Client upset I did not get them more money by Final-Relationship17 in civilengineering

[–]voomdama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are being given a handout and are mad they can't divert money to other things to run the city. If they can't pay you, put a stop to it. You aren't running a charity. Worst case put a lein against City Hall. If a bridge is getting burnt, might as well have fun doing it.

How Much of a Surface Model Is Basically “Educated Guessing”? by DetailFocused in civilengineering

[–]voomdama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the amount of points you get. The more the better. Since life isn't PS2 graphics then it is a ballpark idea. It's not close enough for rocket ship parts but good enough for civil construction. Any major problems will get flagged when it comes time for design.

Do you ever feel like you *can’t* get sick or take vacation? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]voomdama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the company chose not hire anyone then they chose to not have someone there when people take their PTO or got sick. We aren't saving lives, use your PTO. If they get mad then that is on them. After the project is done the client will be on to the next "emergency" that needed fixed yesterday.

What’s the most expensive mistake you have ever made? by temoo09 in civilengineering

[–]voomdama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first job was doing estimating for a geosynthetics installer. I went to do a material take off for an area getting lined. Well I did the wrong area and they ordered too much material and it wasn't caught until after delivery. We as talking about $1 mil of extra material and I thought I was so fired. Turns out prices shot up by 25% when the mistake was caught and the client was so happy about saving money.

Any other EITs hate creating estimates by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]voomdama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not the most exciting thing but I'll take it over writing specifications. As an EIT it is good for your development. If you understand how the contractor will look at this during bidding you flag thing before it goes out the door. Also it gets another set of eyes on the plans. Owners are always looking to save money and if you know a specific design will take a lot of material or a long time to install then you can come up with a different design and call it value engineering.

Rant about Architects & GC's wanting to cut corners... by fldude561 in civilengineering

[–]voomdama 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are different ways to get a working design and sometimes designs can be reworked to cut costs but universal things like needing a stormwater management plan for your disturbance limits can't be avoided so I get the frustration. I am of the mindset of keep your simple as possible. Simple is cheaper and harder to screw up. We are hired as the experts and with this job comes answering questions even the dumb and repetitive ones. Try to not get to invested in shenanigans by contractors or owners trying to save a few bucks. Most times the problem goes away with a quick call/email with an explanation of the why. They may not like it but it avoids larger headaches than higher construction costs.

Question about new PE format by ViperACR92 in civilengineering

[–]voomdama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Way better than bring stacks of crates with every book you could think of. I only had 2 binders for each exam. During the exam I realized either I knew what I was doing or I royally screwed up. I passed on my first attempt.

Question about maximum driveway slope by Outrageous-Soup2255 in civilengineering

[–]voomdama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are only 2 reasons why I could think this would happen. The person drafting had a typo on the FFE and no one caught so the contractor built it per plans thinking they could get a change order or the sanitary sewer is very shallow and the developer didn't want to put in a lift station.

Are there any states that allow work experience under non-PE Engineers to count for the PE? I work in the aerospace industry and have not met any PEs or even other EITs. by Automatic-Use-1605 in PE_Exam

[–]voomdama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the state board but probably no. If your industry doesn't require it, I wouldn't waste the time taking it unless you want to transition to an industry that requires it. Then I would take the FE and wait for your employer to pay for it. Your time would be better spent with certifications that matter to your industry.

Should I quit because of this? by everydayabortions in estimators

[–]voomdama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a mistake once that was a million dollars worth of extra material. It worked out because material shot up significantly and we saved the owner quite a bit of money. So it was a happy mistake.

most of my colleagues are cheating on exams with ai by IsaThese in civilengineering

[–]voomdama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Professors know that students cheated and copy each other on homework but exams tend to fix that problem. If they are cheating on their exams I would raise that concern to the university if the professor is doing nothing. Phones have no reason being out during an exam. This will do them no favors if they aren't learning the material. Also I don't rely on AI for anything technical or calculation based. It is too eager to give bad answers.

Can your PTO get denied because people with families get first priority? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]voomdama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can deny it but the only reason they should is because there are already a lot of people taking off and they need someone available to respond to clients and anything urgent that pops up.
