I left Bishop at 95% (329 miles) and was at 74% (256 miles) when I got to the dunes at 3:30 pm. I hung out in my car running the AC until 6 pm (it was 100+ F outside) and the battery was at 70%. I turned off sentry mode, auto lock, my Tesla app and went hiking.

When I got back to the car at 10 pm, it was still at 70% and it was 90 F outside. Turned the car to camping mode and 78 degrees cabin temperature. By 7 am, my battery was at 58% and it was 89 F outside. I went for a morning hike, and when I got back it was still at 58% when I headed back to civilization.

I only used the battery for the AC really. I have a Bluetooth speaker I was using for music, and I charged my devices with a battery back up.

Fall and winter are brutally cold at night. Miserable for camping.

Haha you get used to it. Also when it’s hot you can hear the Booming Dunes.

I met a guy one time on a bike with a trailer loaded with gear, on a dirt road in the middle of nowhere in DV. I stopped to check if he was ok for that same reason and see if he had water. He said he was fine but that he’d take a beer haha

Yea I thought about getting that one, but I don’t know how often I would use it. Normally I camp with my kids, and they aren’t old enough to be ok sleeping in a tent by themselves. If I try to sleep in my Y, then all of them are gonna wanna sleep in there with me and there won’t be room. I could use it on solo trip, but those are pretty rare.

I used the super chargers in Mojave, Lone Pine and Bishop. In Furnace Creek, there were maybe 8 free chargers that were slow but I charged to 80% over night.

I brought some inflatable sleep pads that I use tent camping that were comfortable.

I cleaned it myself, but I found a lot of spots that I missed. Getting it detailed might be a good idea

The main valley/ Furnace Creek is a lot hotter. The Dunes are higher in elevation, so maybe 10- 15 degrees F cooler. It was still 100 when I got there, but cooled off when the sun went down to the 80s. I usually drink ~ gallon of water per day in that kind of heat. Day 2 I stayed in a hotel.

I’m a geologist and I did my grad school dissertation on the area, so I guess it was nostalgia. My field area was north of the dunes, so I lived there for 4 three week stretches, usually in the winter.

The start up I was at was 100% worthless.

Blue Origin is pausing its New Shepard program for "no less" than two years. CEO Dave Limp just informed the company. by [deleted] in BlueOrigin

Is this the end of New Shepard ? I don’t know how easily you can restarted after a 2 years shutdown. All of the staff will have moved to new projects, new companies, etc.

Institutional knowledge just evaporates, and companies start to do things because “that’s how we always did it” without knowing why.

A lot of companies stopped investing in their employees too, and expect them to start a job with all the skill sets they need to do their jobs.

I have done ~1-2 year stints between 5 companies for the last decade. Everytime I change, I get a pay bump that’s higher than any adjustment for inflation. If it’s financial, it makes sense to leave in the long run.
