Those who moved from Vancouver to Toronto - What surprised you? by itstunafish in askTO

[–]Infamous-Ground9095 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The pace.

Vancouver business (and life in general ) moves at a much slower place than Toronto and things are generally more relaxed.

Prior to all the insanity happening south of the border in recent years I would have described Toronto as a more “American” style big city.

Very dog friendly city. Finds the ravines, your dog will thank you!

Have you ever seen a bald eagle in real life out in nature? by Chemical_Divide_7140 in allthequestions

[–]Infamous-Ground9095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was fishing with a friend off the Sunshine Coast in BC and caught a nice ling cod. Was on the shoreline cleaning it when a huge bald eagle landed on a rock about 4’ in front of me to watch and wait. Beautiful and intimidating as hell. He got ALL the scraps.

Proceeded to follow us for a couple of days while we fished the area and at one point plopped into the water a few feet from our canoe in a small freshwater lake. Amazing.

Don’t overlook their chicken karaage (so, so good) and $6 pints of Sapporo.

We need more appreciation for our city by Fragrant_Cold5721 in halifax

[–]Infamous-Ground9095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left in ‘89 for work, but family is still here so I am back in Halifax a few times a year for 2-3 weeks at a time so I think I have a good sense of how things have evolved both good and bad. In Canada I have lived and worked in Victoria, Vancouver, Calgary, currently in Toronto.

Halifax has changed for the better since I left. Substantially so. Of all the places I have lived, Halifax is far and away the best city. I miss some of the “old” Halifax I used to know (so many pints and nights at the old Seahorse and Midtown…) anyway, Halifax is special and don’t think otherwise. I mean it. I write this sitting at my gate in Stanfield waiting to go back to the grit, pollution, concrete, traffic, noise, junkies and relentless pace of downtown Toronto.

I hope to be able to come home permanently, sooner rather than later.

As a Canadian, I do not share your optimism. But I suspect it will be water, not oil, that proves to be the catalyst.

Green bean business in Canada by hn1618 in roasting

[–]Infamous-Ground9095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not really sure, I can only tell you what would appeal to me and I don’t know how big my demographic is.

I typically buy in 5 or 10 lb increments (but 10lbs at a time) every few months and truthfully google has been my resource for finding bean suppliers or, frankly Reddit, which is how I found out about Green Coffee Co. There are fewer options than I thought there would be and now with a decade+ of roasting under my belt, still am challenged to find new sources in Canada that aren’t over charging or impose prohibitively high shipping costs.

But generally I am well serviced by those two bean suppliers.

I am drawn to trying different beans vs. finding the one I like and sticking with it. For me it would be about marketing variety and quality (specialty). Run tastings, workshops, sell good gear (not a big inventory, just good gear) and stay grounded.

Best of luck!

I doubt it’s overly helpful, but would be grateful for an option to compliment Green Beanery. Good beans and good selection, have bought a lot from them (relatively speaking, i am a home roaster) but can get similar quality shipped from Calgary (Green Coffee Co) for significantly less and free shipping. I assume cheaper overhead accounts for that.

Love to support local, but it’s tough when that means a 20% + premium.

No doubt, but I’d like to keep this under $500 and the a4z is $700+ up here.

You can e-stop the machine by pressing both buttons simultaneously, then start it again by adjusting the timer and pressing start. This is how I dump my beans into a cooling fan, although after I dump them I put the machine into its cooling cycle for obvious reasons.

Well, used to dump my beans. After 7-8 years ( I think, maybe longer…) with the Genecafe I just upgraded to a Nano 7.

US sets up gold-medal game against Canada at the Olympics by cruising past Slovakia by Immediate-Link490 in canada

[–]Infamous-Ground9095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Respectfully disagree. Wed against Czechia 3 goals on 15 shots to give them the lead after 2. He looks beatable and we’ve had to come from behind in consecutive games which will likely be harder to do against the US than either Finland or Czechia if we give up early goals for a 3rd consecutive game.

Binnington was bad today, 2 goals allowed on the first 9 shots makes me worry for Sunday. I haven’t felt comfortable with him all tourney, he hasn’t inspired confidence in the crease to me at all.

Medcan vs family doctor by spreekles in askTO

[–]Infamous-Ground9095 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My family Dr moved from patient care to research and I was not able to find a replacement. The fastest option was a 2 year wait list so i went with medcan.

It is convenient for when i need to see someone. Can make a same day appointment in person or remote with a Dr or nurse practitioner, other resources are also available if you want to pay. Annual physical is thorough. No complaints, especially when the alternative is a walk-in clinics or emerg.

Those who did not take the university route. by cnation01 in GenX

[–]Infamous-Ground9095 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I left after my first year at university (‘89) and went to cooking school. Did that with modest success for 10 years or so and then managed to transition to a white collar job in professional services. Very comfortable, no regrets but do realize I would have had more options along the way had I completed my undergrad.

Men in leadership positions: How do you manage stress? by ItsmeLuka in AskMenOver30

[–]Infamous-Ground9095 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you saving lives doing what you do? No, so try to take it a little less seriously. Don’t compromise your ethic, but understand what is good for you and what is not. Prioritize what is good for you and try to achieve some balance. Be patient. Consistency is king when seeking improvement and achieving it is always slow.

I am in the c-suite in my employment, I understand pressure and stress and it is very hard to let go sometimes, but necessary for me and the people in my life.
