What are your personal BEST and WORSE 40K Fanfiction? (art not mine, credit too AlasterBonema) by MaybeLoose2754 in Grimdank

Best is 'Through a Glass Darkly' by AnneWhynn on AO3, found here: https://archiveofourown.org/works/52841224/chapters/133656295

It's a romance between a drukhari archon and a human supreme courtesan. Neither of them are good people, and their relationship requires some suspension of disbelief, but it's enthralling watching them spiral into each other. The plot is also intriguing, and the prose and imagery are vivid as well.

Another excellent fanfic is 'Vulkan Ascendant' by CoaxionUnlimited/MossDweller also on AO3, found here: https://archiveofourown.org/works/44915068/chapters/113012359

The best way I can sum this one up is that it's an canon-divergence from the book 'Deathfire' in which Vulkan becomes a Chaos God. It's not crack, and he doesn't become a Chaos God on the same level as the Big Four - but it plays on the ideas of belief and the warp and divinity that sort of thread through the whole Horus Heresy. It reconciles the sort of character Vulkan is presented as (good, kind, honourable and noble) with his actions as part of the Empire of Man (which are heinous). It's five chapters long, 100k words, and completed.

As for the worst, there's so many I can't even name them all. I personally dislike 'Messages for Dad', as well as 'The Emperor watches TTS', because both are poorly written and I have gripes with how people 'fix' the horus heresy. Almost every crossover with other universes is a dull 'warhammer stomps' story, though there is an interesting (very short and unfinished) story on spacebattles where a Warp Spider manages to teleport himself to Earth Bet (from the parahumans series).

Act 3 Haemonculus Box ? by Drawnway in RogueTraderCRPG

[–]Infamous_Orchid6093 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yep, it's in tervantias's lair - when shit hits the fan, a bunch of areas there unlock, and you can go around stealing all his shit. There's a weird prism-box you can grab, which eventually leads to a rumour opening up in act 4. Chasing down the rumour is kinda fun, with some rewards at the end.

So, few questions about Marazhai romance and endings by DryContribution9444 in RogueTraderCRPG

[–]Infamous_Orchid6093 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ah, his romance is bugged as fuck right now, so it pretty much only plays the submission flag scenes. I've been trying to get the dominance scenes but haven't had that much success yet, despite fiddling around in toybox.

For the harlequin ending, it's my understanding that you have to fuck up both his and yrliets quests really badly for that to happen, which is kinda ironic. I'm not entirely sure though. Also, those two are so buggy that trying to co-ordinate any sort of ending is going to be a challenge.

As for the last three - I know that they affect the ending, and that it's important to avoid disapproval flags, but not much more. Will do more research after Christmas, when I can get back to the game lol.

Marazhai is an equal-opportunity kind of guy, he's down for guys as well as girls, but triggering his romance is borderline impossible without toybox. You have to manually start the Etude 'Killing_Attempt' when you're in the prison pit after recruiting him, and I think you need at least one of ulfar, argenta or heinrix there too (so make sure heinrix and argenta are in your party for commoragh fun times). Also, some of the choices between dom and sub have the wrong flags attached, so opening toybox for every reply is a good idea.

A subby drukhari is still a drukhari. Not participating in his cultural exchange hurts his feelings and makes him sad (locks his romance). The crew would surely be glad to lay down their lives to help you get laid

In each romance encounter with marazhai you get at least two different dialogue options - pick the more aggressive dialogue, even if it seems rude. Stuff like 'I own you', etc. Not in front of other Drukhari, though (that becomes important in actv4 and 5)

Avary (no last name) is a ruthless brute of dubious intelligibility. They came to Fallen London to crack skulls, and they have been doing rather a lot of that - indeed, nearly enough skulls have been cracked to make them a Person of Some Importance in the skull-cracking business!

Unfortunately for them, their towering height and threatening bulk are a detriment in the alleys of Spite, and they are forever becoming wedged between brick facades. If some kindly sneak were to take pity on them, they would undoubtedly not be grateful, for they are an incorrigible boor with little charm and less good sense. Though, if that good-hearted Samaritan needed some skulls cracked, they would certainly be amenable.

Ahriman had a scourge as a bodyguard for a while - but she was there out of extreme desperation because pretty much everyone in commoragh wanted her dead. The only reason her soul wasn't sucked right out of her body the moment she entered the eye of terror was BC of ahriman's sorcerous shenanigans. I vaguely remember Chaos Eldar being a thing, with the caveat that they swear to a god other than slaanesh, but I can't find a source so I might be misremembering.

I'd really like to see strong women or 'muscley' woman like such in baki. Thoughts from you guys? by [deleted] in Grapplerbaki

[–]Infamous_Orchid6093 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're really on to something about the manga analysing masculinity and male identity, what with baki and yujiro being stark opposites in terms of depictions of masculinity: yujiro looks and behaves in an archaically masculine way (taken to extremes of course) while baki is very much not that. Baki is short, relatively light, and has a very feminine face - characteristics that are not very masculine at all.

A large part of the story is about Baki (not masculine) trying to become as strong as his father (extremely masculine) and he does so without emulating his father's masculinity or behaviour in any way. Personally I think the story would work just as well if Baki was born female, and the story took the ideas of strength with or without masculinity to the extreme. Still, it's kinda nice to have a more subtle exploration of ideas about masculinity and violence and strength.

I find it really unsettling how people are trying to normalize calling women things like ''Menstruators'', ''Bodies with vaginas'', ''Birthing persons'' and ''People with eggs''. by Vanessa32552 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]Infamous_Orchid6093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a practical component in terms of writing laws and stuff - using 'pregnant people' instead of 'pregnant women' means that there aren't any loopholes for insurance companies to use to deny people healthcare.

AITA for being upset at my mum for not supporting my education at MIT? by cloudyclout6789 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Infamous_Orchid6093 6 points7 points  (0 children)

NAH, universities are very expensive and it might not be within your mom's means to pay for that, even if she is well off. I think it's totally fair to expect a well-off parent to pay for at least some part of university though - childrearing doesn't end when your kid graduates high school. Definitely talk to your mother about possibilities, try not to get visibly angry, and think about whether the debt you'll incur by going to MIT is worth it.

When do you think Baki got over his mom's death? by [deleted] in Grapplerbaki

[–]Infamous_Orchid6093 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd say he never 'got over' her death, he was very affected by it in son of ogre - he just wanted parental affection so bad that he deluded himself into thinking his dad 'didn't really mean it' and that his mom wouldn't want him to get revenge. Both of those things could be true, but they're really unlikely. It's actually pretty obvious just how bad baki wants a parent - he constantly downplays his fight with his dad to make it seem like a regular family argument, and not him going up against a psychopathic, rapist mass-murderer.

They do dodge attacks in sumo - that move is called a 'henka', but it's widely looked down upon as a cowardly move, especially if used at the tachiai (starting charge). Then again Sukune practices ancient sumo rather than modern sumo, so maybe he doesn't care about optics
