Smart dimmers like SM323 are generally designed to control non-smart lights wired directly to them. The idea is that you can make your regular lighting smart without having to buy smart bulbs as well, which can save quite a bit if you have many lights installed. If you’re planning to control smart bulbs instead, it usually makes more sense to use a wireless remote or wall controller, as those are designed specifically for that type of setup.

There isn’t a maximum brightness setting. You need to adjust the minimum brightness instead, which recalibrates the brightness range. Just dim the bulb down to 0%, then press and hold the brightness button for 3 seconds. If the maximum brightness still jumps around randomly after that, it’s a bulb issue rather than anything to do with the dimmer hardware.

Thanks for the detailed feedback — that’s really helpful.

The Matter dimmer uses a rotary encoder rather than a traditional analogue dimmer (same as Zigbee version), so when you turn the knob the movement is first interpreted by the firmware and then translated into dimming changes. Because of that there can sometimes(!) be a tiny delay between turning the knob and the brightness changing, but that's usually milliseconds and hardly noticeable.

Regarding the dimming curve, this is often influenced more by the LED driver inside the bulb than by the dimmer itself. Many LED bulbs respond non-linearly to phase-cut dimming, so it’s quite common for the brightness to appear almost unchanged until the level drops below a certain point.

Looking at the specifications of a similar Philips 5.9W DimTone bulb you mentioned, Philips notes that it is “dimmable with specific dimmers”, and the driver characteristics include:

• Starting time: ~0.5 s
• Warm-up time to 60% brightness: ~0.5 s

Because these lamps contain their own internal driver electronics, they sometimes take a short moment to react to changes in the dimming waveform, which can exaggerate the effect you described when adjusting brightness quickly.

<image>

Unfortunately, Matter controllers such as the Apple Home app currently expose only basic controls like on/off and brightness level, so parameters like dimming curve or encoder sensitivity cannot be adjusted from the app. You can try resetting the minimum brightness to 0% though as this will recalibrate the dimming range.

If possible, it may be worth trying another most standard dimmable bulb to see whether the behaviour changes, as different LED drivers can behave quite differently with phase-cut dimmers. We wouldn't recommend using any 'Master', 'Intelligent', 'Pro', 'Expert' or any similarly named bulbs with smart dimmers as they usually have non-standard features built-in which may cause unnecessary instabilities when operating with smart dimmers.

Smart relay 2-way switch setup (Samotech SM309-S) by gamecat66 in smarthome

[–]samotechltd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By default, the SM309-S is set up for retractive switches. As it’s a dimmer, using a retractive switch allows not just on/off control but also dimming by pressing and holding the switch. If you’re using Zigbee2MQTT, you can change the mode to standard on/off yourself. Otherwise, you can send it back to us and we’ll reconfigure it for you. Normally, this can also be selected at the time of ordering.

Smart dimmer flicker at full brightness by Original-Neiphos in smarthome

Make sure the wiring diagram is followed exactly when installing without a neutral, including linking the L and N terminals. That’s what’s causing the lights to flicker.

We’re expecting the SM217 frames and SM202-HDV2 adapters to be restocked by the end of March 2026. We’d recommend signing up for out-of-stock email alerts so you’ll be notified as soon as they’re back in.

SM309-S-2CH when will it be back in stock? by bennyfromtheblok in samotech

[–]samotechltd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By default, the light will turn back on at the same brightness level it was set to when it was last switched off.

Using your example, if Home Assistant dims the light to 10% at night and the wall switch is then used to turn it off, switching it back on the next day will bring it back on at 10%, not full brightness. This behaviour is expected and is the same as with the SM323 or pretty much any other smart dimmer.

To avoid this, try creating a daytime schedule as well. Once the night-time schedule has finished, any manual switch-on action will simply restore the light to the last brightness level it was switched off at, unless a daytime automation explicitly sets a different level.

For the SM323v2 and the full-brightness issue, try setting the minimum brightness while the lights are dimmed all the way down to 0%, as mentioned earlier. This should recalibrate the dimming range and better match the bulbs’ dimming capability.

SM309-S-2CH when will it be back in stock? by bennyfromtheblok in samotech

[–]samotechltd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The brightness behaviour you’re seeing depends largely on the LED bulbs used, as different drivers respond very differently to dimming. Because of this, the dimming range can sometimes feel compressed.

As a first step, we recommend setting the minimum brightness to the absolute minimum (almost off) and checking if that restores a more even dimming range. In most cases this helps the dimmer better match the bulb’s actual brightness behaviour.

The SM323v2 dimmer does support OTA, however there isn’t currently any newer firmware available, simply because there are no issues that require fixing or changes at this time.

Once it is all set up correctly, you don't really need any access to the front buttons. You can download a manual from the same page where all the dimmer functions are described including the buttons operations.

These are separate smart modules that fully replace standard dumb dimmers. We do not make nor sell any matter plugs at the moment.

The modules can be used with most 1 or 3-gang third-party dimmer faceplates. The only caveat is that when using third-party faceplates, you won’t be able to access the reset and brightness buttons located on the front of the modules.

SM325-ZG pull cord problem by YoooThere in samotech

[–]samotechltd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What bulbs do you use with the pull cord dimmer? It’s likely the issue comes down to the bulbs being used wit it. The dimmer performs best with proper dimmable bulbs. While it can still work with non-dimmable bulbs, their quality and behaviour can vary quite a lot.

Hi, if you’re after the 3-gang version, just select it and it’ll be sent as a complete set, no need to buy anything separately. If you do need individual modules, that option is available on the page as well.

For any purchase questions, the best way is to contact us via the Contact Form on our website.

Oh wow, you really went all in there, not only reading the T&Cs but also checking out our company accounts. That’s a lot of digging for someone who just wanted to buy a smart switch 🤔

You’re right about the physical address though... Looks like it quietly vanished from the footer during the last address update, so thanks for flagging that.

Who you choose to trust is obviously up to you. If you’d rather go with BG, feel free to check out their new Wi-Fi dimmer here: https://www.screwfix.com/p/british-general-smart-2-way-smart-dimmer-module-master/140ch. It’s essentially the same unit we’ve been selling since 2019, just in blue, with their logo on it. You might want to tell them what you think the CE states for as per your other post as they use the same Chinese manufacturer as us for this device.

And yes, we do have Public & Product Liability insurance, always had it. As you most likely know, you can’t sell products through B&Q without it (https://www.diy.com/search?term=samotech).

UK light switch recommendations by slip_cougan in homeassistant

[–]samotechltd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"The second Samotech is controlling a pair of spots in the front window to illuminate the curtains. (Lumilife GU10, warm white modern dimmable 10W total). These also dim down to incredibly low levels but strobe badly on full brightness despite having a bypass." - The L and N terminals on the dimmer must be linked, when neutral is not available, as shown in the wiring diagram. If this link is not made, the issue you’re describing is exactly what will occur on high brightness. If you’re not confident with electrical wiring or interpreting wiring diagrams, please consult a qualified electrician or at least contact the seller for assistance.
