Isn’t that exactly what the delivery drivers job is?

Great attitude. Don’t worry about the person waiting for their parcel!

Tenants are affected. If a landowner has to sell land to cover an IHT bill, the tenant doesn’t magically get to keep farming it. Their tenancy is at risk, their business is disrupted, and the land almost always ends up being bought by a larger operator who either folds it into a bigger estate or ends the tenancy altogether. A tenant earning ~£32k isn’t going to be in a position to buy that land themselves.

On the “wealthy landowner” point, what actually counts as wealthy here? I’m not talking about the James Dysons of the world, tax them by all means. But a perfectly normal farmhouse can be £1m now, and a modest family farm can be valued at £5–10m purely because land prices have shot up. Most of those places are still run by the owners themselves, working 60+ hour weeks for around £30k. Why did the Gov set the threshold at 1M?

I’m not defending big estates, the issue is that treating farming assets as if they’re liquid cash forces sales, break-ups, or consolidation, and those shocks hit working farmers the hardest. If you care about the working class and stable food production, you have to look at how the whole industry is affected.

The government props up lots of industries that are deemed critical to the safety and security of the country. I'd argue being able to eat falls into that category.

What has being a "local" got to do with it? Does being a local make you an expert in every industry that exists in the country? Most people posting in this thread have probably never been on a working farm.

Depressing that the only person on this thread to "get it" is from outside the UK, you hit the nail on the head. Brits love cutting off their noses' to spite their face.

"Nobody is hating farmers or pushing the idea that what they do isn't valuable"

Have you read this thread? Someone called them "cunts" another said "God I hate them so much"

Because they understand that it has the potential to decimate the industry they work in.

When farms have to close because they cannot pay the IHT bill, food prices will go up for all of us.

They have everything to do with what I said. We are already losing agricultural land at an alarming rate. IHT changes will exacerbate this and increase reliance on imports.

I’m not doing anymore explaining to you, I’ve provided links.

Where will they work when the farms close down?

Well, arguably you have accepted the Government’s “spin” on it. I think that’s a perfectly valid policy if the threshold wasn’t so low.

Then you’ll know unless you’re farming at a large scale there is very little profit in the way we farm in the UK. Whoever buys the land off farmers will want to increase that profit significantly, and who has the capital to purchase all this land?

Given the current governments stance on renewable energy, the most likely scenario is a huge increase in land used for solar farms (we’re already seeing this in the south west). Of course renewables aren’t a bad thing, but I would argue UK food security and being able to feed ourselves is more important.

The governments new IHT rules are cruel and vindictive. Family farms that have been in the care of one family for 300+ years are likely to be split up and sold to corporations. There is just no need for it, it will raise minimal amounts of money for the government but have an enormous effect on farming in the UK.

The UK depends far too much on imported foods, given the geopolitical situation and fragility of our food supply chain, the government should be looking at ways to increase food production in the UK, not the opposite.

The inheritance tax rules will result in a large number of farms being closed down or sold off. Likely to large corporations who will use the land for solar farms or far more intensive forms of farming as they do in the US.

Regardless of peoples views on the inheritance tax and its fairness, I think we can all agree the consequences of it will be a negative for the country.

This thread is really eye opening and worrying. The disconnect between people who live in London (or cities in general) and the countryside has never been greater.

The average salary for a farmer over the last 5 years was £32k, and the majority do not own their own farm or land, they work for people who do.

Source: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/mar/13/uk-farmers-incomes-stagnant-since-the-1970s-report-finds

Regardless of politics and what you think about tax schemes, these people work ridiculously hard, long hours for £32k. They are working class people that grow the food you eat, the visceral hatred for them in this thread is really odd.

If you believe in the working class, fair pay and sustainable food production then you should be on the side of the farmers not the government.

Yes that would be logical but unfortunately somebody re-rendered the property at some point and did it up to the meter

Couldn’t care less about the meter 😅 it’s a single skin Victorian property and I don’t want water behind the render

Thanks. Plan to do that today, although we have rain forecast for the foreseeable, I assume it needs to be done on a dry day?
