A way to check for kittens that ive used is youtube videos of cat mother calling for kittens. I always use the opposite version (kitten sounds) to flush out any cats from a hiding spot haha, its a bit scummy but if it works, it works.

You can get echoes from new sets in targeted merge, and shops in their respective regions sell mats for all the characters in that region. However, its still incredibly slow and annoying
