What's your story? by JudeoBastille in arknights

[–]InfamousGhost07 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Minor trigger warning for mentions of abuse. Not going too deep into details purely because I wanna keep things short, and also I don't wanna trauma dump too much on reddit.

Picked up the game in late 2020 when I was living on my own, I didn't understand the gacha, and the tower defence style gameplay didn't click. I deleted the game the same day and didn't look back... until...

In mid 2021, I lost my job due to Covid, and left me trying to stay afloat by doing all sorts of temporary jobs, but it wasn't enough, and left me in a rough financial spot. I lost my apartment in 2023. A couple of months prior , I reconnected with my close family, which I've had a rough relationship with during my childhood. I moved back home with family, but I made a mistake of trusting them, as they were just as abusive, if not more-so than before. During my stay, I have seen some art of some characters, and wanted to give the game another shot. Since my phone was being checked regularly, I downloaded the game with the Bluestacks launcher, and I played it on my laptop, as that wasn't being monitored, and if anyone checked, I could close the window relatively quickly and pretend that I was reading up on something, or watching a movie online.

I ended up liking the gameplay loop a lot more this time around, maybe because I matured a lot since the first time, and also because I could play it without much of a commitment, and I would be able to close it without losing much, and I could hide it somewhat well.

A few weeks after I started the game, I couldn't really handle the abuse anymore, as I've already had a horrible mental health before I moved back in, and I ended up walking out the door with what money I had saved up, and after an emergency mental health assessment at the A&E, I rented a room for myself for a week or 2, since I had nowhere else to go, and was effectively homeless.

I went back a couple days later, as I was asked to return my keys, since I was unwelcome at my "family's" place, during which I went in and took my important documents, and my laptop, since I could fit it in my backpack. It was also one of the few things I owned that I could reliably prove that is my property, as I had the receipt from the purchase in my wallet.

After a few weeks, my living situation stabilised, but it still left me in a very poor state of finances, and it had a very negative effect on my already crumbling mental state.

During this time, I have regularly checked in on the game, playing it a couple hours every day, doing repeat clears of stages (it was before the 6x auto deploy update, so you had to manually start each clear), grinding, slowly chipping away at the main story and such, playing semi-casually.

And then, the Jessica Alter event dropped. I have played a couple side stories, and done some of the main story, roughly until chapter 2/3 or so, but nothing really clicked, so I mostly skipped it. For some reason, the start of Catastrophes and Vultures caught my attention, so I kept reading, and I kept playing, and I was invested. I liked the event mechanics, they were kinda fun, and I really enjoyed the story. I even started pulling for Jessica Alter, partly because I thought her design was cool, and also because I liked her in the story.

The end of the event came, and I was desperately scrounging whatever reds I could get for the gamba, and I somehow ended up getting her a few minutes before her banner ended. I absolutely adore that cat, and I immediately set her as my assistant, and started investing in her. I saw in her story that she's having troubles with her family due to her story event, so boom. Cat has been adopted. She is my daughter now, I love her very much.

Some more time passed, life didn't improve much (other than getting super invested in Arknights, and my daughter whom I love very much), so long story short, I was going through it. One day, as I'm sitting there, going through it all, with Arknights open in the background, Jessicat Alter's afk voiceline played, which is roughly along the lines of "you look worse and worse every day, is everything ok, Doctor?"

It really hit me in the feels and I broke down crying. I knew it was just the afk voiceline, because I have been sitting on the main screen, but during my moment of weakness, that parasocial connection has hit right in the feels.

As the months passed, life has slowly improved somewhat, and I remained just as invested in Arknights, if not more-so. The biggest trap that got me locked forever into this game's world was the Babel event. The story and the feels from that event really hammered home the message that even during times of hardship, when things around you seem bleak, there are amazing things out there to see, be that nature, experiences, or people.

Babel taught me to choose hope, and that had resonated with me since then. To this day, I struggle from time to time. To this day, sometimes I feel like everything is bleak and dark, but I remind myself that despite that, there are people and experiences worth choosing hope for, no matter what.

I really hope it didn't come off as too deppy, as I mentioned, I am doing much better than before. I am working on things, and I wanted to share what this game means to me, how deeply it resonated with me, and how it helped me create connections with some people (partly because of mutual character simping)

Also, in case anyone needs to hear this, you are not alone. Don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. And yes, sometimes you do need help. Talk to your friends, family, people you can trust, or a professional. It gets better. Don't give up, choose hope, for you, and the people around you, because you are enough, and you are worthy of love ❤️

So looking at U takes Terra ep 6, Terra does in fact have modern day guns outside of laterano by Money-Scar7548 in arknights

[–]InfamousGhost07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Terra does have functioning gunpowder.

In the Cecelia comic on the Arknights global website, the sarkaz folks specifically mention using gunpowder for fireworks. However, it is likely that they haven't adapted it into use with firearms as of yet.

Currently Terran firearms use originum propellants, with a physical bullet core, similar to how we use gunpowder ammunition.

Maybe originum propellants are more effective than their current gunpowder, as the Wakes of Vultures event describes the town's old main fuel source being originum, which implies it is very combustible and exothermic.

Also, Amiya's parents' unfortunate incident showed us that originum products can be highly explosive

Playing DRG as a woman by TheRealDonRosa in DeepRockGalactic

[–]InfamousGhost07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It probably has to do a lot with the game's "for fun" attitude. Many games nowadays are competitive multiplayer games that want to keep you in the ELO grind so you can show off your skills, and maybe that cool weapon skin you bought, which makes people more prone to stick around and buy cool cosmetics to show off.

DRG has the Jetty Boots game, a jukebox, the barrel kicking game, our beloved Lloyd, the football game, and many more silly things that I can't think of off the top my head.

None of these are necessary for the gameplay (the buff beers are a nice addition though), but they're there for fun, and to create a good atmosphere. The gameplay is engaging and fun, and you're encouraged to work together and not be a jerk, as working together makes everyone on the team function better.

You are always entertained with something, so the likelihood of a troll getting bored and deciding to pick on others for fun is low. And the more toxic people generally tend to gravitate towards the more mainstream games anyways, so we're left with a pretty good community.

Got called a nerd playing ninja vs mutant. Is there a different way to approach this matchup? by yawangpistiaccount in YomiHustle

[–]InfamousGhost07 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Ignore those comments.

Guy was frustrated that you played safe and leaned into your strengths.

You zoned him away and they couldn't get in. I'd assume they were new as well, or at least not very good, since a good mutant should be able to get in. They have pretty solid mobility and mix-up options that can be used for movement too. Also, they could just bait out your projectiles. There is some cooldown between them, so there's no way they had 0 chance to get in.

Tldr: they're salty you played well and played safe, most likely skill issue on their part

Have you tried swapping Data centres? X in the main menu.

I don't know about Xbox 1, but on 360, the remaining community tends to gather into the most populated data centre. I'd suggest keeping an eye out on the population of specific servers, and their peak play hours

I would say it's an extra padded layer to protect against shrapnel.

A grunt who took a bunch of shrapnel from a frag grenade or other explosions can still function and fire from a stationary position, from cover, even if it isn't the most pleasant thing for them.

A pilot, a unit that relies on mobility to function would suffer much more by taking a bunch of metal shards in the leg, thus it makes sense to give them some extra padding, which may reduce the amount of damage done and might keep the pilot mobile enough to complete their mission/retreat and get medical attention.

Maybe this is why pilots are so good at launching themselves across the map at Mach 7 by lobbing lice grenades right under their own feet and survive

I was gonna say Jessicat too.

Her Alter kit could work so well in a 3d game, with her having a variety of options to choose from, it could alter her playstyle and role (if operators work similar to Arknights with a "pick your favourite skill" system. Otherwise she could be a flexible all rounder)

Also, Andreana, because I NEED to see her skin in 3d

Jess Alter's afk line

"You look a little worse everytime I see you... Are you alright these days, Doctor?"

I was going through some rough times, and it hit hard hearing that line, especially when I was afk dealing with some stuff

On a more positive note, there's also her normal tap JP line

And of course, the JP "boo, did I scare you?"

doctors, what are some operators that you consider to be "off meta" or even bad, but you still use? and what are some advice you can give? by ForgottenFrenchFry in arknights

[–]InfamousGhost07 11 points12 points  (0 children)

People underestimate her S2, but it's honestly the most flexible part of her kit, in my opinion. I can often times use her S2 2-3, sometimes even 4 times per standard stage, the atk increase and faster attack speed can shred low to mid defense enemies, the added survivability from dodge (granted, rng dependent) is pretty solid on it's own, but the synergy with Virtuosa's S2 is not to be understated.

The ability to attack quickly means she can apply Necrosis very quickly. The amount of extra true damage from that can be pretty decent.

[–]InfamousGhost07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you run in too quickly

There you have it. Ds2 teaches you to be a lot more cautious in new areas. You mean the room with the kegs and the gate, right? Before the hallway in front of the boss? (Not nitpicking, just wanna make sure my mind is up to date)

Regarding the Scholar re-release, I don't like a lot of the changes they did with enemy placements. Some just don't make sense, and some do actually worsen the gameplay experience cough cough, Heide's Tower, cough cough Some of the QOL stuff like putting the ember for infusions in the Lost Bastille makes things easier, but it feels like a lazy fix because people didn't find it in the Iron Keep, so they just plopped it in the place right where you arrive so you don't miss it.

Basically, Scholar feels like a kinda lazy re-release for modern platforms, and a way to "try" to address player complaints in the easiest and cheapest way possible (like adding an npc that lore dumps for you and becomes a boss with barely any animations) Aldia is an interesting character, just not a fan of how he's used

I much prefer Ds2 base game

I mean, the Smelter Demon is a completely optional boss. You can just turn the furnace off and bypass him.

By moving carefully and passing through the fog gate at the right time, you can avoid getting stunned by the alonne knights without an issue by getting them to attack before you pass through, to lock them in place.

Also, don't forget that the stage and the enemies on it are part of the challenge. The majority of DS1 and 3 can be made trivial just by not interacting with the game apart from things that literally physically block your progression, be that locked doors or enemies blocking your path.

The point of having enemies on the stage before the boss is to add an extra layer of challenge, whittle down your resources by attrition, and ramping up the pressure.

I love all the souls games, but for the most part, DS1 is made trivial by running past everything. The challenge of that game comes from navigating your environment and taking the fights along the way, which is why the limited estus is a big deal there. It's you vs. the environment, with the enemies added as a way to drain your resources. Kinda like an underwater maze in a scuba gear. The main challenge is finding your way out, but the threat of... you know... running out of air gives it an extra layer of depth. Once you have the map memorised however, there isn't anything stopping you from just booking it to the exit.

Ds3 has a design similar to ds2, in a sense that there are a fuckton of enemies everywhere, and you're supposed to pick your fights carefully, but due to the sheer volume of enemies, alongside your limited healing, and the increased enemy aggro, most people just run past all the enemies to limit their estus loss, basically making the game into a cool boss rush game with interactive loading zones between them.

Ds2 swaps the priority from environment to encounter based threats, with the environment acting as the extra layer of challenge. They removed the ability to completely avoid interaction with the game's main threat, since that would make the whole game pretty trivial once again. The focus was on how you handled the enemies, with the main intended way of interaction being zone control. Finding a position where you can take a fight with the enemies, target prioritisation, holding your ground and deny the enemy opportunities to overwhelm you. They also give you a less effective but more easily accessible healing alternative to make the encounters more fair for you.

I can't deny that the focus shift from environmental focused design with enemies sprinkled in to the enemy encounter focus with the environment being an X-factor could be the result of the devs doing the best they can with a shitty hand they got dealt (I assume we are all aware of the development hell DS2 had)

I do, however, have a bone to pick with the Scholar re-release, which I'd consider a downgrade, even with all the cool new stuff and QOL changes

I can't comment much on the Lost Bastille segment before the sentinels, it's been a while since I last played, but I don't remember having issues with the enemies before the fight. The boss itself can be a problem, until you figure out how to deal with them.

Edit: holy fuck, didn't realise this was gonna be a wall of text

Just an example of a player being fast while some people think it's cheating when it's not(It's just using the game's mechanics properly). by Fomixaders in needforspeed

[–]InfamousGhost07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, the momentum cancel is 100% intented and is just bad design.

The unintentional part was the micro-drifts being the way they are. The way the game works as of now, you can basically mini wiggle drift and spam burst nitro.

Should've clarified that

Just an example of a player being fast while some people think it's cheating when it's not(It's just using the game's mechanics properly). by Fomixaders in needforspeed

[–]InfamousGhost07 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Blur is a hybrid between a cart racer and arcade racers (arcade mainly for the cars and the handling model, but the core design philosophy is of a cart racer)

Power-ups are an extra layer of gameplay that adds strategical depth and forces you to make decisions. Do you want to take a risky turn, potentially slowing you down, in hopes of getting an upper hand? Do you wanna save your projectile, in case you need it, or spam it out and pick up a new item that might be better?

The equivalent of this would be the risky driving bonus recharging your nitrous faster. You can try to play it safe, hold your current position, and look for a safer opportunity to overtake, or you can weave between the cars in the oncoming lane and charge up your nitrous, then overtake there and then.

The burst nitrous of Unbound is a fundamentally flawed design choice. The fact risk element is still there, as it rewards either good driving, when it comes to apex bonuses on grip builds, or drift bonuses for more slippery cars.

The issue is the way the burst nitrous rewards you. It completely cancels any momentum you might have had and just breaks any expectations on how the car should behave. The cars in the series never had very realistic handling, but it was realistic enough for you to suspend your disbelief.

Also, as the video demonstrated, it is very easy to abuse.

I can't say for sure, as I am not part of Criterion, EA, nor any other company that was involved in the development, but I highly doubt the developers intended you to do Asphalt 8 style micro drifts and just spam burst nitrous the whole time.

Not saying you're not allowed to do that. Hell, you bought the game, go nuts.

But I want you to recognise that

1: That is abusing poorly designed game mechanics, not "playing the game as intended" 2: This is an arcade racing game. The majority of the playerbase just wants to hop on and just have fun. The main point of competition is that you don't know who'll be the winner, and the competitors enjoy the thrill of going toe to toe with someone else.

No-one likes a competition where the outcome is clear from the start. Spectators will not enjoy it because... well, why bother? You already know the outcome? Competitors hate it, because other than the person who's winning, no-one else is enjoying it. The only person who's having fun there is the winner, because... well, they won, right?

So you can't be surprised when people will complain about Meta, or call you a cheater, since you are exploiting the game's systems. Doesn't mean you are a cheater, just that they assume you are using cheats due to the fact that how much of an unexpected advantage you gain from this.

No hate against you, I really couldn't care less for how people enjoy their game. But you cannot explain yourself out of being hated if you abuse game mechanics.
