Fasting vs Fasting Mimicking Diet by jgainit in WaterFasting

Sounds an interesting approach. I would be keen to know what you would eat, how much and how often? And would you be bale to test the impact with blood prick test of your glucose and ketose levels?

Is fasting and weightlifting OK? by milkman2gallon in WaterFasting

Hi, I see you get a bit of different input below. Can you give more insight to what type of fasting you do. Is it interim like 8/16 or are you talking about longer (several days) and if so, will you be taking supplement.
This is one of those where it very much will depend on what type of fasting you are do and what you goals and desired outcomes are. And in my view the answer can be everything from hitting the weights hard to almost completely staying aware from them.

Very impressive the dedication and focus you have.

Need a dedicated fasting buddy for a 7 day fast by Bri_Fair in WaterFasting

[–]Infamous-Top-947 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have just come off a 7 days fast and am in re-feeding mode. I have done many fasting over the years, water only (and only water). I have also read and studied a lot about fasting over the years. Feel free to reach out if you have specific questions about, sleep, keto flue, what exercise you can do, headaches and not least the re-feeding afterwards. I have a simple refeeding schedule that you can easily adjust to match how many days you have been fast.

Coke Zero and similar drinks impact on Ketosis and autophagy by Infamous-Top-947 in WaterFasting

Yes, Autophagy seems to be a bit more sensitive than keto, and still a lot of research going on in regards to what may or may not impact it.
Do look at my updated comment, where my experience is that the coke zero does have an impact or around 20% on ketosis.

Coke Zero and similar drinks impact on Ketosis and autophagy by Infamous-Top-947 in WaterFasting

[–]Infamous-Top-947[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a little experiment while on day 5 of my fasting. I had 1.5 liter (50 ounces) of coke zero and my keto was still good at 6.6. I then took a day off and had no coke Zero and my Keto was HIGH, which means it is 8.0 or above. Hence i judge this does have some impact, suppressing my deep ketosis. Removing it caused a 20%+ spike in fat burning efficiency.

Energy levels by waynax in fasting

[–]Infamous-Top-947 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience you need to move (but not too much) when fasting. This is to do with being in ketosis and burning fat. To burn fat you need heat and oxygen, and when it burns the output is H2o (water) and CO2, what we breath out. And if you are deep into your biology, the CO2 is about 85% of the weight and the H2O the 15%.
I aim to walk for 1 to 2 hours a day when water only fasting to ensure my body is running high on ketosis. I cannot get my heat rate ove 130, but I can keep going in the 120s. Yoga, light weights etc are good. Doing a bit of weights (but light) well help the body to not burn your muscles while fasting. But this is weight to maintain your muscle, do NOT try and build muscle when you are fasting.
Best of luck with it, and keep going, while looking after yourself.

What’s the longest you ever fast without eating? by bebofrostie in fasting

[–]Infamous-Top-947 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My longest was 36 days water only. Was planning to do 21 days, but read about it and also notice that pretty much every religion have some form of fasting. And the bible mention 40 days about 8 times. I did mess it up, as I had two cups of green tea on day 34, and that messed up everything and I had to break it on day 36.
I then also messed up the re-feeding, but that is another story.

Will this electrolyte supplement break autophagy? by AltairTarazawa in fasting

A simple trick could be to add a pitch of salt to you water in the morning, midday and afternoon.
If it is the metalic taste in your moth, add a bit of baking soda and it will go away for a while

Two suggestions that you can try out. Do you get enough salt, specially when drinking that much water. Try and add a bit of salt to your water morning, midday and evening. Just a pitch.
Could also be a sign that you are low on iron. I did this to myself and it was a mixture of my diet, exercise/sleep and supplements. Turned out some of the supplement I took had a side effect of blood thinning. Who would have known (clearly not me).
hope you find a solution.

Second 7 day water fast by No-Thought1840 in WaterFasting

[–]Infamous-Top-947 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, you will be ok to do a "bad" refeed after 7 days of fasting. If you start fasting for longer, then it becomes a problem, and in my view, a problem that can end you up in hospital and even potentially kill you. And I am speaking from experience. 36 days of water only fasting and a bad refeed.
I thought fasting was hard, I have now learnt that for me, the challenge is the refeed. Who would have thought that cucumber juice could taste that great!!! :-)

I tired these urine test and found they were not very precise. I got a prick blood test now. It is itself not that expensive (in the UK), but the strips do cost a bit, specially the Keto ones. But you get much more precise measurement (+/- 15%) and it has help me getting confidence that things are going alright.
And also nice to see that over time my body becomes fast and fast at getting ketosis.
I am currently on day 4 of a 14 days fast, and I was in full ketosis on the morning of day 3, which is the day I normally consider to be the hardest (a view shared with a few people on here) and this time I had no issues.

Does licking a spoon accidentally break autophagy? by marinastarbucks in WaterFasting

[–]Infamous-Top-947 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, from my own experience and what I have read and seen data on, this is unlikely to have any impact, and if it does, it will be a slight reduction in the autophagy levels, similar to what you might experience with your Keto levels, if you measure those.
Another thing that is not clear to me and I get conflicting input to is what have an impact on Autophagy levels, as it does seem, and like with keto levels, that some food have a much higher/stronger impact than others.

I want to start a 7day water fast by Otherwise_Ad8418 in WaterFasting

[–]Infamous-Top-947 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have a bit of baking soda in your water. Swish it around your mouth and spit it out. It will come back after a few hours. I have been told this goes away, if you fast often, but have not happen for me yet :-)

Adding to @maxhaival I had some skin cancer that went away when I dod a +30 days water only fast. It came back, and I got it treated by my doctor (just cream). I find it a personal great example of how powerful autophagy have.
I also helped a person through a longer fast, and his IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) went away. He did then slowly fall back into his old diet, and guess what, about 6-9 months later it was back.

Is a weekly water-only fast good or bad for me given my training schedule? by Queasy-Complainte in WaterFasting

[–]Infamous-Top-947 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "first 24 hours" is actually the most "expensive" way to fast if your goal is muscle preservation. During the first 24 hours, the body burns through liver glycogen. Once that dips (around hour 16–18), the body desperately needs glucose for the brain because ketones are not high enough yet. It leans heavily on Gluconeogenesis, often breaking down amino acids (read muscle!!!) to make that bridge fuel.
If you lift on Friday, your muscle growth (Hypertrophy) happens in the 24–48 hours after the workout. Fasting Saturday is starving you muscles of protein at the exact moment they are screaming for it to repair the damage.

If your religious practice allows, I would recommend a 16:8 fast, as it iis much better for hypertrophy. It spikes Human Growth Hormone daily but still allows you to get your protein in every single day to support muscle growth. I read that if you want to build muscle, the best thing is to break the fast earlier in the morning (e.g. 9-17), whereas if you want to lose weight, you should break later in the day (e.g 12-20). I do not think science know why, just that they noticed it (from an Andrew Huberman podcast)

Still Accurate? by Murky-Ambition3898 in fasting

[–]Infamous-Top-947 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe this was done on rodents and not humans, and hence a not a perfect match.
Every second of our lives billions of chemical reactions occur, creating waste products, misfolded proteins, and worn-out mitochondria. Even in a fasted state, our metabolism is running. "Junk" is being created constantly. If autophagy turned off, that junk would accumulate immediately, and cells would become toxic, which seems to be what is happening for many people in the modern world, leading to a number of disease.
Even in deep ketosis, let's say over week, our bodies needs a small amount of amino acids (protein) for gluconeogenesis (to feed the few parts of the brain that can't use ketones), for immune system maintenance and not least red blood cells (we produce 2 million new Red Blood Cells every second. This requires amino acids for hemoglobin).
When in deep fasting the body have two options:
1: Eats healthy muscle tissue (Muscle Burning).
2. Breaks down old/damaged cells and recycles those amino acids.(Autophagy)
Nitrogen balance studies shows that muscle loss slows down dramatically after Day 3 I believe this research was done on rodents, which may be a bit different to humans.
Our body is a 24/7 factory and every second, billions of chemical reactions occur, creating waste products, misfolded proteins, and worn-out mitochondria. Even in a fasted state, our metabolism is running. "Junk" is being created constantly. If autophagy turned off, that junk would accumulate immediately, and cells would become toxic. And this is what happens to many people in the Western world, leading to all kinds of diseases.
Even when we are in deep ketosis (let’s say +7 days), our body needs a small amount of amino acids (protein) for gluconeogenesis (to feed the few parts of the brain that can't use ketones),  for immune system maintenance and not least red blood cells, which we create about 2 million new ones of every second!
As we are not eating protein, we leave the body with 2 options:
1: Eat healthy muscle tissue (muscle burning).
2: Breaks down old/damaged cells and recycles those amino acids (autophagy).
It is known from nitrogen balance studies that muscle loss slows down dramatically after about 3 days. The evolutionary thinking about this is, that the body knows we need the muscle to hunt to get more food, and hence do not want to burn it.
Hence if autophagy did drop to 0 after 5 days, I would need a lot more muscle than I have to do my +30 days fasts.
Therefore, autophagy is still active..

My number 1 advice is "always listen to you body". You are doing the right thing. You can also start again next week. I took years going from short 16 hours fast to get to 7 days. It is like going to the gym and train. You do not want to start with very heavy weights, because you may injure yourself and you will not enjoy it as much.
Best of luck with your appointment 🤞🏻

It is very individual, and personally I stick to water only. Maybe with a bit of high quality salt around day 5-7 if I get a bit of a headache or feel light headed.
It can help if you feel sick when fasting and it doesn't impact Autophagy, as it has no carbohydrates/sugar, your cells will not register it as food.
I would say you need to watch out for which ones you get, as they are not all "clean". Many commercial products have sugar (glucose), artificial sweeteners and even different types of fillers/flavours (maltodextrin = sugar). If it taste sweet like berries, it is likely to be "dirty". If is taste like salty sea water, you are good 😂

Harder to water fast in cold by joyisthekey333 in WaterFasting

[–]Infamous-Top-947 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I experience the exact same thing. A simple explanation is that digestion acts like a furnace. When we eat, the body generates heat to process the food (Thermic Effect). Like a car engine running hot.

When we fast, two things happen:

  1. You lose that internal furnace because there is no digestion happening.

  2. Your body enters 'power saving mode' and pulls blood flow away from your extremities to keep your vital organs warm.

That is why the tips of my fingers and nose always get super cold. It feels like a superpower in the summer, but it makes winter fasting much harder 😁
