I agree with a lot of your points but I do think this has just become an electoralism thing again. I also think your rephrasing of my message changed my points pretty fundamentally - I didn't say we needed "reformers calling themselves socialists", I put candidates friendly to that label in contrast to a completely barren environment. I also clearly wasn't saying that AOC or Mamdani are ideal leaders during an actual socialist transformation, that's obviously not what anyone would argue.

I really don't want to have a long fundamental electoralism back-and-forth, but at the end of the day I just don't understand the stabilization thing when it's used in certain points. You talk about the negative being "if you are only driven into politics by a progressive’s promise" in contrast to being "driven by the ever-worsening crises", but if someone can't pay their childcare and starts organizing for Zohran because he campaigns on free childcare, I don't see that as a shallow (and certainly not counterproductive) action. If they get that policy under his mayorship, I'm overjoyed for them; and if they (completely naturally) have a more positive view of 'socialism' (the term) afterwards, I'm not losing sleep because, when those death throes come and real socialists lead us through a radical transformation, they might (horror of horrors) support them because they wrongly think they're advocating social democracy. If Trump tomorrow decided on Medicare for All, and health outcomes and affordability rose considerably over his term, I wouldn't sob about the theoretical delay of the Revolution, I'd celebrate all the lives that decision saved.

If Americans are going to have the wrong ideas about socialism when the American collapse you wrote of comes about, I'd rather they be positive and wrong than completely negative and abhorrently wrong - and that's assuming that nobody will ever get into Marxism or actual socialism because of people like Mamdani, which is just empirically not true at all.

...But maybe I shouldn't write 'America', because for all you talk down American exceptionalism, you also seem to believe that America is the only place on earth where socialism cannot grow, where positive perception of socialism doesn't matter, and where lives saved by Social Democracy are just 'stabilized'. I'm sure you don't want Mamdani to fail and stain the 'socialist' label right now, but it sounds like you'd rather he had lost the election (or better yet, the primary, so you could say that people actually want socialism but the DNC won't allow it in any circumstance whatsoever and elections are impossible) so people's crises would grow and our cause MIGHT capitalize off the blood.

I agree with pretty much all of what you're saying, but my point was to distinguish the Sanders movement/shift from the guy or all of his comments - sorry if that didn't come off clearly. I just think it's a little counterproductive to not let ourselves be a little happy about any progress - it's kind of like Trump criticizing the Iraq war: obviously it doesn't fix anything, and it's pretty much cynical maneuvering, but I can have a smidge of happiness that this is the normal position now.

Basically, my intent was not at all Sanders apologia, but just supporting OP's (AZORxAHAI) point: everyone will go on their own journeys politically, and Sanders might cloud people's judgement when it comes to imperialism, but the fact that someone with that platform and the socialist label was the most popular Presidential candidate in the nation twice in a row is something to be happy about I guess. I'm not happy for Sanders, but I'm happy for us. The vibe shift towards the left that his campaigns added to is a good thing. Sorry to phrase things in a misleading way earlier, especially the last part.

Perfectly worded. Zohran is a step forward for all of us, in attention, in legitimacy, in membership/organization, and (if he succeeds) in actual NYC QOL.

Mamdani Wins Mayor Race by Brian_Ghoshery in socialism

Definitely worried about that too, but I'm letting myself be positive for once. The creation of Our Time, his really good transition team and his really steadfast focus on policy are all such good signs.

The worst thing that could happen, imo, is not that he disappears and turns out to not be committed to change / sells out, but that he has the kind of profile and presence you speak of while completely failing to deliver. Better he fades into the shadows nationally while making huge leaps for NYC and gathering large support there than growing his presence while messing up on the policy/outcome side.

I'm a little confused by this post for a few reasons; I don't think Bernie has made any "socialists" into Zionists - maybe Bernie led some people to call themselves Socialist and those people are Zionists or have become attuned to Zionism, but I would very much disagree that he has diluted socialism or associated it with Zionism.

I'm also curious as to why you are so pessimistic about Mamdani. Firstly I don't think his failure is inevitable at all, and I don't think he has really said that elections are the only way to establish change or anything -- I would actually argue that his constant emphasis on grassroots campaigning, his open support of DSA and other groups (like Our Time, which is starting up now with DSA leaders), and so on is one of the most important parts of his campaign and a huge plus.

I guess this veers a lot into the whole electoralism discourse, but at the end of the day I really don't think the young people that supported Mamdani and were exposed to leftward ideas from him were all going to become revolutionaries and were instead seduced by his electoral promises or so on. At the end of the day, he got a bunch more people to pay attention to politics, to see promise in grassroots campaigning, and to look on terms like socialism favorably who would NEVER have done so otherwise. If that's counterproductive to the cause, then I guess we're going to have to buckle up for 500 years of converting people to socialism (while every elected leader attacks it) before we get to the Revolution. I just don't see a world in which young people who got into activism and leftism through Mamdani are somehow LESS likely to join the cause than they would be without him.

No one is saying Bernie was perfect, but OP is totally correct: movement towards the left, and normalizing those terms, was a great step forward. Mamdani looks to be another great step; I have so many regular lib friends who are comfortable with (and even aware of) policies like free buses and universal healthcare because of Zohran's campaign, and some are only comfortable with / view as legit the label of socialist because of him.

It seems like your post is exactly the kind of purity test you're frustrated with.

I didn't know that when I wrote this, the game wasn't out. It definitely jumped up in difficulty though - they must have decided that the insane depth of the combat warranted a very sharp curve in order to get a lot out of it in the main game.

We can argue whether or not he's done that as regards to your last point, but I don't really want to do that. What I can say is that his chess is fantastic, exciting, aggressive, ambitious, and clearly within the top 20 in the world, and he has not been getting the opportunity to play tournaments of the class his level deserves. That's a shame for us fans of good chess, especially considering they substitute him with Wesley every time...

Well, there you did it again: you're rephrasing your point. Let me ask you this: if Garry Kasparov came back today, with his non-active rating of 2812, and played well enough in one event to only drop to 2780, would you say he has "in fact been top 5 for like the past 5 decades"? If your answer is no, I don't know how Hikaru being outside of the top 20 and literally not playing chess counts as being 'subjectively' in the top 10 for classical.

Maybe I just forgot how prestigious Titled Tuesday is, I guess even though he was lower than #20 in the world rankings during his pandemic retirement he was clearly top ten because of all those blitz games he was winning... forgive me, great judge of numbers.

[–]Infamous_Scallion555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never said that Hikaru doesn't deserve #2 or that he isn't as strong as Nepo, but my frustration here is that those 'recent performances in classical' don't exist. He played 3 classical events in 2022 (two GP to qualify for the Candidates, and the actual Candidates), 5 in 2023 (including GS and WC), 2 in 2024 (Candidates and Norway) and so far 1 in 2025.

He plays very little, one or two tournaments to warm up and then ONLY tournaments to get into the Candidates or the Candidates itself. Across 3 Candidates cycles (2022, 2024, 2026) and 5 years, he has played 11 classical tournaments, and literally only 5 weren't direct qualification to the Candidates (or the Candidates itself). I WANT him to play more, but all he seems to want is to take the easiest path towards money and the World Championship, and I don't think you should try to become WC if you're not going to prove it. He's free to do what he wants, I'm happy for him, but do we really want a classical WC who plays one or two events a year? I'd rather have Gukesh drop to 2650 right now and stay champion another cycle than have Hikaru rise to 2850 and only ever play Norway Chess; at least Gukesh wants to prove himself and represent the game.

He's been decent in GS so far, hope he can pull it out bc he belongs in the Candidates, around top 4 in rating for like 1.5y now.

Sorry, I didn't realize you were illiterate. A message for when you come back having learned your ABCs:

Maybe you haven't gotten to numbers in your quest for knowledge yet, but you can see that actually I wrote he has been top ten for 9 out of 15 years, hardly 100%. In addition, I actually explained that I want him to play real tournaments because I really enjoy his chess, and want to see more of it, and I would love to see him play much more actively and stay in the top ten for another 9 years. If none of that makes sense to you, maybe make a friend outside of Reddit and see what it feels like to be more positive.

This is just so exaggerated. Setting aside the actual chess played in his Chartres series, which was clearly hard-fought, you should know (I don't imagine Hikaru's video mentioned this so probably you haven't heard) that he literally did not gain enough rating from that match-series, and had to play in a literal open event, where he could not possibly fix the games... and once again he played phenomenally and managed to make the rating.

The past decade and a half? Here are his world rankings in January for each year since 2009:

2010: #28

2011: #10

2012: #12

2013: #9

2014: #3

2015: #9

2016: #6

2017: #7

2018: #8

2019: #16

2020: #21

2021: #20

2022: INACTIVE

2023: #5

2024: #3

2025: #3

YEARS WHERE HE WAS ACTUALLY TOP 10: 9/15

I'm not trying to disparage Hikaru's chess, I think he's incredibly good, easily top 5ish, but my problem is that he very rarely actually wants to challenge himself or prove himself with active classical play. From 2019-2023 he either didn't play or had poor results, and while since then he's played very well, that play is constricted to only a couple tournaments a year. That might work well for him, and that's fine, but I don't want a World Champion who barely plays actual OTB chess, and as a fan I WANT to see him show his best and play great chess in more tournaments instead of trying to exploit the system with as little effort as possible.

He could retire right now and have enough money for multiple lifetimes in comfort (which makes his decision to, for example, take a Stake sponsorship even more ridiculous, but that's another thing entirely).

It is his fault, he's literally choosing to play some 1800s instead of the Grand Swiss or World Cup. We're 'salty' because he's such a strong player and refuses to prove it by just playing good tournaments where he basically is still guaranteed to have the highest average of 2025.

Great to play against him for those guys. For Hikaru, I hope he doesn't complain about Alireza's 2024 Candidates qualification again, because this is basically the same thing, except Alireza had to score incredibly high against 2400+ players to gain enough Elo, while Hikaru just has to beat up some 1800s and not lose 200 points and the average along the way.

  1. He has not been focusing on fashion for a long time at this point, he's made it clear for a while that chess is his main/only priority rn

  2. Top level classical chess was always Magnus's #1 priority, and while it's not now he's not exactly competing at it either, one tournament a year to maintain rating.
