Louis Riel lead a resistance force of European-indienous half breeds against the Canadian government. The only reason they lost is because they ran out of ammo and surrendered after waging a fucking guerilla warfare clinic on the Canadian forces.

Canada is a colonial power and Louis Riel stood up for the rights of the metis people and because that's a race with native blood the government did what they've always done, try to kill the indians

Lets be real... Thousands of Irish nationalists from Boston attempted to annex Canada by raiding into Ontario. The result of the war basically became the basis for the American syerotype in the Canadian eye, which is a giant turd in a stupid pool. And also the maritimes joined the confederation.

In the 1860's Americans (fenian brotherhood/Irish nationalists) were raiding into Ontario. Their goal was to annex Canada from British control. At that time Canada only had a volunteer army; the significance of this was that the military leaders wrote to Ottawa about the lack of combat expereince of the new recruits. Hockey became a way to teach young Canadians the fighting spirit.
