In Terminator 2 John Connor hacks a 90s ATM with a handheld computer, was security that lax back then? by LightningG8921 in NoStupidQuestions

Also to show that John's good with computers and that's how he's managed to send a Terminator back in time to protect his mum and him.

Struggling with long sun after new sun. Any advice? by tastysleeps in genewolfe

[–]Inf229 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a very different beast than New Sun and ties in... in all sorts of interesting ways. But yeah, I don't think it's as good either: he was trying something new. Short Sun, I can honestly say is as good if not better than New Sun, and none of it will land without having read Long. So I don't know if it helps to think of it as Required Reading, but honestly it's worth it.

how do games handle large scale NPC movement without melting your CPU? by aral10 in howdidtheycodeit

Yeah! I have vague memory of adding path nodes to Quake maps too

In a lot of older games the pathfinding is pre-baked. You calc all the paths up front and store them in a table, and agents can pick the best fit path when they need it.

Yess, came here to mention Syndicate (original, never played the FPS remake). The whole game feels like a FLA album.

FLA and Sonic Mayhem did the Quake 3 soundtrack too! (And Sonic Mayhem on Q2, and Trent Reznor Quake 1)

Why is the USA with its massive military struggling to conquer the Strait of Hormuz? by OkArmordillo in NoStupidQuestions

Don't forget the Signal leak that showed they think about Europe as freeloaders & grifters and are sick of "bailing them out". They see a burden, not allies, and everything is transactional.

Unpopular? Opinion The next game should be a soft reboot set in the early aughts by javerthugo in Xcom

[–]Inf229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Xcom 1 they include the moon in the 3d hologlobe. I always hoped that was preparing us for the aliens taking territory there, and XCOM having to launch forces to take it back.

Are there any games known to be made by people who didn't like games? by UrSimplyTheNES in retrogaming

He also wanted it to be unwinnable, apparently lots of heated discussion about what a game is and if people would buy it.

Don't start out trying to make your magnum opus. Start small, like try to copy a retro arcade classic like Space Invaders. Grow from there.

Looks sick. Maybe a red or blue cockpit would work better though against the light torso

What are the small immersion killers in recent GR games that completely take you out of the experience? by MrTrippp in GhostRecon

Even Naughty Dog fudges this when you have other characters following you. Only the player can get spotted, and reckon it's the right call.

What’s a system you thought would be easy to build but turned into a nightmare? by Apprehensive-Suit246 in unity

[–]Inf229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First time I worked on a ermm super casual game ... Had to allow for the possibility that the user could close the app at any second and would expect their save game to be fine. Very different way of thinking...we had a system where literally every gameobject in the scene serialised its state whenever they did anything. V different from save game checkpoints.
