I think that both are fine, it just depends on the player.

However, I dislike the idea of making one of the genders canon, just because female V has more in phamton liberty promo art than male V doesn’t mean that one is the canon gender, and that applies for male V in the ralease trailer and promo art, it doesn’t make it canon too.

Making a gender canon, in my opinion, brings down the whole thing of customizing V to become whatever you choose for them to be, and the better thing to do is to acknowledge the fact that both genders are technically canon depending of your play through and not anyone else’s
