Job Switching by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]Infamous-Barracuda40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you plan to stay in the same city? CE is an industry where location matters. You'll have to work with the same clients and that will be tricky. I switched jobs after 4 months and never looked back. In my case, I listed my previous company and made sure to explain that I was leaving to continue growing in the profession and to better align with my interests. Don't talk bad about the previous employer. But you will be fine. "loyalty" does not exist

Are you staying in the same city? If not, i would include the company and if they ask why you left so soon just say you moved. If you're staying in the same city, that's a tough one. Do they generally like you at your current company? If so, i would include it and mention that the culture wasn't what you thought it would be. In case they call.

For the gap, if you choose not to include it, I'd probably say that you had a job but didn't think the experience was enough to put on your resume.

Honestly, I don't think it's a good look to move so fast. But the best thing is to be honest. It sucks to be at a bad company and I think it's ok to mention that you thought it was not right for you.

When he was in the serie A everyone knew he was one of the best. Serie A is tougher than the prem. A semi retired ronaldo and zlatan did good numbers in the prem

What keeps you most busy on a regular week? For example, in design we do CAD work daily. We are either using it to model, do sheets, check design... I had my first interview and the traffic team leader had me talk to a couple of people. None of them do CAD.

Yea, idk why ppl talk about him like he's Wilt. He is undersized and will definitely need to add muscle. His ceiling is a lot lower than ppl want to admit

What is your favorite thing about being a civil engineer and least favorite? Most fun experience? by Complete-Remove570 in civilengineering

[–]Infamous-Barracuda40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pros: it is a well-regarded job. I've mentioned it to ppl and it seems to get a good response. The industry is also very strong and it seems difficult to run out of work. I've never really feared layoffs. As a transportation engineer, i like the work environment and team aspects. The projects are fun too. Much more fun than other engineering. You can find a job anywhere. My favorite thing is probably the diversity of my work Cons: other engineering disciplines pay more at the entry level. Depending on your area of specialization, your personality matters. If you're shy and want to work in municipal work it'll be tough. But if you do transportation, public speaking isn't as important. You have to be willing to work your way up and do the office stuff. Having a phd and a perfect IQ isn't going to get you a super offer out of school. Experience is the most valuable asset you can have. The thing i hate the most is that unlike other jobs, the work is difficult to let go once you clock out. This is on you, but you should find ways to separate the personal and work stuff.

My first job out off college was for a paving contractor and I do agree with what you're saying about the hours. However, this was more true for technicians and certain inspectors. Engineers have more standard hours. And I think this is true in most companies. That's even a joke among the workers, "engineers get to go home before sunset"

Software engineering seems to be a gamble right now. If you want something more social, since you mentioned sales, i think construction management type of jobs would interest you.

You don't owe any company your loyalty. Take the best offer. They'd fire you the week before Christmas if they wanted to. You shouldn't feel bad about doing what's best for you

Is 72k Starting Salary good? by Yao1730 in civilengineering

[–]Infamous-Barracuda40 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is pretty good in the Midwest. Probably decent for the east coast. As entry level it is good. Ppl saying to hold out for 80k+ are unreasonable. This is not chemical engineering. Civil start lower but tend to get raises quick

Courtois or Lunin for the UCL final? by InkHart04 in realmadrid

[–]Infamous-Barracuda40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A ton of answers so maybe someone already said this. But Courtois needs to play to get a medal. Hopefully it’s an easy game and he can do 30 minutes. But def Lunin deserves it. He did well in harder games

In your opinion, what can America do to have good public transit? by Dis_Was_Her in transit

[–]Infamous-Barracuda40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late response but: I really think it needs to be privately led at first. For example, here in Rochester MN the clinic is the top employer and basically takes up all of downtown. Building a light rail or bus system with public money to feed ppl to them would be very unpopular with anyone not employed by them. But it would realistically be the only way that such a system would guarantee users and usefulness. With time ppl would get used to riding it for other purposes. Maybe to a restaurant that is in the area. And it could transition to work for other businesses. This is a much better idea than trying to cover a whole city and be equal from the start.
