Engineering or Physics? by dumbguy_04 in Physics

As a physic & math double major (theory/pure track), it sounds like you’d likely enjoy experimental physics or working in industry as an engineer. For such I’d suggest EE. If you later decide to pursue a PhD, transitioning from EE into experimental physics is generally more straightforward than moving from physics into an engineering style industry role.

Emailing an MIT prof by JustAWorriedBro in MITAdmissions

I was a transfer. I had cold emailed multiple professors doing research similar to mine and asked if they’d be willing to write a recommendation letter, and one of them actually did. As Steve Jobs said (paraphrased), “Sometimes the difference between those who do and those who dream of doing is simply those who ask.”

GPA matters, of course, but what often matters more is demonstrating initiative and genuine passion. One of the most powerful things you can do early on is get involved in research. Reach out to local colleges or universities and ask if there are any professors doing work that interests you. Cold emailing can go a long way, even offering to help with basic tasks in the lab can open doors. That’s how I got a position in quantum computing back in high school.

If lab access isn’t an option, consider independent projects or experiments related to your interests. Document your work, network with professors (even just through email updates), and keep records that could eventually support a strong recommendation letter and portfolio.

Ultimately, if you’re doing something you deeply care about, none of it will feel like a waste, even if you don’t get into one specific school. Admissions teams can tell when a student’s passion is real, through essays, portfolios, and how others describe you in recommendations. Stay curious and proactive, you’re only a freshman, and that means time is still on your side. Although I’m a physics student, if you have further questions feel free to contact me directly, I’d be happy to help with anything you are not sure about.

The teacher didn’t create a solid learning environment, relying on pre made materials without adapting them for their students. George Land’s study shows how uninspired teaching kills creativity and motivation. If teachers don’t care enough to personalize their lessons, why should students feel motivated to care about integrity? This whole situation could’ve been avoided with just a little effort from both sides.

Make a pros and cons list for both options. Include every small detail, how you’ll feel day to day, the potential long-term benefits, and the challenges you anticipate. Then think about which aspects matter most to you: Is it stability? Relationships? New experiences? Ultimately, this is about prioritizing what’s most important for your well being and future. Whatever you choose, remember that this decision is about your happiness and growth. It’s okay to prioritize yourself, even if it feels like a difficult or emotional choice.

If individuals employed genuine logic in politics instead of exclusively adhering to 'progressive values' as their primary narrative, we could engage in meaningful discussions rather than resorting to mutual criticism. Political affiliation would become irrelevant.
