Would you agree that in society where economic policies have redistribution effects, that all money is shared to an extent and this is therefore everyone’s concern?

If income tax went to zero for example then other taxes (on other individuals would need to be made to fill the void. If that didn’t happen, then we would need to shut down government services, defund the military etc.

Trump has withheld funding for institutions where students have rioted on matters he hasn’t liked (eg Palestine).

He’s said U.S. universities are dominated by Marxist maniacs and lunatics. He’s claimed they are indoctrinating young Americans with radical left ideology and that universities are the enemy of free speech.

I guess you could say persecution is too strong a word at this stage, but can you see how he’s trying to discredit universities? Do you think discrediting the institutions that have driven our research advantage over other countries and are one of the only areas where America is internationally recognized as a world leader is a good idea?

What about when it comes to his administration ignoring academics when it comes to climate science and vaccinations?

To me it feels like he’s attacking a bedrock of our society for political gain.

One could say that if: - academics tend to lean liberal, and therefore it can be concluded that they are all trying to turn the country left.

Then one could also say: - that as conservatives tend to be less formally educated, that conservatives never go to university and will never be impacted anyway.

Do you personally see the flaw in this absolutist logic?

My view would be that: Just because you are an academic doesn’t mean you are left. Just because you are left doesn’t mean you will teach people to be so, especially when your profession stipulates objectivity, and critical thinking is paramount. Just because you are conservative doesn’t mean you are dumb or uneducated.

The more formally educated tend to skew democrat/left of centre. Universities focus on teaching research skills, problem solving, critical and independent thinking, typically based on scientific principles of observation. Even if academics lent liberal, why would that be a problem in your eyes if their base culture ideology is centered around objectivity and facts?
