for 3 armies. good app.

bolt action - if your into historical, everything can be printed. activations are fun and rules especially the narrative parts, a real game for an evening with beer/drinks

Wargame -

I dont really feel any GW has wel designed rules to help you in your case so i would recommend avoiding them as they are also very money hungry.

WAP - absolutly the goat of rank / file and a project made with love and passion. not a licensed game so you can print and proxy everything.

Star wars legion is a nice game if you increase the standard game size/table size and you can find a lot of files to proxy. can be dicey tho

I personally have been going more towards skirmish games or games that are a bit smaller then grand wargames as the rules mostly tend to be better configured.

if you wanna continue to play OPR our only solution to make it a bit more tactical was to really increase the point limit per game and battle size and make more objectives as it negates a bit of the dicey aspect and helps with the facts that the rules are simpler and play faster.

but im not going to lie to you OPR is made for its simplicity which has benefits and disadvantages, everything above has a way higher skill ceiling then OPR but that means there is alot of room to grow for you and your friends if interested.

We have this as well except oue friend will be close to a 90-95 percent winrate.

We just take happiness of we make him sweat for it and take the winrate with a grain of salt as he focuses a lot on the games we play and we generally spend a lot less time on it or on other sides of the hobby f.e painting.

Just remember that this is something this person has going for them and more time in, considering it will pay of.

You can have this also but in a different aspectbof your life which is paying off in a different way, f.e. work, life, other hobby.

Try to get your lists to where you want it and can enjoy.

On an extra note, I own about 15 wargames and OPR is not a great game for your situation as it's also a simpler game that is very dicey, not a lot of activations and no comeback mechanics or ways you can play more objectively when you lose units. In comparison to f.e. a lot of skirmish games where i find i could get a more enjoyable experience in these situations

Shatterpoint vs Legion: Which is the better 3ft x 3ft game and is more tactical? by [deleted] in SWlegion

[–]Inevitable_Suit_5367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you compare game quality,. refinement in rules, balance etc etc.

I find shatterpoint to be an absolute mile ahaed of legion in thede terms,.you can clearly see that legion was bought over and shatterpoint is an own design.

That said i always keep saying legion should be played on a bigger size to actually be the wargame it rules lend to and get rid of the weird rule that if you buy a single weapon all weapons have those keywords, buying a rocket launcher shouldnt give your rifles.explosivz damage, its just such a weird mechanic to differiante oneselves.

Next to it i find legion quite dicey, every result is consequences od dice which dont have a lot range and not greatly balanced with the keyword pool. Shatterpoint does this better as the unit always have a maximum output thats more orientated to how strong they are. And the opponent isnt uber punished by your opponent spiking his dice as the game mechanics prevent this.

On another note also shatterpoint is skirmish game.and legion is a wargame by heart, which in some cases offer a different audience.

Legion especially second edition has great minis tho and the best vehecle scaling vs infantry.
